  6. Wasn’t Gary Pert CEO of Collingwood when they won their last Premiership? Or let’s forgot that because it doesn’t fit the narrative? The situation we’re in doesn’t come down to one persons fault, there’s plenty of factors that have got us to where we currently are.

  9. A low grade AC joint injury that's 1-2 weeks isn't really a significant risk of further injury. They strapped it back up and had him play out the game. Adrenaline lets you do that. As the swelling and soreness continues you then have to miss a week or two before playing again. I know Jack has had his issues with injury management before but I don't think this is one of them.

  11. I will excuse him on the basis of major ops on both shoulders in the off season. When on song he's a one touch player who uses the ball exceptionally well and never panics.

  12. Creative maybe, but incorrect visual metaphor. A ‘broken record’ is where there’s a defection on the groove of the vinyl, preventing the stylus to continue its path and getting stuck in a loop, hence repeating itself over and over. This image implies a ‘smashed’ broken record, ie; a previous benchmark, milestone or achievement that has been superseded, which is not relevant to the poster’s assertion. [censored] this season is boring. ?

  14. As a diehard supporter devastated and despondent as to the position we find ourselves, I also don't want to be part of the negativity that other Club supporters, the Media and some of our own supporters are relishing. We are generally all passionate supporters on this site and and the extreme disappointment we all feel is exacerbated by the fact that there are no clear answers to our problems. However, why can't we all put that aside and actually support the boys when they really do need our support. I know that the players will be really feeling the anger and frustration of their supporters and despite their outgoing positive comments they will be hurting. I really believe we have the team to turn it around. Friday 3rd May, there is a light training run from 9.30 to 10.30 at Gosch's paddock. I really hope that we can get as many "supporters" there to show the players that we do support them and believe that they can turn it around. I know that we have the team to do exactly that but we will have to get through whatever is happening at the moment. I'm not making excuses for them. I just want to show them that we haven't given up on them. There will not be any BBQ's or marketing tents just plain old fashioned spontaneous support for our players. Let's bring back a sense of unity amongst members and supporters. Bring your dogs, children, neighbours and anyone that loves the MFC.

  15. the numbers are stark: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/demons-early-warning-on-poor-start-to-2019-20190430-p51isa.html In his presentation, Misson showed that the Demons had 39 players complete a total of 33 training sessions each in the pre-season prior to the successful 2018 season, when they made the finals for the first time in 12 years and stormed in to the preliminary final. This year, in Misson’s telling, there were just 25 players completing a total of 22 sessions each – a massive drop partly explained by high number of players who had post-season surgery.

  16. At this stage I disagree with any talk of delisting Frost. We turned over about a third of our list last year after finishing 4th! Not saying they were all wrong but we now struggle for depth so we don’t have the luxury of dumping guys like Frost just yet. Unless we have identified better replacements from other clubs. yes Frost is not a natural footballer, he is an athlete and a quite extraordinary one at that, big, strong and fast and he can catch a ball and he can kick it long. Just not a lot of finesse. at the moment we need him down back but if Lever and May come back, can we potentially use him elsewhere? If not the midfield, what about the wing where he can chase and block the opposition transition? Geelong have developed Bliscalvs in that role. Does he have more footy I Q? To stress I am not saying this is ideal, it is just trying to make full use of what limited resources we have.

  19. The same Selwood who spat the dummy repeatedly in last years elimination final where Viney played nearly the perfect Jack Viney game? The same Selwood who the Cats thought about putting on ice in the one year they didn't make finals and the one year he didn't play alongside (often multiple) first ballot future hall of fame midfielders? Not to mention the amount of times Selwood has turned a player about to tackle him in to a free kick before the league finally caught on to his BS. Viney needs to get his fitness right that's for sure and always be working on his kicking, handballing and decision making. Plus there's a lot of work to be done on leadership. Observing a similar player like Selwood might be part of that. But I don't ever want him not to take the game and opponents on head first, that's a large part of his game. Some better team mates and team work and Viney has shown to be an attacking weapon at times in his career, no reason he can't get back to that.

  22. I'm no populist Smoke ... most here get it, all the same. Robust debate and leave nothing out I say. Once vital info is left out (or conveniently put aside) myths abound. I can see why the club sacked Norm ... but many believe we sacked Norm on a whim or through sheer incompetance. I do not believe it happened that way. I mean, it just doesn't make sense to sack a 6 time premiership coach who's record after 9 games of the '65 season was 8 & 1. There was more to it.

  23. I'm very much against dropping Weideman. He needs as many senior games as possible this year with an eye to the future. We're last after six rounds and won't be playing finals, so why on earth would you drop a 21 year old tall forward in his 4th year ? He's obviously down on confidence, but tell him you'll back him. He'll learn far more at AFL level than VFL. Hés just completed six games in a row, which is the most he's ever played consecutively. I'd be getting 22 games into him. The rest of this year should be an investment in his and the club's future. What's the point of dropping him, bringing him back, dropping him again, etc. ? Some on here don't rate him as a prospect, which is fine, but this is a year to develop players for the future. If you're still desperate to play finals I suggest you re-evaluate your expectations. It just doesn't make sense to me to not give him a year in the seniors when we won't be playing finals. At least he'll enter next year as a 40+ game player. What's the point of him entering next year as a 30 game player...

