  1. If its a fantasy theme, i suggest they go dressed as footballers.

  2. He’ll end up having played 319 games at an average of 21 games a season, it’s an amazing effort. I was super stoked when we got him and hope he stays on in a coaching capacity. Thanks for your service Jordan.

  3. Has been an excellent deal for the club. Many have criticised him at times but the real criticism rests in the fact that in years 2 and 3 no player pushed him out of the side. Thanks Jordan

  4. Definite no to Ross at MFC in any capacity.

  5. It would only be a fact if Goodwin told you directly, otherwise it is only your opinion and that is a fact.

  6. You are way off the mark with Petracca 'Bombay'... He has ben good in an otherwise lacklustre forward half. If we need him to be a superstar you are probably right but if we need a good player then he is it. Rather than superstar I expect him to step up to A grade for his position. He's the least of our problems.

  7. Not sure they deserve a Mad Monday this year. I've been Mad almost every Monday. I don't want to see any off season holiday partying pics either. I only want to see photos of them in the gym or running up a mountain.

  8. I'd say our 2nd round pick will get it done, given he is out of contract. He is worth it, given what he brings is something we lack.

  10. he played down back and organised our defence he played in the vfl and organised the midfield he played up forward and organised our forward set-up we'll miss him as he's one of very few 'football brains' that we have on our side

  11. Why wont the club make the right call and tell Jones his times up? He has NOTHING to offer and is selfish as f***

  14. Great pickup for virtually nothing. Nominated our club and got us up to the preliminary in 2018. Great bloke on and off the field. Leadership and good footy brain. A true champion. Media. Coaching. Relaxing. Whatever 2020 brings, he has had a great career. Hope he remembers his last few years with the Dees and might be back one day.

  15. I'm sorry, but how did he destroy either of those clubs? St.Kilda were an absolute rabble under Grant Thomas. He took them to consecutive grand finals and was one good bounce away from being a Premiership Coach. Also got Freo to a grand final and consecutive finals series but faced a once-in-a-generation Hawks side. I know he left the Saints when the wheels started to fall off, but it was only time I can remember when the Saints were actually a formidable side.

  16. No one is suggesting that they train on Mad Monday. I'm not even suggesting that they don't have a break for the holidays. I just do not want to see them galavanting it up on social media like they're champions of the world. Many should be ashamed of the season that they had. Go away. Recharge. And come back on day 1 of the preseason in tip top condition. And by day 1 I mean even the senior players should front up on first to 3rd years day. No [censored] excuses. Except for Max. He can do as he pleases but even he will rock up on day one because he doesn't have a [censored] pea heart. He has the heart of a stallion.

  17. The business case explained There’s been a lot written here and elsewhere about Goodwin’s contract length and immediate short-term tenure. Here are four facts, and two estimates, that I would suggest will drive the thinking of the Club’s board over the next 12 months. The figures quoted are in the Club’s 2018 Annual Report and are the most recent publicly available. Fact 1 Melbourne’s revenue in 2018 from football related actives was $44.8M. Fact 2 The AFL guarantees to cover player costs and other related expenses regardless of on-field performance. In 2018 this figure was $16.3M Fact 3 Revenue in 2018 from Football related activities that the club has influence over, by dint of its on-field performances, was $27.5M. Here’s the breakdown. Gate receipts $6,180,742 Merchandise $1,081,232 Membership, annual reserved seating and general fundraising $9,009,525 Sponsorship & corporate hospitality $11,287,779 Other revenue $922,363 The financial impact of 2019’s poor on-field performance could well be felt by drops in revenue across four of the line items above (i.e. gate receipts, merchandise, membership/reversed seating/gen fundraising and sponsorship/corporate). Estimate 1 According to reports today, Ross Lyon’s contract in 2019, based on Freemantle’s on-field performance, is worth 600K. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume Goodwin is receiving something similar. Estimate 2 The cost of paying Goodwin out, should the Club move on him in the next 12 moths, would be somewhere between $1.2 and $1.8 million. This estimate assumes that the pay-out would be the equivalent of the contact's balance (assuming base payment). Discussion The Club’s on-field performance directly effects, or puts at risk, part of the $27.5M in revenue (based on 2018 figures). We can assume that a good year may well increase this revenue while a poor year will almost definitely have a negative consequence. By any measure 2019 has been a poor year and it would be reasonable to anticipate that revenue from club related activities will fall. The question is, by what amount? A five per cent fall in 2019 will mean a loss of $1.377M against the 2018 figure, while a 10 per cent fall will mean $2.755M. And this doesn't factor in opportunity costs . . . that is, revenue anticipated over and above the 2018 result that will also be foregone. The problem the Club has is that this is now a ‘sunk-cost’. That is, the money is already gone and removing Goodwin now will not recover the 2019 financial situation. However . . . and presumably this is the Board’s current focus . . . If the Club doesn’t improve its on-field performance in 2020 by a substantial amount, the financial losses seriously mount. Another year where revenue is likely to be seriously down on 2018 levels makes the financial case for removing the coach pretty strong. It simply becomes a business decision. That is, the cost of keeping the coach versus removing him in order to stem the bleeding. For example, if the club has a poor year again in 2020, the potential losses over 2019/20 seasons compared to the 2018 season could well be in excess of $2.7M. It makes the case for removing the coach at a cost of $1.5M (assuming he goes during the bye in 2020) a no-brainer. Conclusion Few people want harm to come to the Club or Goodwin. However, a year like this one in 2020 is going to be traumatic for one party or the other. And that’s fact number four.

