Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

No doubt he's struggled over the past 24 months, but his performance against Carlton is where it needs to be. Still only 23.

Charlie would be in my side.

He was okay. Had some moments. Still didn’t trouble the scorer.

Forwards must kick goals. It comes with the job description.

He's a battler. Burst onto the scene 4-5 years ago with great run and found a bit of ball. His ball use has always ben suspect though, and he's been pushed out of the midfield rotation by superior players. He'll likely find a home somewhere else in future, but he's a battler and wouldn't get a game for us.

His younger brother in the draft this year on the other hand... he's got potential.

Younger brother most definitely does have potential. I spoke to a bloke the other day who said he’s the best junior he’s seen play.

Averages 10 touches and 0.6 goals a game across his seven year career to date. Hasn’t measurably improved over the past 24 months.

Do you honestly think that’s good enough from a small forward? That’s the bar you’re going to set?

Settle petal l think when he’s playing well he’s an important part of the forward line, Toby Bedford last season Spargo next season, Chandler after that then Kozzie?

Grundy was a mistake but only for one year. Sydney will now take that contract over. We gambled on Gawndy, it didn’t work, okay we move on. Not the end of the world.

Spargo wouldn’t be either if he left. He’s not Tom Papley. Uses the ball well but doesn’t get enough of it and doesn’t kick enough goals for a small forward.

Not sure why you’re potting the Richmond model. It won three flags.

Where did I pot the Richmond model?

We have literally followed most of what they did - right down to Track mirroring Dusty's rise statistically before breaking through (hasn't reached quite the same heights). That includes the break through flag, and now in the years that follow, losing small forwards and depth players who've gone on to better things.

The difference is that they went and got Lynch, while we got 1) no one for 2022, and 2) Grundy for 2023.

I'm well aware there weren't many terrific key forwards on the market and certainly none of the calibre of Lynch. But you'd think one would have been available with the kind of money we spent on Grundy.

Don't all be so sensitive. Call it what you want - a mistake, an experiment, whatever. We played a hand and it didn't work. Richmond made a similar choice with Lynch and it went a long way towards flags 2 and 3. Ask any Richmond fan and they'll tell you how important it was.

Well he wasn’t Robinson Crusoe in that regard for much of this year.

You do appear to have a bit of a hard-on for him though it seems.

Being an 'important' part of a C grade forward line isn't much to get excited about.

I prefer Charlie over Chandler who goes missing. Incidentally he was running into an open goal 30m out on a 45 degree angle and missed a very gettable goal

Prefer neither. Need upgrades on both.

Does that excuse him? I wouldn't lose any sleep if we move him on.

No hate from me. Just want forwards who hit the scoreboard. A goal every other game doesn't cut it.

Grundy wasn't si much a mistake...though i can only agree an argument can be made ( a la rpfc ) that we never should have entertained it...better other options/deals.

But , imo, where we truly [censored] up was not reappraising where we were and the talent on offer and rethinking how to use.

Exhibit A .. the last game ..

We needto be far more astute and inventive.

So when Gawn went down, who would have played Ruck through that period?

Spargo might himself request a fresh start

Possibly the most logical thought regarding him.

He has his moments...has his fades ( not alone ) Definitely among the elite thinkers with the ball. His vision is exemplary.  Doesn't always get the desired result.

He might find selection getting even more crowded at Melb.  So he might well pull the trigger.

Gryan Miers is the guy he needs to try to emulate next year.

Miers is 24, and statistically very similar.

Spargo a better user, but Miers had more score assists (best ever in fact) and score involvements.

Charlie needs to get his score involvements and assists up. Then he and Trac rolling through there with more dangerous ground level players like McAdam and hopefully a Watson to go with Kozzy, with Fritta's goal sense and Petty's contested marking, that's a dangerous forwardline that allows JVR to grow too.

Miers also also kicking it to more consistent forwards.  Wonder what Spargo stats would have been like if we had a well oiled forward line.

Yep, time to invest a bit more in the forward half for our list.

Miers has a few better ball users getting the ball to him.

Spargo would get a lot more footy if he was used more, he is often free but we can’t/won’t pull the trigger to get it to him

Miers and Spargo are not statistically similar. The former averaged 18 touches a game over the past two seasons, the latter 11. That’s a big difference. Miers also lays more tackles and takes more marks.

Spargo is a “better ball user” yet has less score assists or score involvements? Hmmm 🤔

Seven years in the system and his numbers aren’t improving. With the FD set to re-model our inept forward line and bring in reinforcements, Charlie is going to be up against it. Both him and Chandler frankly.

The addition of Wizard Watson (in addition to McAdam), if it happens, would likely signal the death knell for both of them.

Miers still superior statistically in flag years, even though it wasn’t his best season.

Look at the past 24 months. Miers has surged, Spargo stagnated/regressed. Not a good sign for a 6th/7th year player.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
