  3. The wind was definitely a factor. There were intermittent gusts coming from the east. (Big gap in between the stands on the eastern side.) That were strong enough to affect a ball drop let alone the kicks. Still mostly down to skill errors. Big positives for me was work rate behind the ball. We ran hard and set up well, lot of talk going on. Hawks on the other hand just stacked the backline in the second half. Lazy football. Plenty of Melbourne supporters in attendance. We’re as rare as hens teeth in Tassie, but showed up in force! When Gawn was rested after half time hawks started to get on top. But we fought back, particular towards the end of the third. Tactically adjusted well when the hawks tried to counter our switches. Skills improved as the game went on and you could feel the team confidence rise. Hawks backline put a lot of physical work on and off the ball into Fritter, Melksham and T Mac. They didn’t bite back. Huge smile on Fritters face after the game when they were giving out the balls. Obviously loving it! Yes there were negatives...But we won!!! Go Dees!!

  4. I don't see why Goodwin should spell out the style or the team rules for anyone outside the sanctum. Let the other mobs work it out for themselves. That's what they're supposed to do. Clarkson never talked about his 'web' before, during or after its operation that I know of.

  6. I think the description of ANB as "coaches favorite" shows personal bias unfortunately (this isn't just you either!). The coach likes him because he runs better than almost anyone and generates lots of chances at goal. The coach picks him because no one else has been able to offer those qualities in that position. When other players go past him, he'll get dropped.

  7. Personally, I couldn't care less about me, or other Dees fans, recognising our game style. I care about wins. Some wins may come from a different gamestyle, that is needed on that day. For example a wet day, a windy day, a team playing a very tall side or a small side, or whatever. Who cares if it is recognisable?

  8. Biggest positive of the night was how [censored] Hawthorn were. I doubt they missed that many targets in the whole of 2014. If it wasn’t for Ceglar they wouldn’t have touched the ball. Long may it continue.

  9. We'll pull out the masterful away final win on the road in Perth (Finally). Wce will fight back and shock the Tigers and spend all their tickets doing so. The prelim of the century takes place with a goal for goal extravaganza between us and the Pies. Tmac leads out and marks a lace out petracca bullet fron the Gawn/Clarry centre bounce clearance...for a shot after the siren. He nails it. The country goes mad with collingwood mockery and demon bandwaggonery We boringly win the GF by 15 goals.

  12. At least their supporters know what success feels like. Easy for us to get all high and mighty, but its all a bit hollow until we win something. Keeping my power dry until we snag a premiership, then i will feed it to all those bastards who gave me [censored] about MFC over the years. Now is still too early.

  13. For what it's worth someone I know has just flown into Norway from England to do some cross country skiing. The small village she's staying in has 5 people with Covid-19 and another 15 people in quarantine. She got talking to someone who's relative is one of the five with the virus but who shows none of the obvious symptoms of it. The reality is that we're probably now beyond containment so anyone with a low immune system or who is elderly should probably try and adjust their lifestyles until a vaccine has passed all clinical trials and is on the market. Everyone else needs to stop losing their [censored] over this.

  17. By God I’m pumped for Sunday fortnight. After watching the Eagles yesterday I’m confident we’re in with a very real chance of doing them over here in Perf. That was a great insight into the club. The boys look united, hungry and most of all happy. Some pretty good ingredients right there. ?????

  18. The Hawks game was built on their kicking. Who was sick of the eulogising of the great recruitment of left footers, magic kicks who consistently hit their targets? They don't have those players any longer. If you take a good look at their list they are now a very average kicking team, particularly out of defence. Burgoyne is probably their best kick and he's at the end, Bruest, Smith, Gunston. Sicily & Cousins of the younger group are ok but they're not a patch on the Premiership teams. So coming out of defence you get Frawley, Frost, McEvoy (can't see that lasting), it's why Gunston had to go back there last year. In the mids, Mitchell doesn't hurt and Worpel can't hit the side of a barn... It's why Clarkson is trying to change their game plan to quicker movement out of defence. Give him marks for trying but I can't see it going anywhere. Time for a rebuild at the Hawks..

  19. It might. TBH "game style" is one of the most over hyped terms in AFL footy. I would defy anyone, to accurately describe to me, the particular gamestyle, of each of the 18 AFL clubs.

  20. I’m in the USA, they cancelled the #1 food trade show this week with many of us visiting from all over the globe; yet have kept Disneyland open which is across the road with tourists from all over the world. they have declared a state of emergency in LA, enabling a bunch of health government things be done. and nba teams have been asked to plan for playing games with empty stadiums! the virus is coming for all communities, stay well everyone.

  21. Did anyone else think it significant that Fritsch and Melksham kicked 9 goals between them? Our key forwards in TMac and Weideman were simply mobbed every time they went near the ball - which left Fritsch and Melksham either on there own, or one on one. And for once we adjusted our game plan to take advantage of this situation. The Weid and TMac can become decoys every week if we get these sort of results.

  26. One of the things I've taken out of this game is the intensity Il Signor Patracca has brought to his game. As far as I know nobody has mentioned his contribution last night but I simply felt awe at how much more he was involved. And Viney was fantastic. I have a funny feeling that if the Injury gods treat us right this year very good things can happen,

  27. The kids got some talent - move like Pendlebury at times. Absolutely no rush though. He'd be about 10kg off his playing weight and should spend the year developing in the kitchen, gym and VFL.

  28. Lever and May together down back Petracca in the middle and Fritsch forward Langdon and Tomlinson on the wings Jones forward, Lockhart back, a rejuvenated Viney and Melksham and Kozzie lurking in the pocket There is actually a lot of significant differences to last years side.

