  1. I keep hearing "Two first round picks", and it frustrates me because that is a skewed reading of the trade. The trade was (simplified) 2 first round picks for Lever and a second round pick. Effectively it was giving a first round pick next year and downgrading our first pick this year. Or like trading our first round pick next year for 2 second rounders this year. It is actually almost the same deal as giving up a first and second round pick outright.

  2. I like Jack Watts. His best football is elite. We just never saw enough of it. He has been treated respectfully by the MFC. He was told in no uncertain terms that he would be best looking outside the club and he did. Once the club decided he wasn't in their plans they did the right thing. He has received possibly more counselling and support than any other player at the MFC -- I am guessing here - because of his talent and draft status. I do know that the club has been extremely blunt with Jack over a number of years about what he has to do. That they ran out of patience with him is in my view a reflection on Jack. Even he has admitted that footy is not his life. That's fine. But its also fine that the MFC says 'enough'. I didn't mean to disrespect in my post Jack but the reality is that in time - despite being a ripping bloke - he will go down as another in a long line of unfulfilled talent. I barrack for the club. Players come and go. Go Dees.

  3. Really? How does a person "fluke" a business valued at about $200 mill? Wouldn't have anything to do with his hard work, IT nous, intelligence and business skills by chance? Pretty successful bloke at the age of 33. The company is picking up good contracts overseas, so the next 12 months will be interesting to watch. Good on him.

  7. Agreed its frustrating me too. We didnt just give up 2 first rounders as some here keep saying....we also got a second rounder back. I guess the deal will get accurately judged only in hindsight as the actual players involved make their mark. Personally Im wrapped to bring in this kind of quality...and am struggling with the negativity that took over so many on this site.

  9. As expected, a fair amount of time spent on the Jack Watts trade. Here are a few points: • Jack Watts trade - received about 300-400 supporters commplaining before and after the trade. • Garry Lyon suggested Goodwin's B&F speech about competitiveness and professionalism alluded to JW. PJ pointed out the young talent on our list, and the need for the senior players to be role models. • There was only 1 club seriously interested in him, and that was PA. Geelong's offer would have made the supporters livid. And based on his football record to date, we couldn't expect a 1st round pick. • We are paying about 15% of his contract over 2 years, which works out to $75,000 per year. Suggested that the deal wouldn't have got done without that. • Jake Lever's trade equated to giving up pick 5. Mahoney and Viney had been into Lever for a long time. • Max Gawn expected to re-sign before the season commences, and would put him amongst the highest paid players at the club. • Looking for a permanent training facility within the CBD. Won't be easy with so many stakeholders involved. • PJ signed until the end of the 2018, and spoke about the importance of implementing a succession plan. Someone texted in saying that Lewis was a bust. PJ said that Lewis and Daniel Cross before him, had a huge impact on the levels of professionalism on the training track. The players previously didn't understand what was required. Audio here: https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode/?id=149541

  10. Have had a busy week, so have only been able to finish listening today. It was absolutely brilliant! Its amazing that he hasn’t been public before as he has so many stories that he tells so well! I started getting interested in footy in the early 90s and Jakovich was plastered all over my bedroom walls. I vividly remember lying on my bedroom floor listening to the Melbourne matches on the radio and recording his goals (and his many behinds) on the newspaper team sheets- then watching the highlights with Drew Morphett at 6:30. (Kids nowadays have it too easy. Was amazing how much detail he could recall and his understanding of the game and the personalities involved is top notch. He’ll always be a fan favourite and is the kind of player you tell your kids about. The amazing thing being that all the YouTube footage that is now turning up actually confirms your memories of his skills and excitement rather than exposes them as exaggerations- he really was that good! Best of all, I’m glad he’s doing well and is happy with his life after footy. A concern when players completely vanish from the face of the earth, despite attempts to find them, is that they may have fallen on hard time. Jako sounds happy and fulfilled with his life and has put things into their right perspective and that’s great to hear! Well done on the best podcast interview I’ve ever heard.

  13. You actually unwittingly, perhaps, lay the ground here for what I would think to many is possibly the crux of the matter. "an average player" this sort of thing goes with "#1 draft pick" etc etc. Is it too much for anyone to treat ALL the players irregardless of success/failure/ whatever to be accorded some dignity ? It's irrelevant in some manner who he was other that he had the 'temerity' when we were shizen to be like a number of folk who stuck phat !! In the end they are a jumper number. They are a player number for the club. They have their own lives to lead and Jack's is now rebooting at another locale. Such is life. But it doesn't matter , nor should it what sort of player any of us consider him . He's been a standup fellow when often around him things were falling down and quite possibly THAT and not his actual playing career at Melbourne should be recognised. Good luck Jack Go Dees

  14. More specifically with our plans this draft to take 4 picks where we started with 10, 27, 45, 63, 81 After compensation picks ... Watts pick in 31, Balic pick out 66 ... Trade 2nd rounder: 10, 31, 47, 84 Trade 1st rounder and get Crows 2nd back: 29, 31, 36, 47 It's actually 10 + 84 vs 29 + 36

  19. I suspect we need all the supporters we can get. Chances are anybody who cares enough about the club to ring up a radio station is a pretty devoted member. Bit of criticism, the odd hissy fit - all part of the rich tapestry.

  20. Most likely someone from here. We gave up nothing - 9 spots in the third round and 2 spots in the fourth round of the draft - for someone who finsihed equal 3rd in our B&F and who oozes leadership. It's staggering that some supporters feel this way.

