Does this not look like a smothering acting to you first?

Certainly does to me...Screenshot_20230907_235340_Gallery.thumb.jpg.7ff0aa32593df600839cc7ce0f296ed7.jpg

It actually doesn't matter whether it was a football action or not. Look up the rules mate.

Grading can either be classed as intentional or careless.

If you're saying it wasn't intentional, then it was careless.

There are then four impact grades for careless conduct.

1) severe impact (high is 3+ matches).

2) high impact (high is 2 matches).

3) medium impact (1 match).

4) low impact (fine).

Explain to me how that was careless and low impact.

People ask why he turned is shoulder mid air... (face-palm).

If anyone on here has played any level of football or contact sport for that matter, you will understand that when the body is in a vulnerable position and you have little to no time to think, you're going to brace to protect yourself.

He will get off because it will be deduced that he had no other reasonable choice when in mid air.

How this gets past people is beyond me.

Interestingly I reckon the Maynard incident has similarities to Van Rooyen's spoil earlier this season in the sense that the attempted spoil and attempted smother were both footy acts.

The difference for mine is that Brayshaw had the ball and was running directly forward and while Maynard jumped and put his arms up to smother he cannoned his body into Brayshaw.  I think Maynard must be suspended not for trying to smother but making the decision to jump directly into Brayshaw when executing the attempted smother.

You can only laugh.

Still genuinely shattered. This game tonight will eat me up for the next 6 months over the summer.

The 21 premiership still provides me with heaps of comfort and masks the hurt, otherwise I’d be right there with you. I only ever needed to see one, I’d love to see more, but I only ever needed to see one. The euphoria of that night trumps all the hurt losing could ever give me.

Our two must successfully tried forwards this year albeit short lived were Melksham and Petty.

Rotten luck that we don’t have them for finals.

On a side note, are we missing Spargos forward connection nous?

If Hunter got a week for what he did, Maynard has to get a much bigger penalty

For goodness sake, Brayshaw was knocked out cold and carried off on a stretcher and Maynard somehow gets off? Cripps all over again won't be happening this time as the technicalities applied back then are no longer a thing

Maynard is gone big time otherwise they might as well disregard all the talk about protecting the head along with avoiding concussions

If he gets off get set for more front on 'attempted' smothers ... we'll see a rash of them ending with the shoulders slamming into various heads ... a free-for-all

The love for Maynard on this site make me puke. He jumped off the ground. Brayshaw had no serious forward momentum and was wide open. Maynard could easily have used his hands to block but turned his shoulder and smashed him in the head. It was at worst intentional at best careless. He then get a chance to plead his case. In the meantime we lose a key player possibly costing us the game. Spare me the bs it a footy incident.

I agree but I also think he'll get off

Unfortunately tonight had 2022 feels

We aren't playing with any dare or freedom.

While i understand the importance of systems and structure, i get the impression we are almost too hell bent on mantra of...

"win the contested and press high for multiple repeat entries and the wins will look after themselves"

I would argue yes, in a standard H&A match, especially against average and below average oppos this will hold you in good stead the vast majority of times.

Finals is a diff kettle of fish.  You're playing the best teams, especially if you finish in the top 4 you will be playing the best of the best.

As i've said a few times before, you can win the contested and inside 50 count in a big fashion but unless you hit up targets in 30 - 35 meter hot zones more often, AND the receivers convert at least half the time or better, you can kiss theses opportunities goodbye year after year.

Our problems lie with a poor finishing mid field coming i50 and a dysfunctional forward line that doesn't work hard enough to get on the end of enough ball by leading their arses off.

Too many KFs sit too deep waiting on the long ball making our forward 30 - 40 meter area too easy to defend and our mids / wingers either kick it down the line too often OR, when they do try to kick it to the open fat side, no one is leading there.  But somehow oppo defenders are around who end up running it out with ease.

Some major corrections needed this week if we're to have any chance of making a prelim and avoiding a 2nd year of straight sets.

There are also some players who just weren't up to the heat of the battle tonight.

Leaving out Tomo last week was a mistake.  Leaving him out this week... that was just foolish.

One week to right a pretty rocky ship Simon and make a few personel changes.

Can it be done?  Yes but he'll need to take a few reality pills over the usual stubborn ones me thinks.

I thought we had timed our run well and were primed. We’ve shot ourselves in the foot big time. Squandered a huge opportunity. Trac was disappointing. Viney was ineffectual. Salem no impact off half back. Lever flapped and cost us a couple of goals. A lot of players need to lift and redeem themselves in the semi

I understand everyone is frustrated, but this is one ugly postgame. Love the folks that came back here after a loss just to wind people up.
This one is stinging a fair bit because the game was on our terms since half way through the second quarter.
25 points down at the last change in a low scoring affair is a massive lead, but you could sense our supporters knew it wasn’t over and we nearly got there.
May and Maynard had a very interesting exchange in the middle of the ground after the game, a lot of pointing going on.

Let’s not give up on the boys and hopefully a lot of us turn up next week.

Yeh.

We'll see. Another consideration in this instance will be Brayshaw's kicking action and follow through.

Both players were running forward and had serious forward momentum, Brayshaw really lunges forward after kicking on the run and clearly that adds to the impact whilst Maynard is in the air also moving forward.

It's just a seriously unfortunate incident. And I hope Brayshaw recovers fully.

Yeah and every year that someone wins one on the G will just leave some sour after-taste. Especially if it's Collingwood this year.

Agreed. I thought we looked primed, and bar a nonexistent fingernail from Marchbank would have gone 8 straight into the finals.

Tonight we looked flustered. We didn’t handle the pressure at all. 70% of our team would be hugely disappointed with their effort.

you might want to check Goodwin's presser. He seemed pretty chuffed winning three quarters of territory. Nothing will change in terms of game style.

We're not far off being unstoppable imo.

Tweak our offence. Give up a tad more defensively and I think we'll be golden for the next few years.

I think this next off-season needs to be a big one in regards to personnel coming into our forward line and some additions through the midfield. A bit of method adjustment too and a rocket for some repeat bomb it in offenders.

Yep some very disappointing performances from some vital players.

Viney with 0 clearances is unheard of. Salem again just did no damage. Trac too little too late and blew chances going for goal yet again. Langdon was horrible on Sidebottom. Hunter not enough involvement. Even Nibbler was not his usual brutal self.

I don’t expect the likes of Roo and Chandler to stand up. They are kids. They have no experience. Chandler especially plays such a hard role when the ball is just being bombed to 90 Pies players inside 50.
But I actually thought that Bowey, McVee and Sparrow were all just fantastic today. Which is great to see.

Lever was only ok and again it’s because we didn’t have another tall there to help him peel off and intercept. May was so so good. His will to win is next level.

I love your passion jaded but you should never wish an acl on a player. It’s the worst injury in sport. Cox is snide and Maynard is a peanut for sure but a players career is short. I just hope Maynard gets the ban he deserves. And I would not mind seeing a stray knee in coxs back

I tend to agree but for Cox I'll make an exception. The guy has no redeeming qualities, he can get stuffed

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”?
