POSTGAME: QF vs Collingwood

Still feeling incredibly flat.

Can't help but think this is the one that we'll look back as the one that got away. Such a completely different feeling to this time last year.

Was just hearing on SEN that Port are currently the walking wounded and if they beat the giants I feel like we could have gotten them at their most vulnerable.

Trying to stay positive but it's a challenge to be honest. Worried that this game has mentally sucked the life out of the players.

I know Port thrashed the Giants recently, but the way the Giants are playing recently, I think they’re a good chance. I think we’d have been vulnerable to them in a Prelim, because we’d go in favourites, which doesn’t seem to suit us, but also we are vulnerable to their fast and skilful game style. Collingwood could be vulnerable to the Giants as well, but then they have the intimidating crowd factor, the umps etc to count on, so will likely easily beat whoever they play.

If we can get over Carlton and not suffer any more significant injuries, Brisbane might freeze on the big stage, Joe D and Hipwood could kick 6 points rather than 6 goals, and then we have the chance to revenge ourselves on the Pies, hopefully without the backbone provided by their ‘heart and soul’ enforcer/attack dog thug.

My anger/sadness/depression usually subsides after 24-48 hours but in this case I would say it has actually gotten worse as the days have gone on. Today is horrible, I don't know what to say. 

That game was for all the marbles, there's no other way of putting it. The difference between the two paths is large, very large.

Very, very hard to stay positive.

I am feeling an ongoing anger that is with me from the moment I wake. I’ve been told by my partner I have this one more day to talk about Gus and Thug then after that I’m sleeping in the bath if I bring it up again. I agree the players looked flat, but hopefully their spirit will lift as the week goes on, (if they’re not also sleeping in the bath it would help), and they channel their frustration and anger into the destruction of the Blues.

It is a wasted opportunity but the one glimmer and maybe it is for the Lions more than us but we are on the toughest side of the draw and one of Melb, Carl, or Bris will win the GF by 8 goals (Dees by 4 goals).

It is Monday morning and time to move on. As callus as it sounds, we need to stop focusing on the Brayshaw/Maynard incident and get ready for another monster battle. Just a few tweaks and we will this flag.

I would love for Greene to run through one of Collingwood's players and then watch their inbred fans have a total meltdown about it, while we tell them all to 'get over it, it's a footy act'.

GWS with Bedford and Hogan winning the flag would be FAR better than Pies, Blues or Lions.

I'm not focused in the Brayshaw incident.  I've moved on from that as you say.

Yes the game dies down, but some intent from the first bounce says to other teammates let’s go.

Unfortunately that first quarter partly cost us the game.

Theres no more second chances from now, we do the same against Carlton and it’s ‘what if’.

I think there were 92000 people at the ground who knew Cox would do that. Max seemed to be the only one unaware.....

Couldn't agree more.  The most important thing this week is the mental resilience of the players and belief we can still climb the mountain.  Our midfield is thin against a fully fit contested team (eeek).  Our tall forwards are well below AFL average. 

But we've shown great resilience now for almost 3 years so it's in the culture.  I'd love for guys like Chandler, Pickett, Langdon, TMac, Hunter to play match winning games and take the pressure of  our elite who honestly stand up every week.

Damn right. Both us and the Blues have selection headaches (unless their lawyer performs yet another miracle). Get through that and then its the same equation for the last four; two wins for the flag.

I'm usually pretty upbeat about opportunities, and this one bummed me out a bit more than normal, mostly because we lost it, rather than got beaten, and the path for the Pies is now much easier than ours.

BUT - right now (maybe it's the coffee I am drinking), I'm feeling OK. 

There are really only one of two ways the first bounce goes this Friday.

Either we breathe FIRE from the first second - because the reality is we entered the finals better than last year (aside from the decimation of our forward line - but we were finding ways to score, and our defence is solid) - and the boys will know that and will not let the blues take this from us. They may have a few obviously solid guns, but we are a better team, even without a forward line (with a forward line we destroy the Pies, and GWS/Port en route to the GF... ), in our last game they played out of their skins, we were average and we only lost due to arc madness. With everything on the line, I think the Blues are tiring and we have a statement to make. It's overdue now. 

OR we come out the same way against the Pies. Sleepy, late, sloppy, bombing balls into the 50 with no learnings at all, having to chase, in which case we likely lose, because the Blues will bank on that, and will probably expect it. Then we have to deep dive over summer because skills aside, there's a mental issue - 2 straight sets with our list is v bad.

BUT - I think it's the former. We come out and raise hell for 4 quarters and give the Lions something to think about. 

(I think we beat the Lions, we just have to get there)

I'm actually surprised this hasn't made twitter (or at least from what I've seen). I saw that interview and shortly after the Brayshaw hit, that quote came to mind. I know he was saying it in jest, but it's not a good look. If it wasn't a final, would Maynard have gone full tilt jump in the air to spoil that? Probably not. He plays on the edge and he would have wanted to make any sort of impact early.

It just sucks because it's Tuesday now and I still really want to keep complaining about it. It's starting to annoy everyone around me.

That’s the biggest problem for us this week. If we aren’t switched on from the first bounce it’s curtains. We seem flat as a club with all that’s gone on.  Now that either galvanises you and drives you to redemption or it crushes you and we’re out. It’s all in the head this week. A visit from John Northey might do the trick. 
 

One thing you can guarantee and that’s Carlton coming out pumped, ready and smelling blood. We need to make it their blood. (Metaphorically speaking)

This is one of the few times I'd want to be coached by Luke Beveridge rather than Simon Goodwin. Bevo would have the whole club breathing fire and running through brick walls.
