Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Agree. It was a long season for Salem after his thyroid issue followed by a knew complaint. His first 3 or 4 games after retruning were excellent.
He was close to BOG for us v PA in the wet (IMO) and very good KB v Pies. He was clearly running on empty late in the season.

I also agree with the other poster re: trying him forward. He has a low centre of gravity and uses his body well for his size and was once a one grab player.

Tend to agree the idea of Kozzie playing for long periods of a game in the midfield is a bit silly. I think people get confused between having a good tank and being able to cover the ground with some gut running. I go to every game in Melbourne and watched Koz closely this year. After repeat contests the guy is completely spent at times with hands on knees sucking it in. And this is fine because he's predominantly a forward and is coached and set up to perform in short bursts. Which is why he's good in the midfield to impact.... in short bursts.

Myself others like the idea of either Salem or Bowey playing more forward half this year but more in the high HF role that ANB and Spargo play. We're just desperate for better ball use in that area of the ground and I think you need your most accurate damaging kicks in that area. Our backline have enough cover to keep decent disposal efficiency if one of those two were to move further up the ground.

Agree re: Bowey for high HF, worth a shot.

Not sure that Salem has the pace or gut run for that role personally. I think for him to work it would need to be closer to a Melk/Jamie Elliot role. Remain inside 50, seek one on ones, create some space for others and relay on one touch gathers/disposals.

Refuse? Refuse who?  You?

You seem to paint anyone who sees things in more positive light than you in such black and whiter terms. And paint yourself as clear eyed and able to see what noobs such as myself are too blindly loyal to see. As if i do nothing but praise the club and refuse to see or acknowledge any weaknesses.

(by the by, i don't think other clubs 'copied our game plan' and have never said they have. I HAVE said on many occasions that we copied the Tigers game plan and that the model developed by Hardwick is the template for the way the game is now played).

C'mon Jimmy such reductive, black and white nonsense is so puerile. It is why i don't bother engaging in any meaningful discussion with you any more.

You don't seem to be interested in genuine discussion. You seem to prefer baiting, being obtuse and unnecessarily contrarian. It's tiresome. But each to their own i guess.

But i'll bite this time.

So, to your point about me 'refusing' to 'list what Goodwin should be doing about that from a list point of view'.

For one thing, if you had been paying attention, i have banging on about our poor kicking skills ever since i started posting on DL 13 years ago.

And more recently i have addressed what i see as our key list needs on multiple occasions.

For example, for your reading pleasure please see these three recent examples (let me know if you want some more):

Thanks for your response.

I clearly missed those posts.

Essendons D'Ambrosio is apparently considered a delisted free agent under rookie rules and can move to Hawthorn via that mechanism.

Essendon have been playing hardball with him to get a better pick and its been reported that they may not have been aware of this rule and the fact he can walk for nothing.

How does this happen:

"The deals today mean Port Adelaide currently has ZERO picks left in the first five rounds of this year's draft....They have also traded out their future first and future fourth-round picks, meaning they currently hold just two picks for the 2024 draft."

Hard to believe the AFL allowed that to happen.  It breaches the drafting and the future pick trading rules.

They probably want a F4 pick from Ess for Duursma but Dodoro seems determined to not hand any over.  But the AFL may force them to hand over a F4 to enable Port to meet the future trading rules.

They will be in a power of hurt (excuse the pun) for a few years in trading and drafting.  Looks like an all out tilt at a flag next year.  Irony is they haven't traded in any real talent....talk about mortgaging the future.

Assume that means they have a couple of picks at the end of the draft, if they have the spots.

True.

They have traded out their round 5 pick.  Not sure how many rounds there are.  6 maybe?  That pick will come into 60 something but they still seem to have breached the rules this year and next.

Not sure they’ve breached any rules. Future 4th rounders can be traded now even if you trade your future first, so they’re fine on that. They can also promote from the rookie list and take picks at the end of the draft so they’ll have their 3 mandatory list changes

From 2018-2021 drafts they have:

Butters, Rozee, Dyl Williams, Georgiades, Bergman, Lord, Jones, Sinn and JHF.

Thats a great haul and worth trading out of late firsts to fix deficiencies.

The big question will be whether Esava and BZT will fix their issues or if they should’ve gone for a bigger fish down back.

Thanks, forgot about the F4 rule.

Do they have enough late round 6 and 7 picks to upgrade rookies?

It is your last line that I was doubting the value of this years trading.

Elijah Hollands is a huge steal for Carlton. Wished we pushed harder with this one.

I’m weary of the 2020 draft, he’s looked ordinary and is likely stupidly overpaid as most of the Suns are, but geez, a future 3rd and a 2 pick downgrade that will be cancelled out by matched bids, that’s a theft.

Don’t need a pick for rookie upgrade, they just happen. And pretty sure the draft has no limit either, you can trade out of your 4, 5th rounders and then you get 6, 7, 8 to make up the list spots.

Richmond did very well to get Freo’s future 2nd for Soldo too. He’s worth a second, rucks are valuable. But that’s better than Grundy and he isn’t.

If we can go into the draft with pick 6, 11, McAdam, Fullarton, Billings and a backup ruck like Lycett we’ll have done incredibly well.
Billings as wing depth, two potential ruck options should Gawny get sore or need a rest and some x-factor for the forwardline. That ticks all our boxes.
Not to mention some potential gun mids or a move for one exceptional talent. Go Dees!

If Billings had a good preseason, I’m not convinced he’d be wing depth. Good rocket for Lingers and Hunter

Koschitzke just went to the tigers for 49.

Did we show any interest in him? That’s so cheap for someone like that, which might have been useful.

I really don’t rate him. I watched a lot of the Hawks this year, both at VFL and AFL level Koschitzke is just that little bit off. NQR. I don’t think we’ve missed out there.

Mitchell Lewis on the other hand is a dead set gun…

There are infinite picks and rounds depending on how many list spots a team has to fill

This is why there’s no point haggling and holding clubs to ransom and crying over every small trade.
If we pissfart around on the Grundy trade how many other trades would we have struggled to complete?

Every year we move deals quickly and end up completing more deals than just about any other club.
Geelong made no trades because all week they fought Port only to end up with two picks they’ll never use anyway. No logic.

Yeah but it’s Geelong, so I’m happy they chose this tact to waste virtually all of their trade period.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
