Now that trade month is dusted and we need to wait us a few more weeks for some further hope cookies, I thought it might be the opportune time to start a new thread on something that has occupied my mind for the past six or so minutes. Usernames.

Q1: have you misinterpreted other posters' usernames without reflection?

(Follow up Q2: where and why and what and who did you derive your username from?)

I’ll get the ball gently rolling. (First easy question though: do any of the many ‘Dr.s’ on Demonland hold a PhD. or practice medicine?)

More specifically, on reflection.

Nasher: always thought it was something to do with being an admin and gnashing teeth, but probably just someone having the surname Nash.

Cassiew: read it as someone who considers themselves a nut, as in cashew. But likewise probably just a person named Cassandra, whose surname starts with ‘w’.

Pennant St Dee: always read in my head as Pennant ‘Saint’ Dee. Pretty obviously refers to a street though, somewhere in Perth likely. Google says such a thing exists.

mo64: A dude named Moe or referring to modus operandi 1964’?

DubDee/Sydee/Edm. Is it music related? Always picture you all in the different rooms of a rave.

binman: still can’t help but connect with the strident support of Oscar McDonald, as in Oscar the Grouch = bin-man. Name probably came about well before OMac ever walked into our club.

Demonstone? Is this Demon-stone like something out of Game of Thrones, or Demon’s tone where he or she forgot the apostrophe?

DeeSpencer: just assume is a huge fan of Jake Spencer like me.

I know where @WalkingCivilWar gets her username from. Pretty obscure and Google probably won't help unless you know what you're looking for in the first place.

I figured @DubDee with the Jim Stynes photo was a reference to Dublin.

@Skuit I think historically you have defined your name for someone who once asked? Skirt/Suit?

@A F - my head goes to . something "as [censored]."

Not sure of @WalkingCivilWarobscure reference... my head either goes to Guns N Roses song 'Civil Wa'r or Manic Street Preachers lyrics of "Divine Youth" - And I sing to myself, My civil wars within, The victories and failures, I daily lose and win..."

@binman - I just imagine he is a hipster with a beard... but in reality is clean shaven.

@WERRIDEE is stuck in Werribee.,,

I do like how people really really try really really hard to wedge in a Demons reference into their handle...

Really want to know the origin of yours, @Engorged Onion…...aroused cooking or something springs to mind! Mine I’m sad to say is my surname, just seemed appropriate to the internet. Boring.

Demons3031 Childhood memories for me going to the footy with Dad in the old Bay 13 and Dad telling me all about John Beckwith (Captain) and Ron  Barassi (Vice captain) - and seeing them both as heroes. I remember him once telling me to watch Beckwith kick the ball along the boundary line from the back pocket. but not be pinged for on the full - he was spot on. :)

spelling

@Salems Lot - what's yours a reference to?

@Webber - I do think of bbq's and cooking!!

Indeed - I do like my cooking. Not a naked chef though, but good food access the heart and souls of people. And when I was younger led to romantic encounters!

It is probably a bit of my latent cheeky side - most peoples head goes to a certain place when they hear the word 'engorged'...

The onion bit is a work reference... to peeling back the layers of the individual to appreciate their 'core'.

Interesting! I thought your name might have been a reference to BBQ onions from Gus and Gawny, @Engorged Onion

@Skuit always makes me think of Scoot... and what's the reason for yours, @Dee Zephyr? Going back to Windy Hill or something?

@Sydee is like Sydney Dee... but I might have made this up!

Mine simply refers to the kind of play I hope to see our players perform in every game 😊

Bonus content!

My username is simply a combination of two of my greatest loves - The Rolling Stones (hence the Keith Richards avatar) and Melbourne Football Club.

I've always assumed that @mo64 refers to the poster's initials and year of birth.

Mine came about from horse racing DP. A mate’s horse was named Dan Zephyr and had a long run without success like the Dees, a few of us on here like to talk racing every now and then and it was one of them that suggested the name. Sounded apt at the time.

Neither of those, EO.

Lyrics from a band called Mercury Rev (their name belies their music; they produce the sweetest songs not unlike The Flaming Lips). Also because I have a problem with indecision and oftentimes feel like it’s me fighting me,  hence civil war. 😁

Yep that’s right. Nothing too imaginative, just a dubliner. Like me auld mates WCW and Pennant St Dee 🙂

8-year-old me laughs at @titan_uranus 🤭

Current-day me laughs at @wobbleguts😂

My fave avi belong to the poster formerly known as The Jackson Six, now known as @The Jackson FIXcoz funny af pic.  Also @deanoxcoz love lil Alex. And @Return to Glorycoz love Alan Partridge.

Big LOLZ that @Skuithas folks believing his name is a portmanteau of skirt/suit. Who on god’s green earth would love a hybrid garment of clothing enough to adopt it as a username??? And even then, you’d go skorts, surely!

@deanox- deano-x or dean-ox?

@Clint Bizkitis still my favourite culture merger. There’d be a whole generation of Demonlanders who have no idea what either references are now. We’re getting old!

My surname isn’t Nash. Nasher was out of a game I used to play 25 years ago, and when I was an online gamer in my youth I started using it as an alias to my normal name when I wanted some anonymity, and for a brief period in the early 00s it became the alias I used everywhere. It has no relevance at all in my life now and this is the only presence where I still use it.

End life story.

Just a Dubliner?!
Proud to be a Dubliner! !!
 While I’m an Aussie through and through, my heart will forever belong to my birthplace, Coolock. Also Jimmy’s neck of the woods. ❤️💙

I get both references. But this username reminds me of this…

The exact opposite, Loges. A pacifist til the end. In fact I was gonna change my username on February 24th this year, the day Russia invaded Ukraine. I didn’t like having the word “war” in my name. 😢

I am an avid reader but not much of a contributer so stuck with this msg, only 67 more to go now:

You are not allowed to change your display name right now as only members who have submitted 100 content items, etc. can change their username - you need to make 68 more.

Nice pick up

@Skuit I think historically you have defined your name for someone who once asked? Skirt/Suit?

It's a multiple-choice question

@A F - my head goes to . something "as [censored]."

Solved

Not sure of @WalkingCivilWarobscure reference... my head either goes to Guns N Roses song 'Civil Wa'r or Manic Street Preachers lyrics of "Divine Youth" - And I sing to myself, My civil wars within, The victories and failures, I daily lose and win..."

Badge for effort

We'll be patient if you just want to quickly churn out six dozen nonsense texts in order to change your handle. They would probably be as insightful as the rest of ours. .

It's possibly true of many, if not most, here, but it's particularly true in this case: you are a rich tapestry, @WalkingCivilWar 😊

  • REPORT: Carlton

    I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

    The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

    A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
