Not sure if you’ve seen the Gary Pert announcement to the players, but Goody left a lot of money on the negotiating table, in order that the current coaching set-up could remain despite the soft cap restrictions. He was entitled to ask for much more dough, but preferred that his team could stay as is. Probably also the reason for the 2 year deal. Thanks Goody!14 points

Listening to Pert talk about what Goody has sacrificed to keep the coaching group together is remarkable. If there is anyone out there still questioning whether he is the right man then you need to have a good hard look at yourself. Go Dees!!!13 points

Are people really upset that Tmac kicked a goal after the siren in the GF? What the actual [censored]?!12 points

I have a source who was involved in the contract negotiations and they told me that Goody would have got an extra two years but for the fact he didn't review the 2018 prelim.11 points

While 2 years may seems short for a Premiership coach, short term contracts will be the standard for both players and coaches, until the CBA is re-negotiated and the AFL comes through with new Soft cap limits. So all good news and thoroughly deserved for all parties.10 points

On a slightly different tack, today’s news represents an epic failure of the campaign by the Herald Sun and its informants a few months ago to disrupt Goody’s coaching career. We should all get together soon at the Sorrento Hotel and drink a toast to the health of Simon Goodwin and the Melbourne Football Club!9 points

You really think Roos had an easy gig? The Football Department was completely shot when he walked in. There is no 13th without Roos. He was worth every cent8 points

Gees, there's no better message to the playing group than the coach taking a haircut and that the money needs to look after everyone to sustain success. What a legend.7 points

Its interesting, many supporters of other clubs are actually enjoying the way Melbourne are playing and going about it, more than hating it. Even my one-eyed Bomber supporting brothers are begrudgingly admiring and tuning in especially to watch our boys play, simply because we are so good to watch when we turn it on. Coach re-appointment, Narrn, Women's footy are all further validation that as a club we are on off-field as well as on-field.7 points

Do we really need another contract thread? Nothing is going to happen until Gil sorts out the TV rights going forward - why would you sign when you don't know what the size of the pie is?7 points

A couple of years ago I thought he was a poor coach, Once we got Yze and Choco, he seems to have relaxed a bit and takes other opinions on board. He seems to have grown, my opinion has grown, How much has he done wrong in the last two years, not much Deserves the 2 years definitely, every flag , another year, no problem at all.7 points

I used to travel to Perth quite often on business but not any more. Much like the Camino de Santiago, I want to travel one last time to the capital of WA and visit Optus Stadium. I want to stand where Trac once stood, where Sparrow did likewise, and hover in that spot where Oliver delivered his Fist of God goal - the aim being to immolate one more time in that life-changing event. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.7 points

And..? You might be all over Tik Tok and across every post here ever, but I'm sure some havent seen it. I hadn't. Also, THAT particular video was posted a day ago and references Norm Smith medalist, so assumed it was new.6 points

Running on the theory that the emergencies will come off the extended bench, you would assume that Jackson, Sparrow, Pickett and ANB will all play. That would mean Weideman misses out, along with Dunstan, Bedford and Laurie.6 points

So an interesting stat on afl 360 regarding our performance ytd . Pressure acts #3 (2021)>> #14 (2022) and defending ball movement #3 (2021) >> #13 (2022). Its quite an alarming stat and has really put too much pressure on our back 6. Thank goodness for May! I’d like to think these are the gears and we can up our pressure when required but I didn’t think we ranked that badly until tonight. What’s more concerning is that this is just against the bottom 10 teams. The Saints game will give us a real indication of where we are. They match up well and have the weaponry to really exploit our current vulnerabilities. Either way our boys desire and willingness to back up last year will be put to its first real test.6 points

Not wishing to give this witches’ hunt any more oxygen, but BT did describe it after Tom’s after the siren goal as “being the greatest winning margin in a grand final by any Melbourne team”. Something the vast majority of true red and blue faithful would be rather proud of, given the club’s history.6 points

Melksham unlucky but gives me confidence we have a bit more depth 21 pressure acts, 5 marks, 3 tackles was a decent effort5 points

As I attended the 1964 GF and have been a supporter since the 50s so I have no choice but to place Norm Smith first. Second is Simon Goodwin. A premiership gets you to the top of the list. Third John Northey who took a young, struggling group to five consecutive years of finals. Old style coach who got the best out his team. Fourth is Neale Daniher. Notwithstanding the mess we were in in 1997, in 1998 he inherited a team that recruited White, drafted Johnstone and recovered from injury Lyon, Tingay, G Lovett, Schwarz to play in the finals in his first year. A brain fade in the preliminary final possibly cost us a chance to beat Adelaide again in the GF. Consecutive years in the finals eluded us until 04, 05 and 06 so that we were not consistent. A wasted era. Fifth is Neil Balme. His tenure was blighted by injuries to key players to the extent that in one game (forgot year) our key forward position selections were Charles and Farmer. There was no-one else. His one good year was 1994 (notably due to Lyon and Schwarz who were missing thereafter) but he did discover Neitz's forward ability and had the courage to play his best player in the forward line and not at CHB where he had starred.5 points

