  1. A resounding yes. I still have a bit to do with Cam occasionally. His favourite time in footy was his early days at the Demons in the early - mid 80's when he was instrumental in the recruitment of some outstanding players in the Barassi/Northey era. His heart beats true and he couldn't have been more pleased for the club.

  2. LIke all of us, Gary Lyon is a fallible human being. For sure, he has done well out of his career as a footballer, but his love of the club is not in doubt. I dont understand the semi-dislike for him, I really don't. Those who are immaculate in their judgements over a lifetime, let them cast the first stone! Let us not forget that there are currently four living Melbourne premiership captains. Insofar as Noel McMahen and John Beckwith are in good health, I hope they all play a role on December 5 with RDB and Maxy.

  4. Lynden Dunn has been a life member of the Melbourne Football Club since 2015. Hard not to open the door to him, and I don't see why not.

  5. I apologise for bringing up such a negative topic. I guess I am still very angry at Brock McLean. He used to be one of my favourite players at the Demons. The whole situation was disastrous for our Club. It was such a horrible time for the Club and all of us as passionate Melbourne Demons members and supporters. In the end, there will always be those who have unpleasant "break ups" thoughout life. Whether it be personal relationships or work or whatever. The positive is that it is all in the past now. Some can forgive and forget and some cannot. Obviously depending upon the circumstances. I definitely feel a massive burden has been lifted from us now that we have broken our Premiership drought after 57 very long years. We can now look ahead to a positive future for our beloved Melbourne Demons.

  9. Scene: a large conference room, deep underground beneath an international bank in Zurich. Neil Balme sits at the head of a long table, stroking a white cat in his lap. Around the table are Tom Scully, Brock McLean, Mark Jackson, Gerard Healey, Brian Taylor, several umpires, and various ex-players and officials. Balme: Gentlemen, you understand why we are here. The results of this year's AFL Grand final were ... unsatisfactory. No-one speaks. They fidget nervously. Balme: I call now for your individual reports. Number two? Scully: gee, number one. We tried. We made sure Goodwin stayed in charge. We brought in Williams who everyone knows is borderline insane. We brought in the stand rule. We even brought back the virus. Balme: enough, number two. All these factors I predicted in advance and they were already compensated for. Number six? Jackson: I'm an individual, ya can't fool ... aw, [censored], I forget how it goes now. (He punches Gerard Healey in the face.) Balme: (into his suit lapel) bring the medication. (aloud) Number eight? Mclean: I, er, did as instructed, number one. Balme: you were instructed, number eight, to spend the night before performing "wheelies" and "burnouts" in your utility vehicle outside the Melbourne team sleeping quarters. Mclean: *gulps* that's right, number one. Balme: in fact you spent that night performing said deeds outside the Wyndham Vale public hotel. Mclean: well I couldn't find out where they was staying. I arksed everyone. I even-- Balme: enough, number eight. Number thirteen? Taylor: wowee, number one. I tried to break their morale. Every game. Balme: "trying" is not considered adequate, number thirteen. You are in a position to influence public perception and hence, team perception. Only success is acceptable. Perhaps you should try learning the players' numbers? Taylor: crikey! Looks like it’s all over for me, folks. The fat lady is getting ready … wowee!! Balme: number twenty? How do you account for a performance so out of character? Umpire Stevic: *gulps* we tried, number one. We let our boys throw it plenty of times -- the Western Bulldogs, that is -- we didn't pay high tackles, but ... gee, number one, we can only help the Doggies if they get near the ball. After halfway through the third quarter ... Balme: I have reviewed the video replays of the match and fortunately for you, I concur with your assessment. You are not held responsible. The umpires sigh and visibly relax. Balme presses a button under the table. Brock McLean screams as a massive electric shock incinerates him and his chair. The chair descends below floor level and a new chair arises in its place. Balme: I do not tolerate failure. Let this serve to ... motivate you. I expect ... improvement ... next season. This meeting is closed.

  10. I have never seen such a reversal and then complete thrashing, of a team 19 points up half way through a 3rd quarter and let alone in a GF. The domination from that point by us was unbelievable. 16 goals to 1 in the last 28 minutes of actual playing time. I watch it over and over again and am still stunned. TBH, I could imagine it being done to us, with my MFCSS, but to win a flag that way, WOW just WOW! Thank you boys, you done us proud.

  11. Interesting comment given you’ve been registered for less than a month and it’s been years since RR was a moderator. He had a pretty prickly personality no doubt, but he also dealt with a LOT of shit. For every time he might have acted harshly, there were 10 funkwits who repeatedly broke the rules and then cried foul when they got given the boot; the ragequitter in question was most definitely one of these. Unless you were staff at the time, you don’t know. My skin turned to teflon years ago when it comes to criticism of our moderation. People see 1/100th of the picture and think they know. They don’t. By the way, RR is still about, he just doesn’t post. I respect his contribution to the site, and I think it’s a pity others don’t.

