Went to Victoria Park once in the 80's.
Real eye opener for a kid raised at the MCG and VFL Park.
Watched the Pies overrun our 27pt 3qtr time lead in the last.
Daicos kicking a couple including a trade mark from the boundary.
Holy sheet, I thought the Zulus were comin'.

Also went to Windy Hill around the same time.
The game Jacko punched on with Andrews and threw the can into the crowd.
That was pretty wild too 😂

I was at that game at Windy Hill too Forky. Unfortunately it was down the other end of the ground that it all kicked off. Jacko was about the only entertainment we had as Dees fans back then.

Remember that game well. Went with an Essendon supporter and was one of the rare times I got smashed at the footy.

Not sure if this fits the title of humble but, here's my take anyway,

I went to Windy Hill. It was 1990. My "Essendon friend" invited me to the Essendon-Melbourne match, and having a hunch that the Dees were a chance to knock off the top-of-the-ladder Bombers on their home turf, I accepted the invitation. Little did I know what was about to transpire...

We arrived at the ground and walked to the standing room area in the the outer on the wing. I looked around and became aware that I was surrounded by Essendon supporters. I had expected this, and steeled myself for the contest.

The game began and for the first 3 quarters, Essendon were in control. At 3/4 time, Darren Bennett had only kicked one goal.

With 15 minutes to go in the last quarter, the score was Essendon 104, Melbourne 70. I had remained resolute and refused to admit defeat. I had been receiving sledges all afternoon from the surrounding Essendon supporters - including my "Essendon friend".

However, the final 15 minutes of the 4th quarter were something to behold. Ricky Jackson was on fire and he would finish the game with 4 goals. Strawbs O'Dwyer, Steven Stretch, Brett Lovett, Todd Viney, Garry Lyon, Jimmy Stynes, Graeme Yeats, Danny Hughes, Earl Spalding, and Sugar Healy all pulled the stops out. Melbourne's pressure was immense! But Darren Bennett was absolutely possessed! He booted 4 in the last quarter and was the match winner. At the 15 minute mark I yelled "There's still time - GO DEES!". Raucous laughter ensued from the surrounding Bomber supporters. With each ensuing Demon goal I repeated GO DEES! - there's still time! When we eventually hit the front, I was shaking, and there was a beautiful silence around me. This repeated with an even more perfect silence with yet ANOTHER Melbourne goal. 

When the siren went, I couldn't believe what I had just witnessed. I was elated. I walked with my "Essendon friend" from the outer down the steps to exit the ground.

BANG!

I was king hit in the back of my head! Fully lost my balance and only just regathered it near the bottom of the steps. I turned around and yelled who did that? Nobody owned up.

I invited my "Essendon friend" to the pub to watch the replay but he declined. I went and enjoyed watching a memorable Demon victory at a local Essendon pub. Afterwards, I made it home safely on public transport.

I never spoke with my "Essendon friend" again. Make of this story what you wish.

Windy Hill was the pitts in terms of facilities and viewing the game from what i recall.  I used to have to stand on empty beer cans to see the game properly.

I do recall getting in for free at one match though as there was a hole/gap under the wire fence.

The toughest ground from my experience was Waverley Park.  Most fights i witnessed were out there for some reason.  From memory mostly Hawk supporters.  Arrogant bunch of....

I'm not for one second suggesting you're old, but was this the time when beer cans were steel and much stronger so you could make a platform to stand on out of them? 

My dad was at the 66 grand final and all I ever heard about that game was how he did this 😄

Sounds right, South Australia as a 10y.o. Vic for the State of Origin truly scared me though. Really felt like i would be punched by an adult.

But in Vic, Essendon fans are the worst though, I respect those who give respect, so I am tolerant of some Bombers fans, but unlike everyone else i meet in life, Bombers fans start with a negative assessment. I do quite like 
Herbatron though, for an Essendon supporter he gives hours of enjoyment, here is his greatest work…

 

Richmond supporters definitely take the cake. The last two years I have been flat out abused by sore losing Tigers supporters. Simply cannot handle losing. Like they just hurl insults at you. And not even prompted. I remember one bogan looking at me while they were walking out and saying, "You're not even that good." Like wtf kind of comment is that? Eagles supporters are horrid. Similar levels of just inability to accept a loss. And when they win, they jeer and ridicule. I have absolutely zero sympathy for that club atm. I hope they end up with the worst percentage ever.

All that said, Melbourne's support base is pretty tame. There's definitely your loud and passionate diehards but holistically we are a tame bunch. And it stands out more now that we are winning. We sit and watch and enjoy. We don't really seem to "barrack". I think it was Gerard Wheatley who made the comment that watching Melbourne was like viewing art in a museum whereas Carlton was like a rock band. I think that pretty much sums up both how the clubs play but also how their support bases carry themselves.

Great OP. I despise Essendon and carried on like absolute pork chop when we beat them. But in general it's good to be good winners and gracious losers on the rare occasion that happens.

Same for me. The one and only time I was in that stand was the Nicky Windmar game and as St Kilda left the ground you could not see the race they were walking to from "Filth" supporters spitting on them. VERY embarrassed to say one of them was a friend. I chose to lose contact with them after that.

I think I speak for most Dees supporters when we all simply want to go the football and enjoy watching the best Melbourne side of our generation.

I have nothing but positive feedback from mates, family and other supporters seeing our club being successful and im going to enjoy the ride. If that's perceived as not being humble then that's there problem.

And if anyone has a problem with us enjoying the plight of Essendon or West Coast then they have not been Dees supporters long enough.

If anything, it if the supporters of other clubs that lead to me "hating" the club they follow.

I was almost murdered by Collingwood supporters after I dared to shout out ‘Tarquin, get a real name’ , in response to one of their players by that name  getting the ball😳, but I hate Carlton supporters… just because they’re Carlton supporters 

I had no choice but to be humble for 57 years....so nah....

That said though I barrack for the MFC and not against the opposition...

Though after our loss last week I did say 'That wasn't melbourne out there in the 2nd half'

Reminds me of the time I went to the World Cup semi final to watch the Wallabies against Scotland in 2015, and Bernard Foley kicked a penalty to win with about 30 seconds left. As I went berserk my mate had to drag me back into my seat and remind me that 1000 angry Scots supporters were staring at me, and he would prefer we reach the exits alive.

That was awesome too
