Apologies to those who missed the updates as I was posting them on the Match Day/Team Selection thread. I arrived as the team was doing their warm up and instantly noticed Viney, Tyson, Jones, Watts, Salem and Bugg were not present. Of the long term injuries only Vanderberg was there. Once the warm up concluded the team was split into several groups for some ball work. That is when I noticed Trengove in a group of 4 having a lazy kick to kick. The other 3 were White, Maynard and Vandenberg. That basically proved to me Trengove would not be selected this week. On the other side of the ground was Weed, Spencer, Ben Ken, Keilty, King and Johnstone doing some light drills. This also ruled out Weed. Hogan, Pedders and T Mac were competing in one on one marking drills with each winning their fair share. I thought this set up might be the one to go with up forward on Sunday. Shortly after, the team was split into respective positions for more ball work. Backs were made up of Oscar, Wagner, Jetta, J Smith and Frost. Frost looked unrestricted in movement but did consult the doctor pointing out his buttock area for a few short minutes and then was back into it. This drill basically consisted of high kicks and spoiling. The midfield set up was interesting. Max and Pedders would contest ball ups and the mids would try and win clearances. The players in that group where JKH, Lewis, Vince, Harmes, Stretch, Hannan, Oliver, Trac, Melksham and Brayshaw. There were two teams of 6 in this drill and they looked as sharp as ever. Forwards were Hogan, Garlett, Kent, ANB and T Mac. This was a simple drill of high kicks and some contested marking. Hunt and Hibberd were together in what seemed like a link up type of drill. One of the coaches would kick to them and in turn they would turn quickly with the ball and kick it to another coach. This drill lasted about 10 minutes. Next, they moved to a half ground match simulation. The defence as mentioned above lined up on the forwards also mentioned above. Hunt and Hibberd were also in this drill along with Brayshaw. The ball would start at the back of the centre square with Lewis usually starting the movement and the ball would move up the field quickly to the forwards. This pleased me the most, Hogan and Garlett were moving quick and looked sharp throughout. Hogan is clearly keen to get back in there and he was a sight for sore eyes. From his marking to ground ball winning he looked great. A lot of love for this guy from teammates and coaches. He was even dirty at himself for not taking clean marks and missing targets by a short distance, Jesse just breathes football. Simply awesome watching him train. The ball movement was crisp and precise most times and the boys definitely look refreshed and eager. To finish off they participated in a leisurely type of drill where the final link would be a defender trying to snap or banana a goal from all over the place. The whole team roared when Oscar snapped a beauty ala Buddy style from 40m out. Celebration by Oscar was great too. Brought a laugh to everyone watching this as Frost and Smith were trying opposite foot snaps on the run. Pleasant viewing. Players slowly made their way out of the track and stopped for endless photos and autographs. Whilst that was going on Brayshaw continued to run with Cross and was clearly putting in the hard yards. He participated in the whole session and still had energy to keep on running. Fantastic sight. Clearly the positives were Jesse, Gus and to a lesser extent Garlett in which he looked really nippy and clean with ball. Another positive is the team got through the session well and let's hope they replicate it on Sunday. Did I mention how good it was to see Jesse out there?18 points

I have given up waiting to see trenners get another game. If ever there was a week to play him, it was this week.I really had hoped he could go around for one more game and try and prove to the world he was the jack of old. It's over for him at the MFC, and it that hurts to admit.8 points

This week Goodwin says we want to play on the edge but need to be more disciplined. And Bolton takes the moral high ground: "...We haven't crossed the edge there and had ridiculous reports or anything...Our players are human and they understand what went on last time, but our players are not only disciplined, they are professionals..."We need our team to play on the edge, but just as importantly we need our team to stay disciplined, which they have all year." http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-07-08/blues-can-keep-their-cool-under-fire-bolton Hmmm...not sure I like the holier-than-thou attitude from Bolton. Clearly, he has a team of little angels! They will be out to taunt us again and the umpires will be looking out for 'undisciplined' acts from us. Our players need to keep their hands down and elbows tucked in. Let their football do the talking!!7 points

If Johannisen played for us, this would go to the tribunal and JJ would be denigrated for falling over after making slight head high contact with a padded surface. Walker would then receive an apology for any stress caused by putting him through the unwarranted attention.7 points

Trengove for Tyson surely when Jones and Viney are out too? It's impossible to imagine a scenario where he plays now. A mistake IMO.6 points

The thing about that footage (apart from the lack of love for Hibberd's spoil) that gets me is that nobody gives Oscar credit for a great pass. That was an incredibly difficult thing he did with only a second or so to look and execute. Here's what they had to say: 3AW "a little dribbler.: MMM he "hacks it forward." ABC "a little toe poke." AFL Nation "dribble kick out." I know it gets overshadowed by the awesomeness of the finish at the other end, but Oscar deserves more credit than that. Everything that Harmes and Watts did came off the back of his quick thinking.5 points

You should drink some of your own bath water with regards to that last paragraph. Most of the People who would like Jack to get a game are not outright advocating it. Much of the debate has been surrounded by the information we know but it stops at "Jack is on the cusp of selection" and "he's working on a few things, he knows what he has to do." The absolute fact that he's been listed as an emergency a couple of times suggests that he's getting close to whatever Goodwin is talking about. He's been moved around the ground - most likely in part to add the extra elements to his game. I hope it results in a senior appearance before seasons end because it would be nice end to his time at the club. I get that the game style is making it difficult for a player of his make-up to break into the 22 but again, he's listed as an emergency so anything is posssible with a little more effort.4 points

