On this day (10 July, 1858) Tom Wills wrote a letter to Bell's Life magazine which would create the Melbourne Football club. Now that cricket has been put aside for some months to come, and cricketers have assumed somewhat of the chrysalis nature (for the time being only, it is true), but at length again will burst forth in all their varied hues, rather than allow this state of torpor to creep over them and stifle their now supple limbs, why cannot they, I say, form a football club, and form a committee of three or more to draw up a code of laws? If a club of this sort was got up, it would be of vast benefit to any cricket ground to be trampled on, and would make the turf firm and durable, besides which it would help those who are inclined to become stout and having their joints encased in useless superabundant flesh. If it were not possible to form a football club, why should these young men who have adopted this new country for their motherland - why, I say, do not they form themselves into a rifle club, so at any date they may be some day called upon to aid their adopted land against a tyrant who may some time pop upon us when we least expect a foe at our very own doors. Surely our young cricketers are not afraid of a crack of a rifle when they face so courageously the leather sphere, and it would disgrace no one to learn in time to defend his country and his hearth. A firm heart and a steady hand and a quick eye are all that are requisite and with practice all these may be attained. Trusting that someone will take up this matter and form either of the above clubs, or at any rate some athletic games. You've treated me poorly over my lifetime, but I still love you. Happy 160th birthday Melbourne Football Club!20 points

It was a disgrace he wasnt in the AA squad last season, let alone the AA team. If he isnt in the AA team this year they should replace the entire selection committee.13 points

It's amazing he's only 50 games in, I just take for granted that he's going to win clearance after clearance and get the ball out cleanly to teammates. May have to work on putting the ball in front of players a bit more instead of directing it at them but that's nitpicking. He's a freak and as he grows he will add those other strings to his bow such as goal kicking. He is easily the best mid I've seen play for the Demons (I'm 36) and it's not close.9 points

I love footy, but I've lost count of the number of times over the years that I wished we'd become a rifle club instead.8 points

The majority of you are completely misrepresenting what Carey said. He said basically that: - draft picks are no good for Carlton. They have had plenty of no 1 picks and they are still where they are. And when Murphy, Kruezer and others retire these draft picks will be thrown to the wolves. - They would be better trading the pick 1 for a bunch of ready made players that can have an immediate impact and protect the likes of Curnow, McKay, etc He used an example of Melbourne which perhaps wasn't the best saying Tyson, Frost and Bugg weren't getting games and could be a potential swap but other than that it's a completely logical solution to their mess if any club would do it.7 points

I also noticed him taking the final mark on the siren to seal the victory, as well as winning a contested ball that got it inside 50 which eventually lead to the match winning goal. I guess we see what we want to see.6 points

Happy to go on record and say there is absolutely no chance, whatsoever, that he is going anywhere. Zero. No source, just confidence: belief in his character and belief that players would want to stay at Melbourne.6 points

i don't have one. One of the running gags in Get Smart was Max having something complex explained to him and him listening intently only to say after the person had finished something along the lines of 'i got everything up to....(eg listen carefully Mr Smart)' An example from a 1967 episode: "# 99: Now listen carefully. We've got to keep you out of sight for two weeks until after the Tudbury trial. Now we'll pretend to keep you here in Control headquarters. Actually we'll take you on a helicopter to hideout B, which is the penthouse suite in the Warfield hotel. Then we'll take you down an express elevator to hideout C which is the basement suite in the Warfield hotel. Then we'll take you out the back way up the fire escape to hideout D which is a shack on top of the Warfield hotel. Have you got that? Maxwell Smart: Not all of it, 99. # 99: What part didn't you get? Maxwell Smart: The part after 'listen carefully'. A bad joke on my part if it needs explaining, depending as it does on a working knowledge of Get Smart (my all time favourite TV show).5 points

Lewis made the correct decision. No point taking himself out of the play only to create a one on one. The idea was to let 2 freo players rush at the ball creating Jordan as the loose man. It almost came off. I’ll trust Jordan’s judgment with 300 games over yours5 points

Wow, Ok 18 goals 12 behinds proves to me I have an anti ANB bias. Would have sworn it was closer to 9 goals 18. May have to watch him this week with a more positive attitude.4 points

You obviously haven't listened to a recent Melbourne podcast. If there's one player not going anywhere it's Brayshaw. He hasn't strung enough games together on the back of concussion issues to be offered a big contract by another club and he loves the Dees club and his teammates. He also comes from a great family with loads of character. He's the last player you should be worried about leaving.4 points

Dont be suprised mate, they aren't asking for one but the powers that be behind the scenes are lobbying hard for it. The same pricks that gave Carlton 6 Friday Night Game are the same pricks that will allow it, so dont be suprised at all, part of their masterplan.4 points

