Kossie, front and centre is your role, no forward pressure and half hearted efforts at several ground ball contests for a lot of tonight.

Really poor

We definitely needs fresh faces in the midfield this off season…

Why does it feel like kozzy spends 5 minutes on the ground every Qtr?

3 minutes to go and he isn’t roaming around in our forward line when we will 100% quickly boot it in! Man oh man

Maxy Gawn I love ya but Jesus toughen up… I know he gets targeted but just basic footy play where all he needs to do is be strong with his body he’s loose as a goose and falls over..

We need to sort out our clearance game ASAP

I understand the discussion around post-clearance possession being more important than clearances - which, it is - but you can’t lose clearances at the rate we did tonight and expect to win games against the best sides

We won a Premiership with clearance dominance for goodness sake!

We didn't deserve to win. Got ourselves in a position to and got dominated in the last qtr. Some missed calls and free kicks at crucial stages hurt. But we need to be better. A 20 year old developing key forward and shot cumbersome one isn't going to work .

Honestly happy we didn’t steal it.

The quicker we reassess this side and attempt to fix the flaws with lack of run, poor balance around the contest. ordinary forward pressure and way way too much boundary play the better.

2021 isn’t coming back guys. We need to evolve and get better rather than fall back in to bad habits.

Goodwin is cooked, I don’t rate him at all. May’s kick outs are absurd. Our clearance work is ordinary and we crumble under pressure. They should have won by 30 points. Embarrassing.

Clarry not playing good footy.

Too tall and slow.

ANB -  1 min to go running clear into forward line -  and kicks a 20m dart to a 4 man contest -  absolutely no creativity or composure with the ball.

Top 4 gone!!!!!!!!    Why didn’t someone knock Hinkley out the tool.   Umpires cheating bastards.  What a shocking loss.    Ban me from the forum l cannot handle a loss like that.   A compels lack of football guys to loose after coming back how far freo next week.  I hate everyone now [censored]

We don’t have the role of our half forwards right. How many times in that game did we go long to Gawn and they won the ball back at ground level?

It was like watching the Essendon game all over again. At the fall of the ball we repeatedly get beaten. Add that to our clearance issues and we are asking way too much of our back 6.

Poor coaching and poor team selection.
And an even poorer performance from our midfield.

And let’s not mention our leaders. Gawn, Viney, Lever, Gus all missing in action.
If it wasn’t for Petracca going into beast mode, we would have lost by 6+ goals.

Anyone who will blame the umpiring for this loss is simple papering over the very obvious cracks.
You don’t play an insipid and soft first half against a top 4 side on their home ground and win.

Agreed but 5-6 goals from soft frees and blatant frees missed to the away side and 10-2 in a tough last quarter certainly helps.

That kick out to the left is killing us and tonight how many goals did they get from it.

Too many players poor.

Disposal poor.

Played from behind.

Why wasn’t Butters tagged? Junior coaches would have 10 minutes into the game.

Grundy’s accuracy for goal is elite but can someone have a word to him about shushing the crowd after his goal. The rest of the game went downhill after that.

Credit to us for making a game of it after half time, but way more credit to Port and especially Butters.

Easy to get a run on in a quarter when you don't turn up for the other 3.

Tired of hearing about our midfield, rack up the numbers but can apply pressure for 4 quarters. Wonder if it has to do with our terrible fitness coach.

Ease up buddy. That's the first last quarter we didn't win ALL SEASON! Selwyn ain't the problem.

Very disappointing to lose a tight game against a fellow contender. I'm not sure we can afford to keep losing clearances and have players like Noah Anderson and Zak Butters playing like prime Leigh Matthews. They're great players sure, but come on. They ain't that good.

Feel like we need dry weather at the MCG to play our best footy. That's not necessarily a bad thing (and polar opposite to prior seasons) but I just don't like the look of us when conditions don't suit. Love Steven May but it's about time he didn't kick to the exact same spot after a behind. Every time. That must be a contributor to 11 zip inside 50s to start the last and basically the game right there.

Maybe I'm bitter but I can't [censored] stand Port Adelaide. Hope they find a way to capitulate.

Two Port goals after the siren to dodgy frees and you just felt like it was going to be that kind of night, and it was.

We rectified the clearance differential in Q3 and it made all the difference, particularly because if we lost the centre clearance and they got it in their forward 50 we couldn't for the life of us get it out.  We managed to rectify clearances largely because Petracca spent more time in the middle.

Bit of 2022 about us again this year. Beat up the poor sides and with our 2021 premiership we maintain a healthy reputation but we just can’t beat the better sides.

Out-coached tonight just like Scott did to us in round 5. If you go in with a plan against Melbourne, you usually win.

Can't play one good quarter.

Got shown up by butters

Those dumb free kicks we gave away that cost us goals.

Van Rooyen has to learn how to tackle properly

Kozzie missing in the final term

Our pathetic first half

Gawn not 1 mark

We still haven't beaten anyone

Please stop blaming the umpires - they didn't beat us we beat ourselves. We got as many dodgy frees as Port did.

I don't understand the 'Goodwin is a [censored] coach vibe' when it is the players' intensity and skills that let us down.

I don't understand why we don't play a tagger.

JVR & Viney made some critical errors in the last quarter that were so costly.

There is something off with our midfield.

He might be but there's not much better coaching talent out there atm. Our midfield performance might be costing Yze his coaching credentials.

Only got ourselves to blame - can’t play 1 quarter and expect to win. JVRs poor discipline needs to be addressed. I think McVee may also need a spell. Nibbler also had a mare. Max has hardly taken a mark for 2 weeks.

Currently we don’t have that ability. At this stage we’re simply not going to challenge.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
