Did McDonald have a brain fade with the marking of Harmes kick?

Either that or it was extremely selfish.

I reckon the former ... the only reason i can think of is he wasn't 110% sure it was the big sticks it was going through.... in the end only plugger knows why though eh.  He was lucky it wasn't given a point.  I reckon he only just managed to control that before the ball fully crossed the line by a bee's johnson

I was wrong. We really didn't try that hard again. I'm nearly ready for divisional football now. Playing all these schleps is getting boring.

Very happy with the win.
The good:

We are now two games + percentage inside the top three, this is really all that matters. Beat the Saints next week with Eagles and North to follow, we could have finals locked away and be as much as 4 games + percentage inside the top 4.

We have still never been truly challenged, “scrape home” AFL.com? We were never behind in the last quarter, we were never one goal away from being behind, we were only 2 goals away with 1.30 left in the game, that’s not a scrape, Port vs St Kilda is a scrape.

We had 6 of our starting 18 out and we still won, nuff said. Port went 0-5 when confronted with similar outs.

The frustrating:

I get it but I don’t like the rope-a-dope last quarters. It would’ve been far more fun if we simply kicked straight, (particularly Bailey and Jake), we need to ice games, not try to smash teams and leave ourselves vulnerable, but just kick a sealer. A single goal would’ve completely broken the Hawks, see Sydney last week. We let them keep hope, understandable but frustrating.

Our forward line needs to get back to separating and leading, the number of times Brown, Gawn, McDonald and Weideman all jumped into each other, or at least two did was very frustrating. Stop bombing to packs, lead!

Ultimately, a wins a win and the Hawks are pretenders. Mark my words, they will fail this year and then get worse next year, Mitchell, O’Meara, Wingard, Gunston, Shiel and Breust are still their best, they’re all on the way out. Enjoy the pain Hawks, there’s plenty to come! 😈😈😈

I wouldn't be reaching any firm conclusions like Lever needs Petty around him on the basis of one game.

I just think Lever was a tad underdone and less certain in reading the flight and the bounce. More fumble.

That will go with match time.

Slightly under done it seems and the interruption last week wouldn't have helped.

Without Petty is he also being asked not to play as high in order to get back deep and assist the others when needed?  This kind of leaves him a little in no man's land on occasions making him appear a bit more "out of sorts".

With Petty back in and another week or two under Lever's belt hopefully he'll get back to somewhere near his best intercept / spoiling form from here.

Reckon solving the second part will hopefully solve the first Deej.

I'm with you on the highlighted part.  I just don't see enough of the talls leading at the moment.  They're mostly (not always but mostly.. BB probably the least guilty here playing quite high at times and working back hard to the goal square) hanging around that 30 meter hot zone calling for players coming off the square to kick it long.

Get on your bikes big boys and present!  Even if the lead / hit up fails it clears out space for others to work in like Fritta, Kozzie, Toby and even Tracc on occasions (when pushing forward).

Guys I don't like to be a negative Nelly but I thought today was horrendous. :( Can someone lift my spirits!?

Things that I saw:

- A complete inability to defend the switch kick or outlet kick.
- Inability to have an answer for Dylan Moore who absolutely tore us up.
- Brayshaw having way too much confidence kicking on his left foot. Kicked it on the full twice.
- Inability to make good decisions going forward. Time and time and time and time again.
- No game sense. Giving away dumb frees. But also going inside 50m. A stoppage going inside 50m is a massive win when the game is close. Instead guys like Fritsch, Spargo and half the team turned it directly over to hawthorn. Almost cost us the game. Dunstan was just about the only guy the went inside 50m with any sense of game smarts. Straight to the hot spot.
- A complete lack of defensive pressure.

We can’t be fully on every week, and we did have 8 out due to the bug including our champion coach. I think in the circumstances the club did well. Personally I’d take 7-0 this time of the year. Don’t you remember the past?

Were doing enough to win games without really being in form which is a good sign. We have been lucky to have the easiest of draws St.Kilda should be a bigger test looking forward to it.

That’s the first game I’ve missed for years. This Airbnb in Corsica has no wifi! Luckily I had enough mobile data to check the scores occasionally. Later in the day I found a restaurant with wifi so I managed to see the highlights. But for some strange reason our game was the only one Watchafl.com didn’t provide a download for. Now, hours later a download still isn’t available. I’m a big fan of watchafl.com, but this is inexcusable.
Anyway, a win under the Covid circumstances is most welcome!

How’s Corsica? High on my todo list along with Sardinia. Perhaps when we park up in Nice next time post Carcasonne, Cadaques, Mont Ventoux (my spiritual home in France).

Can't complain with another win this time of the year. If we're playing like this three rounds out of finals against bottom sides it will be less than ideal.

Can complain about the crowd. 29,000?!

Pathetic from us! Carlton and Hawthorn had almost 70,000 there a couple weeks ago.

Can confirm that the Hawks supporters in the standing areas of the Southern Stand are still a bunch of arrogant knobs. Yet they were fairly quiet towards the end.

Totally obnoxious. The Hawthorn fans seated around me were fine but those flogs in the standing area were hard to listen to

FMD what is going on with our forward line? Leading patterns are non existent, Brown and Weed both going up for marks hoping to clunk one. I sat down the Punt Road end, and watched numerous time Brown and Weed just standing there waiting for something to happen instead of making something happen, frustrates the crap out of me.  I honestly see better forward line movement at local footy. We could be so much better.

And what is with the kick ins after the opposition scores a behind? Our plan seems to be kick it to a pack and hope for the best, time and time again. Do the coaches just think we'll back our team against the opposition instead of coming up with a plan??

Mate, kicking it to Gawn between the square and the boundary line is the plan. And you might have worked out, it’s working

I think it was also TMac who had a shot from about 45 out from the Warne Stand side to the city end when he had two players screaming for it on their own about 20 out directly in front. Terribly selfish and he missed the shot.

That was the point in the game which solved the TMac v Weed debate. Shockingly selfish

Don’t forget the 6 day break.

Hawks only had 5. They ran the game out much better considering that. We looked cooked, a bit crook even. Still, did the job despite some ugly ball use in the last going inside 50.

I think today was the worst game I’ve seen Oliver play. He had heaps of ball, but most possessions were garbage. Fumbled. Missed targets. Went back into traffic.

my other gripe, is it just me or is Tracc a terrible tackler. For a big bloke, he struggleS to stick tackles.

Clarry was cheated against by the unfair tag after the first quarter. I say cheat and unfair given that he was denied a fair run at the ball. When a tag puts his back to the ball and faces an opponent with no intent other than to stop a fair run, I call it cheating. More often than not this occured and also the propensity to grapple, hold was clear to me. The AFL should review this tactic and outlaw it immediately! I thought Clarry made some errors BUT he was still intrumental in setting up some overlap, run and carry to easily be in our best

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
