  1. Given two absolutely unforgettable moments in the goalsquare that I will cherish forever. One being his lead-snatching goal while being slung in a tackle that sealed our magnificent win against West Coast in Perth back in 2017. The other being his vital brutish shove of the Dogs defender through the goals to secure Sparrow's goal in the dying moments of the GF 3rd quarter, without which we'd have gone into the last with far less momentum and scoreboard buffer. Absolutely fantastic work by TMac to have wrung 200 games out of his career to date - particularly given his early development occurring in the midst of our ****test years, and his latter-years reinvention as a forward.

  3. I disagree with people potting Tom McDonald for taking that mark. If you watch the replay he never took his eyes off the ball, so wouldn't have known exactly where he was. If he let it go and it wasn't long enough there is every chance it bounces short of the line and goes left or right and hits the post. He then went and apologised to Harmesy and explained it straight after.

  4. It's a small thing, but I like that the two players in the photo wearing the jumper are May and Viney - a player with indigenous heritage and one without. Whether it's deliberate or not, it shows that indigeneity is integrated into the club. If it had been May and Pickett (or any other indigenous player), that integration would be less obvious.

  5. T Mac is being judged too harshly on the Harmes mark on the goaline imo. He has never had the best awareness and I reckon he wasn’t sure where the posts were and thought he better mark it to be sure. I really don’t think he would have intentionally marked it knowing the full situation around him, where defender were etc

  6. He’s certainly had an up and down career but 200 games (so far) and a premiership medal are not to be sneezed at. But I do wish he’d smile a little more😄!

  12. Two points. Firstly, we shouldn't assume payers with Covid will be automatically fit to play the next week. I thought Lever looked way off the pace on Saturday, although Viney seemed as good as new. It may be risky, therefore, to bring back five Covid affected players all at once. Secondly, a couple of people have suggested dropping Hunt. I think that might be based on looking at disposal numbers rather than the job he's doing. It seems to me he has become Jetta's replacement as the lock-down defender playing on the opposition's most dangerous small forward. I'm pretty sure he played n Shai Bolton and kept him out of the game and was it Luke Breust on Saturday? (I couldn't get to the game and it's hard to identify match-ups from the TV coverage.) It makes sense if that's become Hunt's role as it leaves the distribution roles to those better at it, such as Bowey, Brayshaw, Rivers and, when he returns, Salem.

  13. Here is another stat for you all. In 2022 Melbourne FC is tracking towards its HIGHEST EVER AVERAGE HOME GAME CROWD. So how about we start talking about how great it is to see our premiership success translate into bums on seats despite the pandemic? https://afltables.com/afl/crowds/melbourne.html Edit: perhaps "highest of the modern era" is a better statement. We are still going to be the below the attendance numbers of '61-'64.

  19. Saintsational Haven't opened a 'preview' thread yet...not sure if they have one... Will add later if it appears. Big Footy Early on it was outrage at playing in Cairns, selling a home game and doom and gloom over their one pt loss. Then they realised the sky wasn't falling and not only were they still in the 8 but top 4! Unlike our opps in recent weeks they are quite chirpy about our game. Not so much Doom and Gloom. Our boys will be absolutely rooted after this game. At least we’ve got an easy kill next week. Well done club. Don't go there. You know he'll (Dunstan) be stepping up to rub Ratts face in it. Hopefully the club catches Covid and can't field a side. You obviously haven't watched much of Melbourne before. We need to re think how we play because if we have 2 players that can score big bags and not much else we will get taken apart. Expect the third quarter to be definitive. Both Melbourne and St Kilda have been third quarter teams this year. Which makes me think a fast start in the first two quarters could go a long way this game. Now we enter the storm. I'm not optimistic...and am fine with that. Overall I think we'll give it a red hot crack. If we pull a win out the port game is forgiven. I hope the boys have a sour taste in their mouths from cairns. Use that fire in their belly as the fuel to get a win this Sunday. I'd love to be the team that knocks Melbourne off. We are talking levels of delusion much further than previously explored as a supporter of this team. Optimism: In hindsight I thought we were really good just unlucky. Should account for Melbourne then Geelong pretty comfortably considering our form and mental toughness. I think we can give them a real shake and possibly even get a win if we play as well we did the last time we played at the MCG against the Hawks. What a way to win redemption if we can knock off the Dees at the MCG, I watched them today and they are ripe for the picking, let's knock them off. Actually think we’ll win this. Have felt like it for a few weeks. Do I think we’re better than Melbourne? No. But I think they’re ripe for the picking, and we get them at the right time You know what they say about things that bleed… I think Melbourne are far from invulnerable. Yes, they’re bloody resilient and at their best they will beat anyone. But, it’s our job to know what their best is and deconstruct it. It’s our job to match their resilience. I think we may flourish being the hunter. I'm hoping that the loss last night really hurts them and has also blow away a few egos. That's the only reason I'm tipping a win. I just don't fear Melbourne like other great teams of the past. That's not to take anything away from the dees. They're a great team and deserve all the praise. But compared to the Geelongs, Hawks and Tigers, those teams were just absolutely amazing on their day. I remember facing them and wondering how the hell do we beat them. But with this Melbourne team, idk what it is, it just doesn't scare me as much. My favourites: I can't see us winning. But I can see us winning. But I can't, but I can? 70pt win to us to paper over cracks further, Dees only loss for the season and they utterly pump us in finals as is right. 50/50 but it's us, so no actual chance except May to maybe break records for intercepts.