Brayshaw won't leave. At the start of the year I thought he was trade bait, midway through the year I thought he was getting plenty of ball but being wasteful, rushed and turning it over badly. Now there's a level of composure and a familiar position to play in given he has regained confidence from his concussion issues. He's gonna be a jet and a must keep for our flag tilts.3 points

Yes, I think that is the point that has been made in the past; we are the oldest club to have continuously played at the top flight of its competition Go Dees3 points

Get ready for lots of frees to Ess this week. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-10/woosha-wants-a-meeting-with-the-umpires "Richardson has spoken to Hocking twice about the Dons' concerns over the past fortnight, while Worsfold called Kennedy last week about the 11-21 free kick count in the win against North Melbourne" And "We're not suggesting that umpiring is the reason why we win or lose, you just want clarification on consistency," Richardson said. Maybe not but they sure want more favourable treatment! I reckon the old adage: 'the squeaky wheel gets the oil' applies especially for the 'powerhouse' clubs. Damn shame we don't do the same when significantly disadvantaged by umpiring eg after the Port, Pies and Saints games.3 points

Tom Scully gets a bad rap. He would have been totally insane not to take that GWS offer and stay at the basket case that was MFC at the time. in the AFL players still don't say they are leaving until they do - look at Tom Lynch. "...lied to dying Jimma's face" - spare me! I'm totally over it - Hogan is at the club as a result.3 points

Well according to SWYL Channel 7 used their influence to get the blues as many Friday night FTA games as possible. he has seen the paperwork. Apparently they are no interested in ratings or advertising revenue. Such things are so last century. They are hell bent on getting blues the exposure their exciting brand of football demands.3 points

But I bet they raved on about Collingwood who have only beaten us out of all the teams in the 83 points
-
The footy classified show on ch 9, 9th of July 2018 said they won't talk about MFC till we beat a club above position 10 on the ladder. We suffered for years as the easy beats now we can play, they suggest this. Has it happened to any other club? What is wrong with talking about us? Us fans need to hear what the commentators views are and get some news about MFC. Are we not part of the AFL family? Why ostracize us? I hope it is tongue in cheek, though they didn't mention anything about the Darwin game and they intend not to talk about the dogs game. WOW! If we don't beat Geelong then nothing for us, peculiar. I find their statement offensive. Wouldn't happen to the bigger clubs.3 points

he ain't going no where..he's a dee. i'm sure the club has him as taking over jonesy's role (in potentially a variety of ways) heading into the future.2 points

I pretty much agree, only change I see possible is to rest Lewis and bring in Vince then see how things measure up after next weekend for the run home and number of wins required Go Dees2 points

I couldn’t agree more, I enjoyed it a lot more then I thought I would. All very impressive. I hope Jones had a chat to Phil Davis, would love him in our backline with Lever.2 points

Must say, what a fantastic conversation between 3 really interesting and different players. If only the mainstream “boys club” could be like this. Healy doing a brilliant job engaging all panelists in an insightful way. Big tick Fox Footy.2 points

This guy is honestly amazing. Not only a good footy player but from all reports a great fella. He is the sort of guy you would have as your best man without having ever met him. And best of all he is a dees man through and through. We win the gf in 2019, he should be Australian of the year !2 points

I'm fairly embarrassed reading half the negative shite describing Jordan. Yes he will get out sprinted, the point should be made that he shouldn't have been isolated or put in that position if the mids and forwards were putting on pressure tackling etc. He isn' Lewis circa 2008 but he aint done yet. Stop making him the scapegoat FFS !2 points

Great. 54 point win and people want up to 3 changes and we're back to Spargo being out just cos...... Unless someone doesn't come up its no change for mine.2 points

The bloke Lewis hit is a noted diver/stager. It looked like Lewis hit his upper shoulder but he clutched at his face. This staging BS is becoming more prevalent in our game. Mathieson & Christensen from the Lions, Joel Selwood, Lindsay Thomas and Rance come readily to mind.2 points

I wasn’t expecting him to be the huge possession winner he is. Has had over 30 possessions in 4 of his 12 games, and at least two of those where he didn’t were prior to finally being put in the guts. Having an outstanding season. I wasn’t as worried as many others that he wouldn’t hit his straps, but nonetheless it’s a relief to see him out the other side of the issues and playing with confidence.2 points

The pessimism and carry on about dropping players after such a good win astounds me.2 points
-
I still think the positives far outweigh the negatives. And he is a scapegoat right now for our issues. Our mids are frontrunners and until they work hard back against good teams - we are nowhere. It has little to do with Jordan Lewis. PS. I appreciate what Lewis has done the last 2 years - he has almost directly filled the role of two of our most important players the last two years; Viney and Lever. And as @america de cali points out - and we need - he is very unMelbourne in his demeanour...2 points
