  4. Delighted with the result last night. They're not wrong when they say the cliff can arrive quickly. I'll go against the grain and say i prefer an Essendon win tonight. Push the geriatric cats a little closer to their cliff. Although a dodgy umpire decision late in the game to win it for Geelong would be worth it just to see the Essendon fans heads explode.

  5. I think we'll find the entire reason the 60 goal a year forward isn't in the team yet, is because he's not matchfit. Barely played last year and had an injury interrupted pre season this year. We gave him a few games to get a feel for the team earlier in the year and it was clear he needed to be fitter. I reckon he's going to slot in beautifully over the next couple of weeks and we have this luxury to get him right, because of the ability of our current forward set up to still get get job done. But as Goodwin continues to say, we want to continue to look for ways to improve and no douht BB will do this if fit.

Make the most of it while it lasts. Even if its going to be wet, there will be that many vacant seats, you can just move under cover.

  15. Indeed. We had 14 marks inside 50. Our season average is 12.7. Tick We had 56 inside 50s against a season average of 55.4. So then you can't discount our marks inside 50 number by arguing we had more inside 50s than we normally do. As you say our efficiency inside 50 was poor - 44.6% against a season average of 50.3%. And a high percentage of our missed shots at goals (eg Tmac, Spargo, Harmes etc) were from shots with little angle, as opposed to being from the boundary, as is often the case. And many of our missed passes were similarly in the middle lane. If we had converted our chances and not missed so many easy passes inside 50 we would have won by 5 goals plus. The other stat he might want o check out is how many intercept marks the bombers' took inside our 50. Given he reckons the Giants intercepting defenders, Haynes & Davis, will knock up taking uncontested marks because we are looking for the marking option that don't exist then perhaps, the same should be true of Ridley and Stewart . I can't find those stats, so perhaps I'm wrong, but my guess is they had bugger all intercept marks - certainly less then they average

  16. THIS It really grinds my gears that the 'big' Victorian clubs have been protected from playing down there for years while we have to front up every year. The argument about crowd size is void because barely anyone non-Geelong can get in down there. Geelong gets an armchair ride and the big clubs get protected from playing at a ground where the home team have an obvious advantage. Imagine scheduling Richmond to play down there. If Hardwick the germ can't handle Docklands his head would explode at the thought of the hour drive.

  17. Not sure we’ll see Weid again this year, unless Tmac or Dogga go down (or one of the big 3 in the backline go down and Tmac gets moved back). Based on Casey last week, that’s the ‘replacement’ role I reckon he’ll now play, which is much more to his strengths, not a permanent KPF, but a mobile tall/2nd ruck with forward skills.

  18. I reckon there is a long term plan around BB. I’m guessing there is a lot of thought going into when he comes back into the team to ensure he has a confidence building run. We don’t want that [censored] Mumford running through him for example. Had we not had such a successful year so far, BB would have been rushed back in but we have had the luxury of not having to do that. When BB returns I think it will be permanent and will add that touch of forward class come finals time whilst freeing up Fritsch and make our forward line a whole lot more potent.

  19. Let's face it. We Melbourne supporters are a demanding lot. Here we are with our team on top of the ladder with a record of 12 wins and 2 losses, a decent percentage and a fair run home for a team with finals credentials. We have a fit list with lots of in form players, many of who are in contention for All Australian and other high honours, the team’s playing with purpose and cohesion and its VFL affiliate is undefeated and going gangbusters. Still, we're all walking around with concerned looks on our faces, carrying feelings of concern and apprehension about what lies ahead. What’s the fuss all about - is there a problem or is a case of “much ado about nothing”? Well, possibly there is a problem … we have a powerful defence and a good few A graders in the midfield but there seems to be an issue with the forward line. It's not that they're failing to kick winning scores because they usually manage to do exactly that. What appears to upset us however, is that they're not kicking big scores and, as a result, they’re not destroying opponents. While everyone should strive to get better, it’s hard to do that when you already have a 12/2 win, loss record but the last couple of weeks have seen some poor conversion for goal combined with a decline in pressure applied by the club’s forwards. A number of them are just not scoring goals. In recent games, I’ve noticed that this is particularly so at the pointy end of games. Since the win against the Swans, the Dees have conceded at least the last goal of every match to their opponents, often it’s been the last two or three at the precise time when a top side should be asserting its dominance in attack rather than falling away leaving supporters feeling that they’d just witnessed a “nothing game”. Perhaps it’s not surprising therefore that the club’s website sought out forward coach Greg Stafford to discuss his charges in this week’s episode of “The Talking Point”. Stafford apparently prefers to describe “small forwards” as “speed forwards” while “tall forwards” are “power forwards”. On that basis, I’m not sure where that leaves the likes of Jake Melksham who is currently on the outer or Bayley Fritsch who is on the inner or why Ben Brown can’t get a look in after his five-goal haul at Casey. In any event, team selection in the coming few weeks will be interesting if the intention is to ramp up scoring power. In the case of Saturday’s game v GWS Giants, it might well have been the weather report pointing to coolish conditions and a high percentage chance of rain on game day. Then there’s the opposition. Melbourne rolled an injury riddled GWS combination after a slow start in their last encounter and the Giants’ form in recent weeks has been flaky to say the least against lowly ranked opposition. They drew with North, lost to Hawthorn and beat an insipid Carlton by six goals of the back of some straight kicking for goal. The loss to the Hawks when a top eight spot was in the offing would have been heartbreaking for the few fans who follow them. Chances are that in the uncertainty of the present in a semi hub situation with Covid19 bearing down on them and playing at the unfamiliar MCG in front of thousands of fussy Demon fans who will be demanding a gold standard performance rather than a “nothing” game, things are not going to get better for them. 20. How often does the team train at Casey? There seems to be a few players moving to Mornington Peninsula and shooting across to Casey (the backway) for training. This would be a good alternative for players and similar to the whole lifestyle TPP rort that Geelong seem to pull off. Mornington Peninsula, phillip island, great surfing, good farm land towns etc are all close by. But you wouldn't want too be heading to AAMi more than once a week I suppose.