  21. Last week kozzie completely burnt fritter AND by doing so almost certainly cost us an easy walk in goal. Not a hanging offence, but zero doubt that was a selfish act. Didn't cop much grief or accusations of being selfishon here as far as I can recall. Tmac marks on the line (didn't cost us a goal) and made a decision to shoot for goal instead of an almost equally difficult pass to teamate (who knows if that cost us a goal) and gets accused of selfishness. Pretty harsh if you ask me.- particularly for a fella with plenty of credit in the selflessness bank.

  22. Tmac has had a lot of stick for the mark, and I think he was unsure what to do. I read he was worried it may hit the line and bounce back to my mind it looked like he was also worried he may not be able to get out the way with someone behind him. A shame for Harmes who deserved it but the commentary has been over the top.

  25. Very under-appreciated for his pack busting, gut-running and swing man capabilities. So much of his work goes unnoticed by many on here. But he takes a gorilla backman each week and plays a vital role for us. Outstanding story of perseverance and not throwing the toys out of the pram when he was told to look elsewhere. Instead knuckling down and working on deficiencies in his game. Thoroughly deserves his 200 games and his premiership. Congratulations Tom.

  26. Nice argument. I'm in the camp that we need all three of TMac, Weid and BBB to be at the top of their game come finals, so giving them all a solid run of games only improves us as a team should any of the three have an injury/COVID. The arguments around TMac vs Weid and dropping one of them permanently don't really help us manage future contingencies/risk mitigation in my view. Best wishes to TMac on his 200th if selected, he was a shining light in defence for many of our dark years and his kicking for goal is eons ahead of his kicking out of defence. I hope he's picked and plays a blinder.

  28. YIPS by KC from Casey The Casey Demons overcame a bout of goal kicking yips and a last quarter Box Hill Hawks comeback to record score a goal a thrilling 7 point away from home victory on Sunday. With senior affiliate Melbourne fighting a Covid breakout and some injury concerns to their listed players, Casey turned to youth and called up locals Zac Andrewartha, Matthew Johnson and Harvey Neocleous to join Matt Buntine, a local product who was part of the inaugural GWS Giants list. The team made a slow start but took control late in the opening term and led at every change. There was little to get excited about in what was for the most part a dull game under cloudy skies at Box Hill City Oval and but for their inaccuracy in front of goal, the game should have been safely in the Demons’ hands by the final break. However, two goals to the home side reduced what had been a game high 26 point Casey lead midway through the final term to a manageable 17 points with the freshening breeze aiding the Hawks. The Hawks grabbed their chances early in the final quarter and within ten minutes took the lead after three more unanswered goals. Casey coach Mark Corrigan made some telling changes to the on ball division and the team lifted on the running strength of Oskar Baker and the goal kicking composure of the previous night’s medical sub Kade Chandler who responded with three goals, the last of which, at the 23 minute mark, made victory safe despite a goal on the siren which brought the home team back to a losing margin of seven points. The Demons went into the game with 11 AFL listed players after the withdrawal of Jake Melksham due to a late Covid19 case at Melbourne and with Michael Hibberd also out, they were severely down on experience. Box Hill were in a similar situation - they fielded only 9 Hawthorn players. It was left to a combination of young and old to preserve Casey’s undefeated record. Majak Daw was magnificent in the ruck and was aided by young ruckman Jake Bell who lifted in the final term. Skipper Mitch White was ever-reliable kicking the team’s opening goal with help from a brilliant Chandler pass and another to kick off the second half. James Munro burrowed into packs and tackled hard in the midfield and George Grey kicked a couple of handy goals. Adam Tomlinson was handy with some strong marking in defence. Some Demon youngsters are worthy of mention. Bailey Laurie played his best game and was dangerous up forward throughout. Likewise, live wire small forward Andy Moniz-Wakefield was impressive with his run and his endeavour, particularly when the chips were down late in the game. And high marking Jacob Van Rooyen showed some glimpses of special talent which should, when fully developed, translate into a very good AFL key forward in due course. He kicked an outstanding goal in the third quarter. Fraser Rosman had his moments and seems to have settled well into a key defensive position. In the end, the final score of 10.19.79 to 11.6.72 said it all about Casey’s big bout of the yips. The top of the ladder Demons face a big challenge next up when they host Southport for the first time at Casey Fields. 30. The main reason I would prefer you not bother comparing this to Garry Hocking changing his name is because it trivialises something that means more in the positive to some than it does to you in the negative. You can call it precious, or call it manners, or whatever, but I just don’t see the need to make it known that you don’t like something that is meaningful to a group of Dees fans that haven’t been embraced in the past.

Great effort to get to where he has in the game, as a 200 game player who is pretty well respected I think. Meanwhile, my nephew (who was apparently a far better junior) is still running around a local country league.

  42. Have seen the Saints pretty closely this year and what i will say if you look at Higgins for example, he scores so many out the back goals that we just won't allow, Membrey and King are threats in the air, but we have good match ups for them. and our midfield should have the quality to create enough chances to win. bottom line is i think the Saints offensively have been able to score goals in ways better teams won't allow and with that method restricted, i don't know if they have the quality as a straight up footy side to beat us over 4 quarters, while acknowledging they're much improved and could easily win enough games to play finals and even win a final, just don't think they're in the bracket of the Melbournes, Sydney, fremantle, Brisbane teams yet

It is never a fun feeling on the long train ride home. As strange as it is...we need to get used to winning now! After 57 years of pain (as Max Gawn said) we deserve a bit of joy and happiness. Long may this new successful era of the Melbourne Football Club continue!