I love how Whately has said that the Freos position is compromised due to 6 players out with COVID and playing the bottom team whilst he was completely mute on our position entering the Hawthorn game. In fact nobody has really acknowledged what we were able to do. All I have heard is we look a bit off. FFS.5 points

Excellent decision by all parties. Well done to all. The players to a man will be rapt. Gives Goody the chance to be a 4 - time Premiership coach. Importantly also must keep the band together. Like Choco, Yze, Jason Taylor, Tim Lamb, Dr. Laura (for gettiing May up for the GF - lifetime contarat for her for that effort IMO), and apologies to those I should have listed. Remember when Clapton left Cream - the band just folded. Downside it gives the media 3 year's worth -of made up stories about what happens next re: Yze - will he, won't he????? Succession etc....5 points

Agree. A sensible and realistic contract extension. Everyone has their use-by date. We just don’t know when that will be for Goodwin. I just hope when that comes, both parties can agree to the parting in a decent and gracious manner and we don’t see a repeat of the debacle we have seen with other coaches our own included. Despite all the rhetoric from the family club, their parting with Clarkson was a nasty tacky ending. Times will never be better than now. We have won that elusive premiership and we are top of the ladder and seemingly sweeping all before us. We may win more flags but the first is always the best like winning that first Gold Medal. You are right in stating that Max, Christian and Clarry are generational players. When it is all said and done, they collectively and individually are the difference between winning and losing. And we should probably throw May into that ring. If you took anyone of those 3 or 4 out of the ring, the Hawks would have knocked us off. We do have many great players and we have great depth. But the good times never last for ever. It’s always a thin line between winning and losing and the generational players and match winners are usually the difference. Just taking one of those players out of the team has a huge impact. Just think Melbourne without big Max. Think of Dusty at Richmond. Its when a Club needs stable and consistent leadership with development and succession planning being an on-going feature of the way it manages the ups and downs. I like that old saying that you are never as good as you think you are or never as bad as you think you are. However with intelligent recruiting, player development and a flexible creative and respected coach (and coaching staff), a Club can enjoy a longer period of success.5 points

I just love the way Steve May holds himself out on the footy feild too. Struts about with his big chest out, half psycho stare and his whole body language says "don't [censored] with us". Must give a huge amount of confidence to those playing around him. They say Lever is the general with the way he commands orders to his team mates and makes sure our defense is well positioned, but I reckon the backline walks taller with May down there.5 points

Harmes has stuffed up plenty of attempts at goal without TMac's input. The whole TMac mark on the line has been overblown here. Fritta did it to Sparrow in Q1 of the GF. That turned out ok !5 points

Steven May is seriously one of the best key defenders I've seen play the game. Dude is an absolute brick wall.5 points

Loved it. The final seal on a dominant and magnificent win. Summed up the Dees attitude that day. Play hard until the siren. I mean seriously, who wouldn’t have had a kick for goal at the siren. Stamped the team’s dominance.5 points
-
You seriously think he should not have taken that kick? What would you have had him do instead - kick into the stands, just drop the ball at his feet, bomb it up the ground? A professional footballer does not refuse to take a shot after the siren in any circumstances. What did it achieve? For one thing it was yet another example of our discipline and playing to the final siren. And an example of tom's professionalism and respect for the game. The same discipline underpinned why goody never fudged the rules to get Jordon on the ground, something he could easily have done (after all Steve may had a tear in his hammy). When asked why he didn't goody (paraphrasing) said no one was injured so he couldn't do it. Discipline.5 points

Interesting to talk about the Demon spirit, taking less money than otherwise could be got and wanting to keep the team and staff together working towards the ultimate goal. Great message for everyone but particularly Jackson and Brayshaw, currently out of contract!4 points

2 outcomes Either I am going to wake up and find out I have been in a coma for a year and this was all a dream, or we will receive a ransom note from whoever stole my football club last year demanding we pay-up or they will give us back what we had for the last 57 years.4 points

I am so happy. He not only talks the walk in terms of the new team culture he actually walks it. He also clearly knows that he is only as good as the team around him on and off the field. You can almost guess that he actually took a pay cut of sorts to ensure that there is funding available to try and keep on other key support staff in future years. I would like to think that some of this ‘culture’ rubs off onto the players when it comes up to contract negotiations. Time will tell. Just finally, I find it so refreshing how he speaks so respectfully about all of the playing group. I keep saying, we as the supporters of the team can be so proud but in so many ways we also have opportunity to improve on our attitudes and mindsets at times, me included . GO DEES4 points

Good news. Nothing wrong with short contracts. can always sign another one down the track, if all parties are happy4 points

Watching the GF for the first time in months. I’ve dead set got a tear in my eye. Honestly still can’t believe we did it. maybe I won’t believe it until I see it at the G4 points

By taking that kick, he avoided any post-match discussion about the implications for any betting on the game which was related to the winning margin. That would have distracted from the overall positive publicity. Whether we like, don't like or don't care about the betting is irrelevant. The AFL has obligations under agreements with the betting companies and the gambling regulator to ensure that it manages the integrity of the game. Playing the game to the end is one of those obligations. Finally, and on a separate point (so to speak), that after-the-siren goal gave us the greatest winning margin - by one point - in any of our 13 premiership wins.4 points
