Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Petracca’s goalkicking

Recommended Posts

A big part of our inaccuracy is due to the fwds leading tight in to the pockets and the inside 50s getting directed in that way. We are one of the poorest sides in the top 8 as far as fwd leading movement , entries and execution

as I said in another thread - the media is always last to notice a change in trend /narrative. We are a fair way behind where people think we are and the next 6 weeks is going to reveal that.

I'm surprised to see a negative thread when we are in our most successful streak for two generations.  We are winning by 3-8 goals each week.

On scoring, the whole team has a very poor G:B ratio.  Would Petracca's or anyone else's scoring accuracy make much difference to 10.0 season and a 161%?

No player is perfect so not sure why folks are nit picking one of our very best, week in week out, even when playing injured.

And look at the big picture.  His contribution to TEAM scoring this year:

Source:  Footy wire.

The coaches have shown what they value:  last week he kicked 2.4 but received 9 coaches votes!  He will be in the votes again this week.

I sat on a presentation with Goody and Trac before rd 1 and Goody mentioned that Trac had mentioned to him that he was worried about his goal kicking.   So it seems they are aware of it and I dare they say they have been working on it but his confidence is shot when it comes to set shots.   His field kicking is still elite!

It's been part of our game plan and success for the past 18 months. If forwards lead straight up the middle, it's more difficult to defend if there's a turnover.

Our game plan is built around defence first. If we hold our structures and win contested possession, we give ourselves enough chances to score, whilst limiting the opposition.

IIRC his goal kicking stank in 2019 or 2020 or both as well. I attributed the drastic improvement mainly to Choco. Not sure what's happened this time around but he's gone backwards at a rate of knots. It might be the knee issue but hopefully he'll get on top of it by finals.

The issue is in his head, not knee. On the club's Instagram, they show a clip of Trac in the warm up drilling a set shot from the same position where fluffed the around the corner kick. In the warmup though he kicked a regular drop punt.

No doubt it is above the shoulders. He has to sort out a routine that works

I don't think this is a 'negative thread'.    Simply imagine how much more of a weapon he'd be if he improved his goal kicking.

If we are going to be objective, there is a problem. Has kicked 9-16 this year. Two things stand out. The ball drop appears too high and he tends to lean back too much.

The good news is these things can be fixed and he does look much better when he consciously has a low ball drop.

It’s a mental thing. One day he will kick 3 straight in a game and he won’t miss again for the rest of the season. He is in his own head. His reaction to missing simple shots is one of utter devastation.

This is why he should never ever be played in the forward line. One of the worst kicks for goal in the league. comfortably.

So he is not allowed inside our 50m zone and has  to handpass and not go for goals ever?

Good luck with that "never play in the forward line " ideology. He is going through a patch without any confidence and still is better on the run or snapping than a set shot. Agree with another poster here  that he will recover his good kicking all of a sudden and delight is with his skill.

Who is going to keep him out of the forward line? Will never happen.

As for his kicking, it appears to be a function of the ball drop and the desire to kick the ball out of the ground. Tracca's great skill is to use his positioning and strength to get the ball, evade tackles and deliver the ball to advantage. In time, his fine touch ball handling will catch up and he will be a more complete player.

For those in this thread complaining about Petracca's goal kicking you might like to note he received votes from both coaches again this week: 6 votes in total.  He is now 3rd on the Leader Board.

He still is a shizen kick for goal though and we are  likely going to need to kick straight over the next month or so.

He is a flawed footballer who should be dropped to Casey. I’m sick of his [censored]. 3rd! Pfft rubbish.

I agree with the general premise of your post. I tend to view this and other issues (e.g. our low inside 50 retention rate) as positives - room for improvement despite us being 10-0 and 161%.

On the bolded bit, Petracca really does stand out for inaccuracy, but as you say, he's not on his own.

This is a list of all of our players who have kicked more behinds than goals, ranked by accuracy:

  1. Oliver: 1.5 (16.6%)
  2. ANB: 2.7 (22.2%)
  3. Sparrow: 2.4 (33.3%)
  4. Melksham: 1.2 (33.3%)
  5. Petracca: 9.17 (34.6%)
  6. Spargo: 5.7 (41.6%)

Melksham's only played two games so taking him out and focusing on the best 22, Petracca's only our 4th worst shot on goal so far this year.

But obviously his volume of shots makes him stand out above everyone else.

Sparrow's accuracy looks a lot worse when you include the six shots at goal which haven't registered a score. Here are all Melbourne's players to have taken at least five shots this year, noting of course that raw accuracy doesn't take into account where players take their shots from nor the pressure they are under when they take the kick. This is where Champion Data's expected score can be useful but they don't make the data available for individual players.

Here are the least accurate players in the AFL this year who have taken at least ten shots.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