  12. The club was very badly run for a long time. There must be plenty of people with legitimate grievances out there. Junior is an obvious example. But the grudge is against the people who treated you badly not the club itself. 99% of people can tell the difference and I think that’s why there was an almost universal outpouring of joy from past players when we won. We all love the club but not necessarily the people who have been involved with the club

  13. Nailed it 58er Today's Age had an interesting article on what each team needs to do to improve in 2022. The Dees need to remain selfless, and thats about it. They noted the 3rd quarter was the greatest third quarter in the history of the Grand Final. Many non-dees have said the same to me and a Pies tragic said it was one of the most enjoyable games he'd seen. Very, very few will have sour grapes.

  14. I have always said than an adult who changes his/her sporting allegiance without a bloody good reason indicates bad character. And we know there are quite a few people around with bad character. Implies untrustworthiness, opportunism, disloyalty, shallowness and unfaithfulness.

  17. There was a guy on here who apparently quit the MFC and signed as a Richmond member, all because he copped a Demonland ban. Was one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen in my time here:

  18. Yep, Simon Goodwin and his 23 instantly became immortals the moment the final siren sounded. The greatest MFC team of the last 57 years. If it was me @Mr Steve (and if I had the money), I’d go for the team signed guernsey over individual memorabilia every day of the week. It took a team to become premiers.

  20. Adem Yze was definitely annoyed when he was 'retired', firmly believing he had more left to give. I believe he was pretty chipper on the night, though! Generally I've got the impression that the club has made quite a bit of effort to reconnect in recent times with a message that this has been a long journey and those who kept us going at the hardest moments are a part of this victory. Not to be underestimated how much Nathan Jones' situation has compelled people to recognise that not everyone who got us to this point got to stand on the podium.

  22. Mrs wanted to watch some crap on the ABC so I sat that out and watched the replay. Had some quality problems with the videos so watched the 2nd quarter. With hindsight it was a very good quarter of footy. What I have realised is that the Dogs midfield kicked most of their goals. 7/10. Room for defensive improvement next year?

  27. Yep, same. I went through the roof. Watching it in the replay, this goal is still the moment where the hair on the back of my neck stands up. Love the look on his face as he salutes the crowd too. None of the usual excited child bouncing around you see from him sometimes. A stern look of concentration. We’re crushing them, but the job’s not done yet. We may never again in our lives see a midfield combination like Petracca, Oliver and Viney. I’m definitely going to enjoy it while it lasts.

  28. Clayton Clarry Oliver, what an absolute star, we have loved you since you burst onto the field and that footage of you after kicking that 7th goal in the 3rd with your finger pointing skyward being chased by Dogga and Sparrow looked almost angelic but what a real demon you are. Clayton and his teammates soared to greater heights than even we expected.💕❤️💙

  33. After some hesitation, I bit the bullet and ordered one of these the other day. I was really wanting one with all the players celebrating, but the best version of that one was sold out and I couldn't bring myself to purchase the version with Perth Stadium in the background, because (And absolutely nothing against our Perth based supporters etc) part of me still resents the game being played there and so many of us not being able to make it. Perhaps if/when we win one at the mighty G, I'll get one with it all over the background. In the meantime, the thought of the above one arriving sends me to a happy place every time I think about it as it captures some truly beautiful moments of that one day in September that we've now finally been a part of in my lifetime! GO THE MIGHTY DEMONS!!

  35. While no where near in the same stratosphere as the two aforementioned, I've often felt that Gary Lyon and Jimmy Stynes have been served up the rath of scorned Demons faithful for the lack of imeediate sucess back when they put their hand up to contribute to the club's administration. So happy for the amazing way both were embraced and included in our premiership glory. Barring guys like Jimmy and Robbie not being able to be here, I hardly think it could have played out better, if only perhaps Maxy Gawn could have been involved in that little calibration with the Stynes family, but I'm sure he would have if it weren't for bloody COVID. I really loved that post match interview with Alan Jackovic with Garry in the rooms. It was clear from that and numerous others I've seen or heard him do over the years (the Demonland podcast is a ripper) that Jacko both still bleeds Red & Blue and has a great empathy and kinship with us supporters.

  36. It’s also a collection of individuals. Neeld gets too much ire on here, same with Schwab, and others in the past that did what they felt was best for the club. I do wonder if they found some solace in the premiership, and if they are Demons, we should have the strength and confidence to welcome them back.