As your position is shifting so is mine. Not about Lever, but about who perhaps is gettable and can provide some outside pace and be that connector we're presently missing. I think Lever is perfect for us in that he is going to be the best key defender in the competition for a decade. I worry about the NQR McDonalds and the NQR Frost. All three have some great attributes, and Oscar has come on in leaps and bounds, but the opportunity to get a player like Lever doesn't come along often. But where I've shifted is on Kelly. As good as he's going to be I don't see how we can get both he and Lever, such is the expense. My compromise is Zac Jones and I know I'm late to the party. It's taken longer for me to warm to him than others. Not being the most sentimental supporter I suspect my resistance was borne out of a desire to make good decisions and not allow any family connection to influence good policy. But in doing so I've probably marked him harder than I should. I still think he has plenty to work on, but his performance last week reinforced the view he's exactly the type we need running the lines. And I'm guessing he'll probably cost approx. $300-400K pa less than Kelly. So it's a more doable solution for a result that won't be the same, but still very good. They could obviously both resist moves back to Melbourne, however, Lever has recently discussed it as being a "life decision" on 5AA. the fact he's put off re-signing gives some hope. Jones would know that if he ever wants to play with his Brother he must come back next year. If he commits to the Swans for another 3 years the time will have probably passed. The general consensus is that he'll probably stay at the Swans, but once again, the fact he hasn't re-signed gives hope. He's a Mornington Peninsula boy who's never known Sydney and he's close to Nathan, so I think there must be some pull to come back home. Who knows if it's enough. Lever and Jones in the off-season would allow us to seriously challenge in 2017.4 points

Not only is it a heap of our best players out with injury, but many are our leaders or main influencers. This is the reason I don't understand the omission of Trengove. I understand that his excellence at VFL level might not immediately transfer to AFL level footy, but his leadership and steadiness would havebeen invaluable. Disappointed for him.4 points

I stopped reading after this "WE PUT six burning questions to premiership coach Mick Malthouse about the recent on-field and off-field issues that have slowed Melbourne’s run at the finals" Slowed our run at the finals lol, we lost 1 game after 3 six day breaks and injuries to some of our best players, on field and off field issues has nothing to do with it3 points

To me Tex's was more about shielding the goal through and JJ went into the post because of a combination of Tex's bump and him being off balance. Tex also showed remorse, compared to Hodge who claims innocence when he lined Wingard up. Should've been at least 3 weeks that one, it was such a dangerous act. I think Tex will get away with nothing answer, but I'll be happy for him to get a week!3 points

I must say I went out there today. Nice ground - terrible game, at least from our point of view. I find it interesting, watching today, there was no lack of endeavour from our guys, they simply didn't have the class to finish. Dare I say, a symptom, of teams outclassed when they run out of players who cannot compete at levels they are in. it looked a lot like us against the Swans, and before that like us against Geelong: not a class issue for the overall side, simply we had run out of warriors who would normally be in the team. The question is whether this applies on Sunday. I hope not, as I think we have sufficient cattle returning this week, but it will still be a challenge. Go Dees!3 points

Smith moved well throughout the session and by observing him from ground level I was surprised at how smooth and quick he moves. Watching him move with confidence was pleasing and my first thought was, he would be a great match up for Cripps when he has a stint forward. I realise his selection has surprised a few but Goody has shown us before the faith he has for certain players. Best example, Wagner. Wagner missed the first part of the season and was brought in on the back of one game for Casey.3 points

Who from Casey did you think was equipped to replace Viney or Tyson ? We've got plenty of players in the senior team that have spent years in the midfield, but have been pushed out of the top 5 or 6 core. Players like Lewis, Vince, Melksham now get their chance and with Oliver, Petracca, Neal-Bullen, Hannan, Stretch, etc. it's not all doom and gloom. One thing I like is our speed. Hannan, Hunt, Garlett, Frost and Smith are lightening. I reckon our pace can really worry Carlton.3 points

Melbourne Footy, the person who uploads these videos, deserves lots of kudos for this. Constantly uploads great stuff to YouTube after every win and I've watched some of them countless times. Not sure if he/she posts here but, if they do, thanks very much for your quality uploads each and every week!3 points

Even Harmes kick was to a spot Watts could run onto. If that is a kick where he tries and hits the target and it drops short then Watts is held up. But he chooses to put it out in front and it was the right option executed well.2 points

A great example of the soft underbelly of our supporter group. Anyone who can't see that Jack is finished as an AFL player, should not offer comment when he is denied a game. Todays game is run/spread, Zone/defend your area, then run run run when you have the ball. Jack has great hands, a good football brain, but nothing else of value in todays game. Try to control your emotions when he is inevitably delisted at years end.2 points

Fox Footy on Tex's dirty push: Just a weird accident, nothing to see here, deserves the benefit of the doubt. Anyone who doesn't think the media has a clear agenda to protect certain players is kidding themselves. This will be conveniently forgotten with haste.2 points

Was saying just a few weeks back, that with the general playing attributes of our forward starters, we basically had a set-up full of mediums. Now with Watts and Bugg out, and Hannan and Petracca pushed up to the centre-line (with Harmes likely to run through the middle a bit more this week), replaced by a mix of Hogan, Pedo, Tmac and Kent starting forward with Garlett, we practically have no mediums up front but an arrangement of talls and smalls. There's a great deal of inbuilt versatility there though, and I hope we use this to our advantage by rotating set-ups and tactics to unsettle the Blues' defence. If in one moment you've got to contend with Hogan, Pedo, Tmac and Max drifting forward, and in the next, Tmac is floating off half back, Hogan is in the middle, and suddenly Petracca and Hannan are lurking around, it's going to keep you on your toes.2 points

If trenners couldn't get a game this week with all our outs then that's it for him, I hope he gets a gig at another club next year as no one deserves some luck more than him and I would applaud him if he ever ran out against us2 points
