  1. Good luck to O Mac today, he’s been named as a ‘train on player’ to play for the Blues. Hope he impresses and continues with an AFL career.

  2. BTW, his dad reads and for a while posted on DL. Ess wouldn't poach him if he wasn't very highly thought of. PJ promoted him to the role so that says something and I think it is churlish to blame him for all the communication issues people perceive about the club. While I think he is a loss, it is good for his career to get experience somewhere else. I wish him every success

  3. WWSW, I think at this stage we need to pick the best 22 in search of that mythical unicorn - cohesion.

  5. Absolutely agree. Very thankful to Ryan. All the current day players and officials we have had on the podcast were organised through him. I believe the finals communications were before he became the head of comms. In any event whilst it was bad optics, had we made finals and the mail outs were late people would be bitching about that [censored] up. Damned if you do and all that. Can't blame the comms team for not making the finals. Communications have massively improved in Ryan's time at the club. I wish him all the best.

  7. I actually think our marketing department do a fairly good job considering what they have to work with.

  8. Good luck to Ryan ( don’t think I’ve ever heard the name) but this comment made me laugh after clicking on the op link/tweet. “Essendon supporters will be stoked. You can tell the Bombers really struggled last year with digital marketing, especially in the third quarter.”

  9. Guessing that's Josh Mahoney reaching in. 16 years is a long time to be at one place, especially for someone relatively young. Probs good for everyone involved really.

  11. Winning games gets new members and supporters Dr. Fastest way known. Play finals every year for the next five years and win a flag in that time and everything becomes way easier.

  13. I get it confused with spooning. When I went to the physio for treatment he suggested I try the Thai 'massage' place a few doors down, above the pizza parlour.

  17. I hope they give Sparrow, Jordon and Harmes good minutes in the midfield tomorrow. Clarry has virtually had no body contact all pre-season due to his shoulder ops, and we need him cherry ripe for round 1. It'll definitely be a second tier starting midfield with Brayshaw and Viney to miss and Oliver will be in limited game time.

  18. Yeah that's probably the case. I was hoping to get out to a session this preseason but Casey is just too far factoring in the return trip.

  20. Jackson: “The club is looking at a number of options for its future training and administration facilities, and this is one of them.” "Sudden"? It doesn't even completely happen until next year. "Totally unthought through"? Jackson: “This is an important day for the club and there has been a substantial amount of work to achieve this result.” "Without having a plan"? Jackson: “If you take the gaming revenue out of the equation, we need to make up 10 per cent of our overall revenue,” “Over a two to three year period, we will be able to readjust and grow, and we have several ideas on how to do that.” Perhaps you should take it up with Pert and Bartlett on what happened there? When did the CEO become solely responsible for the appointment and performance of the coach? What exactly is your evidence that Jackson 'tried to force' the club into that? Personally, I think leaving us with an (at the time) finals quality team, a totally revamped brand, an exit from gambling, the Santa Teresa Oval Project, a new role of Indigenous Project Officer, 5 straight years of operating profit and mroe is a pretty decent legacy when you look at where we were when he first came in.

  22. About 6-8 years ago a room was dedicated to the game at the Bentleigh club. The pull down screen was fuzzy but I doubt if it would cost much to upgrade it. There was a bar in the room and free nibbles at half time. A nice sized crowd would usually be there and it was a good experience to be among only dee fans barracking loudly and as much as we liked. Gradually each of those disappeared to the point where for the last few years, games are shown in the sports bar (with the races etc) or on small 32cm screens in a corner of the pokies room. It was like they wanted us out of there. As a result I now subscribe to Foxtel. Needless to say very few demon fans go now. In fact you wouldn't even know it was connected to mfc except for the odd bit of dated paraphernalia. There is a decent sized fan base in SE Melbourne, a carryover from the days when parts of it were in the mfc zone. No-one at the club seems interested in incorporating the Bentleigh Club into a fan experience and a marketing tool to help build memberships. The last mfc related function there was in 2014 when the players of our last premiership had their 50 year anniversary celebration there. It was there own initiative and I didn't see any mfc staff there. Tickets sold out in a day. So the demand is there to use the Bentleigh Club more creatively. It is much more than a pokie venue which seems to be the perception of current management - I doubt if any of them has been there.