  37. Under the circumstances while RDB or Neal would have been chosen ( I am certain Gary would have agreed with that also ) had we played at the MCG your remarks are not necessarily needed as total success was not the ultimate result of either of Ron's or Neals coaching stints ( despite their undoubted efforts and strengths and Club loyalty ). Garys involvement in Neelds coaching disaster was not great but the Club had plenty of other problems at that time that led to our 2012/13 wreckage. I vividly remember speaking with a rusted on Pies fan of my age ( early sixties) at the time and he endorsed Neeld as the major midfield strategist in their 2009/2012 success and 2010 flag. Neeld could always claim he walked into a train wreck which I think was started when we couldn't persuade or relate to Kevin Sheedy after ND 's departure. That I believe put us back a majority of a decade until Roosy played the saviour we now acknowledge someone with experience was needed.

  38. What do you mean by pitches? B: RICH, ANDREWS, HENRY HB: SALEM, MOORE, DALE C: LANGDON, NEALE, MCCLUGGAGE HF: NEAL-BULLEN, DARLING, FANTASIA F: SPARGO, RIEWOLDT, MCDONALD-TIPUNGWUTI FOLL: GAWN, BOAK, WINES IC: VINEY, DRAPER, PARKER, CUNNINGTON SUB: YEO I have better backline, midfield, forward line, interchange and sub so in that reality I have the best team and that's why people should be voting for me plus my team is in capital letters so it stands out more than the others. Who voted for adonski without my team up there I demand a recount.

  39. The SFC FF: Kysaiah Pickett / Aaaron Naughton / Charlie Cameron HF: Dustin Martin / Buddy Franklin / Toby Greene C: Josh Kelly / Christian Petracca / Karl Amon RR: Zach Merrett / Brodie Grundy / Tom Liberatore HB: Aaron Hall / Jacob Weitering / Bailey Smith FB: Jeremy McGovern / Sam Taylor / Jack Crisp INT: Patrick Dangerfield / Nat Fyfe / Jake Stringer / Jordan de Goey SUB: Nathan Jones Pitch: I’ve gone for as many outright match-winners as possible, those rare individuals who can win games off their own boot on any given day, and the team is truly stacked with extraordinary firepower – indeed, it just about features all of the AFL’s absolute elite in this very special category, including one-name superstars such as; Dusty Buddy Danger & Trac, together with Toby Greene Charlie Cameron Jake Stringer – the ‘Package’ & Jordan de Goey It’s crazy to even imagine that three of those absolute champions of the game start on the interchange bench, all of who can burst through and impact in the middle, alongside ahem, dual Brownlow medallist and fellow pine-warmer Nat Fyfe. And it’s almost as if the league’s best contested mark in Arron Naughton, and some kid called Kozzie already turning games, are mere afterthoughts in what is clearly the best forward-line ever assembled. List management; take a little from Paul to give to Peter, right? Not where it concerns my midfield. I’m backing ruck maestro Brodie Grundy to return to his very league-leading best without the distractions of salary caps and systemic racism, but then tapping to the advantage of whom? Inside beast and Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca, and elite gatherers and distributors Zach Merrett and Tom Liberatore (sure, pick a tag), with Josh Kelly and Karl Amon ready to run away with it on the outside. Should anyone be under-performing in those latter positions, there’s always Stringer and Bailey Smith to take up a spot on the wing, with Bailey having been bumped to half-back due to a slight accounting error, which sees me a tad light on for defenders. Firstly, who even really needs them, if you have the midfield and forward power I do? But this supposed ‘light on’ also includes the other starting five of Weitering, McGovern and Sam Taylor, together with Jack Crisp and Aaron Hall on the flanks. Not sure how anyone could remotely go past the SFC on this one. I’ve assembled what is a State-of-Origin-calibre team, if not even better, with such a high number of generational players. Yes, some of them might be getting a bit long in the tooth, but I’m sure they’ll be fine with such quality around them, and I’m also drafting for the here and now – intending to take out the only flag that will ever be on offer to this team; the 2021 random drafting thread on Demonland. Finally, if none of that won you over, Nat Jones is my sub, and if you vote for the SFC he’ll get to take home a more than well-deserved 2021 random drafting thread on Demonland premiership medal for all of his hard work over the years.

  46. People kept talking Clayton up about being a star before this season but I didn't really agree because yeah he got heaps of the footy but not all the time did he use it properly. His kicking was terrible, he'd handpass instead of kicking, he would waste the footy and do those stupid handballs. But 2021 what a difference. He chose to kick instead and his kicking was accurate and he kicked more goals. He used the ball so much better and just looked a much better player.
