We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

How far away is Matt Jefferson?

We gave Sam Weideman 4 years after his 2018 breakout and showed patience but it didn't work but Chin Tmac Sparrow and Laurie are proof that a little time especially for key position forwards is worthwhile and the rewards are definitely there.

T. Hawkins says Hi!

Hawkins was a beast from Day 1

Kicked 5g in his first game against us. He is the polar opposite of jefferson.

Hawkins was a diff type yes but we were a basket case on 09,10, 11 thru to 2015. He didn't breakout really until the 2011 GFinal last quarter and still kicked badly that day as Stevie J got a handpass goal from Tommy in the early stages of that last term to almost seal the Pies fate.

MJ May never be a brute but as was mentioned Josh Kennedy is his prototype and never stopped him! He even should have been rubbed out about 3 times and got lucky ( Once vs us in Perth diff rules over there!!! ).

To be honest Andrew wasn't copping as much criticism in his first year as much as what Jefferson has. Andrew was at least performing well enough at VFL to warrant senior opportunities which he's obviously used as a stepping stone for this year to play good AFL footy. I have provided his VFL stats to prove that.

Anyone that has a 0 stat next to his name on game day will always cop criticism regardless whether it's a first year player or senior veteran.

I don't see it as people canning Jefferson as you as you say. I just see some are just holding reservations on him purely because some maybe expected more from a first round pick.

I'll admit, he didn't impress me as much the few tines I watched him this year but neither did McVee last year. But no way am I certainly writing him off as it's his first year in the system.

I prefer to use the Judd McVee model of seeing what a full pre season will do for him.

Good point DD and for what it's worth I am in the Picket Fence camp on MJ.

He will be a very very good player for us in the future. Just give him time as my earlier post suggests.

Really up to matt

He has to get it together next year and start  pushing for senior selection

Laurie ( although out nearly all first year injured) has taken 2 years and about a dozen VFL and 2 AFL games to mature and I am genuinely excited about his potential. (Think Sam Mitchell style) ie not fast but clean and good on both sides of his body. Will be very hand today if subbed early enough I hope!). Nearly 2 seasons slower than Judd but who cares if they are given a chance to make it now under our system. MJ could be same. Doubt whether we can give all players 6 years like Maxy but thank g.d we did.

A Roos/Goodwin win and TJ and Lammie  so far credit for Bill L.!!

We will know more concerning progress by the end of the next VFL season and the one after (should be getting a few AFL games). Bit early for us to judge but the club would know more and have extended his contract - shows some confidence.

In the meantime we sorely miss Petty who is the penciled in FF next year with JVR and Fritter as support.

Schache as depth. Brown's knee is stuffed.

Still plenty of time to develop Jefferson.

If we can nab pick 4 off GC will we go for a Caddy who has immense talent as a 192/3cm forward who may be able to pinch hit as a mid. (did it in the Coates U18's with success)?  1cm taller than Curnow in his draft year.  Caddy models himself on Curnow. Different style of player to  Fritter, Petty and JVR.

That would be a hint as to our forward woes. We also have Kalani White coming in 2 drafts from this year.  Not sure where he will play.

There a quite a few on here who can't help canning the players, must be the ones who played hundreds of AFL games and naturally starred in them.

Gee, never heard that line on Land before...

On a par with 'if you don't like it, don't read it'

With this Bloke the club would have drafted him to be prime in 2 to 3 years.  At the time of the draft we had picked up Grundy to add to Brown, Tmac, JVR then add in Smith, Petty, Fritsch, Melksham.  He was picked along with Adams to be long term development projects not instant AFL ready players.

How far off is the Roo? IMO has not improved this year

Cannot   mark in a contested group and has a habit of getting where the ball ain't. As a ruckman He is a good forward

Qualifying final was Van Rooyen's worst game for the season. He's spent the season up and down from 'young forward giving a good contest in a difficult situation' to 'young forward being a bit exposed without the support of more mature bodies and experienced targets around him'.

I'm not worried about Van Rooyen's future, at least.

I'm not particularly worried about Jefferson, really - he's played under similarly under-protected and under-supported circumstances at VFL level.

Looking at the spread of the tall forwards taken right at the pointy end of the draft also gives me a comforting reminder that even those top picks, protected by being secondary targets (behind Naughton, Walker, Franklin, etc) progress at very patchy and different speeds.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (1), Aaron Cadman (1), Riley Thilthorpe (2) and Logan McDonald (4), are a pretty random mix of development paths but all look to be coming through and there's not really any reason to write off Jefferson so early.

I am not writing Jefferson off. And it looks like Roo will be suspend for the next game.

Great points. Thilthorpe is a much bigger body than Jeffo and he goes missing for weeks at AFL level. Playing forward is hard, but developing forward is even harder.

I was having a bit of fun that was taken completely the wrong way.  I've copped my whack and on we go!

Seems the way I put my original post is a bit harsh for some of you so i'll re write it.

I don't believe Jefferson will become the long term solution or part of the solution to our forward line. Having watched most of Casey's season I don't think he has the frame to build on or the required grunt. I do however really really hope I'm proved wrong in due course.

Absolutely

It had irony written all over it

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