  25. Pretty certain soft cap is the football department. Originally brought in to even up the competition because big clubs were spending way more than small clubs with extra development, coaches, IT and stats support etc

  26. Hunch, reading between the lines from AGM. Bartlett said the new word would be from the government. That suggests to me that he knows they are going to comment. When? Postive I think? I think they are going to announce a redevelopment of Olympic Park which will include us.

  28. Bartlett was able to hide behind (or perhaps 'bask in') the success PJ had with the club, then our finals run in 2018. He has actively sought the spotlight since, he may end up wishing he hadn't.

  34. We leaked a fair portion of our stories through Clark, so hardly a surprise he likes the guy. That said, we’ve managed the media well I’ve thought. Mostly kept things in house until they were ready to go, made sure we got a fair hearing on our side of the story and also got our fair share of press. Good luck to whoever takes over in a year that will likely be chaotic again, could see a coach firing and possibly even the board under pressure

  38. if you want speed and an occasional couple of goals - go with Hunt if you want tackling, good delivery inside 50 and intensity - go with Spargo neither is perfect

  39. This rule seems very unnecessary to me - I can see games won and lost simply by someone standing the mark moving laterally by one step - maybe even just getting balanced 50m penalty for what has no real bearing on the ability of the player to effectively dispose of the ball just seems crazy
    2 points
  40. I reckon there will be players with the ball who will run straight towards the guy on the mark and then with a few metres to go they'll dart out to one side. They'll be passed the guy on the mark before the ump has even had a chance to call play on
    2 points
  41. This is a great example of one of the things I've been banging on about. It doesn't matter what came first, it only matters when the Umpire called "play on". So an Umpire has a clear and obvious judgement, no interpretation required and a clear observation to be made. Have I called play on? No. Has the defender moved forward, back or to a side? Yes = 50m penalty. As long as this is applied consistently and it should be because there is no need for interpretation; just the 2 questions. Then I think this might be a good change and is a counter to how defensively based the game has become. If the players cannot adapt then that's on them and the Coaching.

  42. It is totally counterintuitive for a player to just have to stand and watch an opposition scoring opportunity without being able to run off to the contest. Beggars belief that anyone could be stupid enough to consider this. Well, I guess we have Gill and SHocking running the show, so anything is possible. Could become totally boring - unless the backwards kick, or even the straight lateral kick is not a mark, which is not a part of the plan (at least this version).

  43. Disagree, as soon as you ban 3rd man up you have to specify who the 2 rucks actually are to stop a decoy situation. If Gawn (ruck), Jackson (FF), Grundy (ruck) and Roughead (FB) were all at a ball up deep in our forward line we could hover Gawn around, have him pull out at the last second and then send Jackson up against Grundy with every chance Roughead bumps in to Jackson as he's defending him, triggering a 3rd man up or block in the ruck scenario. Teams would rort it as much as possible. The umps got really good last year of just identifying when both big men were at the stoppage and getting it going without delay. It just took about 3 years of umpires having conferences with the big boys first which wasn't needed. It's a necessary rule but can be streamlined as it was.

  44. Yes, they went about it in a very heavy handed manner and affected a lot of organisations that cannot afford to be unavailable - that was unforgivable! However, I do find it interesting that those who lambast Facebook for refusing to pay for news, are probably the same people who want their news free on Facebook because they refuse to pay a subscription fee for the online news services.

  46. What beats the Melbourne V Bulldogs at the Western Oval when we needed to beat them and Hawthorn needed to beat Geelong for us to make the finals for the first time in 23 years. It was the final round. With 2 mins to go in our game and holding The Dogs just about every Dees supporter at the ground was glue and listening to the radios as the siren went at Kardinia p[ark and Hawthorn hung on to a 3 point win coming from behind thanks to Dunstall's winning goal. The Dees supporters at the ground all went ballistic while our game was still in progress it felt by the players of both clubs had stopped and thinking the siren had gone. However the Melbourne boys would have worked it out quickly l believe. Brings a tear to my eye, 1987. They did it for Robbie,