  22. Fixed for you @Kent As the "great man" Gary Lyon would say - "it's about the body of work". Goodwin, as you well know took a team to a prelim, less than a year ago, and there has been a range of extenuating factors as you also know. Ross, Bolton, Richardson - nope.

  26. Roughead has already stated that he would like to work in List Management and apparently the Dees are prepared to involve him in that area with other areas obviously to be looked at. He would learn the role of List Management probably working under our current List Manager. IMO it would all depend on whether Lewis is involved with us next year as an Assistant Coach. He has good friends at other clubs, but staying in Melbourne and at a club with his best mate and learning the area he wants to be involved in, would IMO see him with us.

  30. Great thread. I'm a reflective type of guy. This sums up my relationship with the Dee's this year lyrics below No more carefree laughter Silence ever after Walking through an empty house Tears in my eyes This is where the story ends This is goodbye Knowing me, knowing you (a-ha) There is nothing we can do Knowing me, knowing you (a-ha) We just have to face it This time we're through Breaking up is never easy, I know But I have to go Knowing me, knowing you It's the best I can do Memories, good days, bad days They'll be with me always In these old familiar rooms Children would play Now there's only emptiness Nothing to say Knowing me, knowing you (a-ha) There is nothing we can do Knowing me, knowing you (a-ha) We just have to face it This time we're through Breaking up…

  35. I suggest the club goes with a Titanic theme for mad monday. with Goodwin arranging the deck chairs, the Captains wrestling over control of the ships wheel, assistants jumping overboard, and the passengers(players) out to save themselves and fighting for a spot in the lifeboats. abandon ship!

  36. I purchase an annual subscription to this site every year and make the odd donation but have decided not to renew my families memberships next season(my kids aren’t old enough to disagree, if they were and wanted to sign up I would in a heartbeat). If I want to post on here I will. There’s also plenty of posters on here that aren’t members of the club, it’s their decision and I’d never suggest they don’t post on here. I dropped my MCC membership a few years after moving interstate, really wish I hadn’t.

  41. Can those who do not to choose to renew their memberships maybe also take a rest from demonland for 2020 too please? Maybe if things get better next year, you can come back to both the MFC and demonland in 2021? I’m just as tired of the same rants in most topics by the same protagonists as I am watching the team I love and I just want 2019 to finish. However reading the posts in this topic by frustrated but largely LOYAL demons has been a nice change from the usual posts. Thanks all. 3 of my 4 kids who have just got mcc memberships and have been MFC members all 17-20 years of their lives want to give up now that they have to pay for it. I told them that it’s cheaper to by a MFC add on membership than leave the family house and live somewhere else - so it guess its their choice now!

  42. Thanks to @Sirenfor flagging this interview with Pert Three parts are really worth noting. 1. Last years success was making the 8 on a good draw and winning two finals against teams not playing at their best. Fair comment I thought. He added that while the rest of the footy world were in raptures about our 2019 prospects Goodwin et al were saying we need to be a 3-4 game better team to make the 8. Realistic I thought given we had a much tougher draw this year. 2. Why our season was poor. In part due to preason and injuries. But also the impact of 6-6-6. Last year our game was based on playing an in tight, competitive game rather than an open, running style which requires athletes and we were not as well set up for that. We did plan for 6-6-6, which was for KK, AVB and Hunt to run up and down the the wings but we haven't had KK and AVB. And without forwards we had to play Hunt from the goal square. (Note: Pert needs to know his name is Jayden not 'Josh'). Other coaches learnt to 'divide and pull us apart so not to get in an arm wrestle and have a leg race' ie beat them on the inside outrun them on the outside comment we have heard ad nausea from other teams this year. He also mentioned it wasn't just the injuries that hurt us but also not having mature depth. It is the best summary I have heard from the club this year. In this context it is easier to accept 2019 as an annus horribilis, let it go and move on to 2020. 3. External review process. In various posts I noted that an external review wasn't necessary, that Pert working with an external advisor would be just as effective. In the last few minutes of the interview Pert says they have been working with 'external analysts including the AFL' who have provided input and given feedback. That may not be enough for those wanting an external review but Pert with external analysts is good enough for me to be confident that there is independence in the process. I had a sense that the changes will be significant. For the better I'm sure.