  24. I agree with that summation. I tend to think of Jack as being somewhat similar to Sylvia... definitely not in what he got up to outside the club, but in terms of him giving the impression that he liked the "status" and "fame" associated with being an AFL star, more than the work involved in taking it to the next level. They both demonstrated moments of brilliance, but more often than not, demonstrated moments of mediocrity.

  28. Posted this in another thread, but my main wish is that we get a lot less 6 day breaks and an even time to recover as what our opponents do. Given we were a younger team I think with a more even draw we would have been better placed to recover. You can see how we fared against the draw for the top 8 teams and clearly we got a poor draw, so I'm hopeful PJ will be addressing this and getting us the same advantages as other teams have. 6 day breaks Playing teams on 6 day breaks Games against teams with shorter breaks Adel 7 10 10 Geel 8 9 8 Rich 6 5 8 GWS 5 7 9 Pt Adel 6 5 8 Syd 6 7 10 Ess 7 7 9 WC 6 5 5 Melb 9 2 5

  29. Are you blaming Jack Watts for Princess Di's death now Ernest? That is an angle I hadn't heard before ...

  30. He played mainly wing which is a position that we've has some good ones in. Alves, Flower and for me anyway, Tingay have him covered. His Brownlow was certainly a surprise. I thought Stephen Powell had a better year for MFC. Kouta was pretty dominant that year & I thought he'd bolt in the Brownlow. That said. Woey had a fantastic year in 2000.

  31. I heard some logic that the Lever deal was bad because we gave up next year's first rounder which we could spend on a proven quality player. Well, that's what we did this year!! Why sit on our hands for a year? Patton: a good plan executed today is better than a perfect plan executed next week.

  32. I didn't get the sense at all that PJ would be leaving after 2018. Besides which the whole point of his discussion was a transition plan and with only a year remaining on his contract, that's unlikely to be before his current contract runs out. I'm glad he stuck up for Viney and Taylor, who he said would have drafted Lever in his draft year. The insinuation I got was we'd kept in contact ever since. His comments on Watts were comforting in that they completely aligned with mine and many others on Demonland. He inferred Jack was a nice guy (who he'll catch up for coffee with when Jack returns from overseas), but he played nice out on the field and we no longer want to settle for nice. I'm glad we traded Jack and I'm certain it won't bite us in the arse long term. The other thing PJ mentioned was that he's sure Jack will be back at the club one day. I hope this provides some solace to the small group who are angry about the trade.

  33. Personally I do. Bartlett also thanked him publicly as well. He’s moving clubs, no need to go over the top. I think people are just looking for things to continue to criticise the club over.

  34. From the MFC website: http://m.melbournefc.com.au/news/2017-10-17/watts-traded-to-port-adelaide From Mahoney: “I would first like to thank Jack for his contribution to the Melbourne Football Club,” he told melbournefc.com.au.He will always be welcomed back to the club as a Melbourne person and we wish him the very best for the future.”

  35. Also I would like to say Melbourne have handled this badly.. if you look at the Port website how they farewelled the players they traded, it's like chalk and cheese. Why didn't MFC say goodbye gracefully?? PFC put up a highlight package for or their players and wished good luck. Melbourne did nothing except criticise. Could have been better

  36. It it's all over, it's sad, but Jack has had to move on and so has MFC. I wish all the haters would remember the good times.! It's over and he was loyal but now he plays for Port.

  39. Picks after the top 10 are overrated these days. Free agency has completely changed the landscape. We've got an outstanding young core of Hogan, Petracca, Weideman, Viney, Oliver, Hunt, ANB, Lever, Salem, Brayshaw & OMac, plus others who may still come on like Harmes, Stretch, Balic, Johnstone. We don't need heaps of draft picks in the next 2-3 years, we need free agents and ready to go players to fill needs. I've got a feeling the Watts movement is a part of that with someone like Gaff a FA at the end of the year. It's time we put all our eggs in the winning a flag basket.

  40. I'm one of your babies. Did I want Lever? You bet. That doesn't mean you can't have an opinion on whether we had to give up next year's first rounder to get him or you're a baby. The net points total for the Lever deal was 2057 which included their pick 36, this is actually closer to pick 4 than 5. If we'd let them keep pick 36 and given them the Watts pick 31 it would have been 2091. So a better result for the Crows and we would still have had a first rounder in a very strong draft next year and a second rounder in this year's weak draft instead of 3 second rounders. It's actually closer to pick 4 not 5 and using this to justify . The Crows were desperate for Gibbs. This time Carlton went to them not the other way round because they realised this was the last year they'd get any real value for him as a 29yr old and they had players they wanted to bring in and are rebuilding. Last year they didn't want him to go and so demanded a ridiculous 2 first rounders. This year they initiated the trade so I therefore have no doubt there could have been a three way negotiation so they effectively got what we gave for Lever which I have no doubt wouldn't have required our first rounder next year. We are all happy now that we've got Lever but it's going to hurt next year when we don't have a first rounder in a top draft and that could have been avoided.

  42. Do you think these keyboard heroes taking potshots know the difference between a public position and a private position when it comes to negotiating? Do you think other clubs would have thrown the kitchen sink at Lever? I do. Picks are overated compared with proven talent.

  47. He is another I'd love but I reckon he'll fall between 10 and 27 so mightn't be able to get him. I watched him a couple of weekends ago in ballarat and for someone who looks like a typically outside player given his physical stature, some of his defensive efforts, tackling and spoiling was super impressive. He looks like he'll be a very very good player. A great balance of attributes. Super quick, beautiful left foot and was happy to scrap. Looks like a classier version of Jasper Pittard but with the same competitive nature.