  24. I'm not sure I get the love for Patton on here. If he were going cheap, maybe.... very maybe He's a power forward in his 8th season who has only kicked 130 goals in his career. He's had three knee reconstructions and last year only managed 10 goals from 12 games. He's played 89 games in 8 seasons and only made 149 tackles in his entire career. He's big, slow and doesn't influence games consistently.

  30. Culture, it was the day the clubs culture started to change from a club that was feared and expected to win each week, to a club that is happy to survive. Winning is hard, losing is easy unfortunately our club taken the easy path for the large part of 50 years. We almost changed this culture in the Northey/Daniher years, but the clubs culture won in the end. It looked like Roos, Jackson and Goodwin starting making in roads to effect change but again looks like we are heading down the familiar path off easy beats.

  34. Absolutely @longsuffering. I remember sitting through some miserable performances as a 5/6 yo in 85/86 and just pulling my beanie down over my eyes hoping that when I took it back up the team would somehow start turning the game around. I have almost the same feeling at times this season. But then we turned it around in 87 and 88 with a desperate workmanlike team, hungry for success, only to be heart broken. The nineties so full of potential yet tuned out to be total frustration. I'd rather forget most of this century. The last couple of years have continued the roller-coaster ride and whilst I thought it was unlikely we would walk into a premiership this year in a cake walk, I've been really taken back by just how poor we have been to date. I despise the current negativity around the team and consider our present performances as something more of a temporary frustration and disapointment than a more permanent imparement. These trials and tribulations will make that elusive next flag all the sweeter when it finally comes. For the real MFC supporters, Every Heart does indeed beat true for the red and blue. Living interstate, I can't make it down to training on Friday, but will certainly be doing everything I can to cheer on the team down at Carrara in a few weeks and later in the year at the Gabba. CARN THE MIGHTY DEMONS!!

  37. I have been incredibly annoyed by the inequitable fixture for years but this anger has been overtaken by the unfair advantages given to certain clubs with these bloody Academies. Another player this year who is tipped to be in the Top few is a GWS Academy player. It is so far from a level playing field that my interest is now almost zero.

  38. very true. we all saw the effect that we had on the team throughout finals and how we really helped to lift them. unfortunately, its gotten a bit tough and lots of people have hopped off the bandwagon. If we as a dedicated supporter base can get through Mark Neeld being our coach, than we will be able to get through this. Go Dees!

  42. My take on the sacking of Norm Smith ... spoils a good story but nevertheless ... Norm slandered an umpire publicly, was sued (settled out of court) and the club rightfully wouldn't stand by Norm and his slanderous comments ... in frustration he was sacked by the club and then later reinstated (a week later) His team had started to struggle (moving forward) and the writing was on the wall with regards to the less than average zones that we were allocated. Norm did the 'supporter' thing and started blaming the umpires. He brought about his own downfall in my opinion.

  43. My impression is that Lyons playing career doesn't get the credit it deserves. I cannot work out why he isn't in the AFL Hall of Fame. I think he was that good. Courageous, tremendous leader. Good in the air, a brilliant one on one mark, but equally dangerous with the ball on the ground, which is an unbelievable trait considering the issues he faced with constant back injuries. Had class to burn (IMHO second only to Robert Flower for pure class amongst the Melbourne players I've seen). A genuine match winner. Had a good finals record, with the standouts being slotting the match winner vs WCE in 1988 Elimination Final, and I think his 10 goal performance against the Bulldogs in the 1994 Semi Final tends to be forgotten due to the heroics of David Schwarz that day. Captained the Vics, which a lot of the "young folk" perhaps don't understand how big of an honour that is. Quite simply, was easily Melbournes best player during an era where Melbourne had a lot of good players and not only played finals, but won finals regularly. A lasting memory for me was a game against the Brisbane Bears in 1995. Melbourne had started the season 0-6, and were playing an up and coming Bears team at the MCG. It was a must win game if ever there was one. The natives were restless in a low scoring game as the Bears looked like winners until Lyon went into the middle in the last quarter. Leading from the front, Lyon virtually single handed dragged Melbourne over the line. Again, from a guy who was essentially a key position player, had the ability and versatility to take the game by the scruff of the neck from the middle of the ground and get his team to victory when the game just had to be won. He may have played better games in that season, but considering Melbourne missed finals by 1 game after starting the season at 0-6, Lyon must take a lot of the credit for getting the season up and going on that overcast Sunday afternoon.

  45. Wasted? I am getting a little over all of the spewing on the kids that got selected. If he was a first rounder and was cruising around like a millionaire, then OK, have a crack. But this kid was a late selection (60+) if I recall, and part of our academy. There was enough positivity about him being selected at this pick at the time, as a project type for us. Everyone overlooked the Stack kid picked up by Richmond. About 100 times he was overlooked (Draft and rookie selections), and people even overlooked him when they had room on their lists still to fill. It is not a perfect science. Gotta say that things will turn. Not everyone will make it, some will exit our system. Others may be selected in the ones and become players and do better. Some on our list will improve and make it. Bedford has played something like 5 games at this level and you are making this call? How many games did Michael Tuck play in the reserves before he got his chance? I get that everybody is pizzed off with being stone motherless last, but it getting a bit annoying that people can’t feel that way and still support the kids that we have (and will have until the end of this year at least), recognise that Casey is important to our success at senior level, and do more than just spit vitriol. I want all of them to play better, to push the seniors hard for spots and make the seniors work harder to stay in front of them. Most of these guys are just kids, and unless they are freaks will take time.