  29. Love this kid. He has the bounce and grace of a cat and the enthusiasm of a labrador. He just makes you smile He may not be ready for senior action yet but everyone here can see bits of what Luke is going to bring. He is one of those players where the crowd noise level will rise when he is near the ball. He is going to do a whole lot of funky [censored] that hasn’t been done before. Between him and Kozzie Pickett Melbourne is going to be a lot of fun to barrack for.

  30. The precipice stands right in front of the Hawks ATM. Burgoyne unsighted, McEvoy ( 1st game back from injury), no impact. Patten grossly unfit, was completely shot by quarter time. Scully run off his feet firstly by Langdon, then Tomlinson. Smith forced to play on Langdon and then did nothing during the game. Puopolo should be retired as he had as much impact as McEvoy. No forward line apart from Patten.......... Common factor....30ish years of age! Oh how wonderful this is.....Now for Geelong!

  31. Jetta played on Burgoyne who did SFA. Hence Jetta won his position. I’m not sure where the criticism is. His primary role has always been to defend and he has always done that very well. He isn’t a play maker. Never has been. But name the last time a Jetta opponent has given us a bath?

  32. Can't believe the posters who think Jackson looked ordinary... Take a closer look! He got pushed around in the first two or three ruck contests, but then adjusted. As the second half progressed he began to get his hands to the ball first and we started to take it away from the contests. His follow up work is elite and he wasn't afraid to tackle with vigour. If you think he will be playing at Casey for most of the year, you don't recognise 'star' quality when its right in front of you!

  34. Spot on. Asides from the Hawks and Cats, I think the other sides with extremely lob sided age profiles for their sides best players would be Collingwood and West Coast. This is where I see a real oppertunity for the MFC to win flags in the next 3 or 4 years as the best of the current teams start to fall away and the age of our list profile comes into it's prime. What's also pleasing with respects to Hawthorn is that some of the youngish players they paid premiums on like Jager O'Mera and Wingard aren't really producing the rewards proportional to what they gave up for them with respects to draft picks either. On another point, yes our win against Hawthorn is only against what may well pan out to be a middle ranked side, but it's also worth noting that many of the so-called experts predict them to be in the 8 ahead of us (well before this weekend at least) and I agree with Mr.Short Temper that beating middle ranked sides consistently goes along way to making finals, although I'd contend that we also now need to get into the habit of beating the best teams as well and finish top 4. Personally, I'm quite happy for Hawthorn to never completely bottom out and spend a decade or more finishing in positions 7 to 12 - never good enough to genuinely compete and never low enough to get first crack at the cream of the crop at the draft. They should also find it harder to attract free agents from this position as well after a few years and everyone works out that they are not really a genuine premiership contender or have buckets of money left over after they pay Mitchel, O'Mera, Wingard, $culley & Co. In a similar vein, while 2019 really was not a fun year to support the MFC, perhaps we will look back on it as the hickup we had to have, particularly if Jackson, Picket and Rivers all deliver for us in the comming years.

  35. I reckon the MC will play him early ... probably round 1. Jackson isn"t going to be thrown to the wolves either (as practiced by previous regime's) He'll be surrounded by a more seasoned team and the bloke can be played in any number of positions ... relief ruck, wing, in the middle and deep forward. A floating utility is his skill set (or will be) And he's not going to be brought into a situation where he's to be relied on to play a standout role (from the get-go) The opposite could be said with Pickett but he might force the selectors hand as well. Having said all that (injuries aside) Luke might only play 12-14 games in his first season. He'll hit a wall or 2 and will need rest and recovery. The sport is now exceptionally demanding with all the 2-way running that is required. And if we hold him back, well and good. Either way, the kid looks a real talent.

  37. The kick in from May to Gawn from the goal square, which immediately led to Langdon sprinting down the wing and then delivering it to Fristch, who converted skillfully on his left, was great to watch - but, on so many levels, it also represented the significant difference between this season and last. That so many industry observers and commentators (most notably The Roar) fail to recognise these differences surprises me. Injuries permitting, we should definitely be in the mix this year. And a critical factor in this will be the May and Lever partnership - both of whom I’m hoping will be in the AA conversation by the end of this season. I reckon they’ll both prove themselves to be fantastic recruits for this club.

  40. Your comment on Scully is spot on. He is a cog and as it turns out a cog that doesn't often hurt the opposition. Wish we all had known that about him years and years ago, but it remains a lesson for the future. We copped a lot of pain to ensure we could have him and it was only ever going to be for a very small part of what makes a team. He proved to be no Judd, or Hodge, or Fyfe, or very much at all.

  41. I didn’t expect Langdon’s and Tomlinson’s recruiting to result in a whole different game plan but it’s looking like that. The ratio of uncontested possessions has gone up significantly too which I guess reflects getting the ball out into the open more with the switching. Also a much more sustainable game plan injury wise.

  43. Def not all attacking the ball together then being fo4ced to only give 1 meter handballs. Switching play due to actually having people on the wings and also we are not pressing anywhere near as high up the ground. Still bombing the ball long to outnumbered contests in our F50 though.

  44. Clarkson is so afraid of bottoming out that he has left too many players past it on their list. Paul popo is a shadow of himself from 3 years ago, thought they should have delisted him in 2018, Stratton should be retired, his only on the list because they're made him captain, and are devoid of any leaders. Burgoyne should do the right thing and retire. noticed how Frost was very reluctant to kick, bet he's been told," just don't kick it". Scully is a good player, when he's surrounded by lots of talented players like he was at GWS, Tommy Mitchell has get 40 + just for them to win. Last year we could not even beat side's like that,if you can beat most of the teams in the bottom 10 you're a long way to playing finals. Opposite to what most people think, our game plan wasn't that bad last year we just didn't have the legs to run out games, and no fit forwards to take advantage of all the inside 50s.