  30. Essendon were the 2nd highest scoring team so the game plan was to nullify that strength. One thing that seems to becoming more apparent is that the coaching panel are analysing teams strengths and playing to stop their strengths. Our fwd 'connection' is almost secondary. Gus in his podcast pointed to the fact we held Ess to 57pts and what an achievement that was. Similarly we dismantled the Bulldogs game plan, Richmonds game plan and Geelongs game plan. GWS have good skills, don't turn the ball over very often but can be lazy on team defence. They have a solid midfield Group including Taranto, Kelly, Hopper, Whitfield etc. Whitfield gains lots of metres for them and if we can stop him and Greene we go a long way to beating them. Goodwin clearly think our speedy forward line is the right way to go....

  31. True. But i hope they do bring the heat as I want to watch a good game now that i finally get the chance to watch a game of footy live again. One thing i love about where we are at ATM is that the game plan is built for the g and the a clear focus of 'making the g small' as max said after last weeks game. It seems a bit counterintuitive, but i reckon our game works well with the extra space at the g becuase if teams try to switch to get around our zone the width means it takes two shoter kicks or one long one to go to the fat side. Both options give us time to get across and cover that opposite wing. And each extra kick required to switch or pick their way though us is an opportunity to force a turnover.

  33. Dogs have a more 'fun' brand to watch and they can smash teams. We are only exciting to watch if you're a Melbourne supporter. Lets be honest, defensive game plans are drab, but they win flags. To be honest I just really want this game to happen in Victoria. I don't care if it's Sunday twilight. But bloody SA are just not letting that Covid spread. Rude.

  34. They are still experimenting with the smaller line up. I would make it work with Brown from now but I get it. Nathan is unlucky. We should take care of this mob. Our home deck too. Time to be ruthless.

  35. Are you serious? 2019 was one of our worst years in terms of injuries. Neither Lever nor May, who are easily our two best defenders, played more than 10 games due to constant injuries. Tmac did his knee after kicking 6 goals against Carlton and was unable to play for the rest of the season. Melksham, who had been in career best form, got injured very early in the season and wasn't seen again until around round 21. Our forwards were so hampered by injuries to the point where we were forced to play Hunt and Petty in the forwardline. Our performance in 2019 was obviously a shamble, but to say that we have "no excuses for it" is just ludicrous. If our players remain fit in 2022, our supporters should have every right to be confident.

  38. I'm not sure you know who the Left are. Australia has some of the most concentrated media ownership in the world and they're all right wing. Murdoch (owns most of the newspapers, including every regional QLD newspaper and Sky News), Costello (9 and Fairfax), Seven West and Rinehart's Channel 10 (her representative on the board now is Andrew Robb, you know, the traitorous Liberal MP that sold the Darwin Port to a Chinese company when he was in politics and then went and sat on that company's board after politics). Like conservatives in Britain that constantly attack the BBC for being supposedly left wing (this is the IPA playbook for privatisation - see the IPAs 'Why We Should Privatise The ABC and How To Do It'), conservatives here attack the ABC for a supposed left wing bias. All this comes out of the Murdoch/Rinehart think tank, the IPA. Single handedly responsible for shutting down the climate debate. Abbott implemented two thirds of their policies in his first year in office. Yet whenever independent studies into ABC bias are conducted, they usually always show a plain old centrist mix of issues and equal coverage of both the major parties (like here). The problem with the two major parties is one is centrist, the other is right wing, so the whole left wing right wing paradigm is played out on the conservative side. There's not a lot of left wing about Labor. They abandoned that in the 70s, when they abandoned the class conflict. They've been raging neoliberals since 1974. If you look at the Menzies Liberal Party, modern Labor sits well to the Right of that economically. Meanwhile, we've got the Murdoch media deliberately claiming Labor are some sort of Socialists.

  45. I always assumed it was because with the hair and his playing style it looks like an enthusiastic floppy-eared Beagle puppy has been allowed on the field. He's a very tough one to judge for Rising Star chances because of his versatility. His only outstanding areas stats-wise are hitouts where he has no rivals at all, contested marks where he is in the very top group, and slightly surprisingly contested possessions where he is right up there with inside mids like Tom Green. Thing is, he is also 'good' in every other category: possessions, tackles, disposal efficiency, clearances, one percenters, score involvements and even tackles inside 50. For all these things the lists go 'specialists in the role' and then there is Luke Jackson being 'best of the non-specialists'. He is the ONLY Rising Star ruckman worth mentioning, and he is also the most complete and well-rounded footballer in the entire Rising Star cohort. It's remarkable. Heh, I've actually talked myself into believing in his chances.
