I can only remember when Stephen King decided to have a leg swipe in a ruck contest against Jeff White.  Result?  Jeff White has metal plates put in his face.  Tom Hawkins throws an errant elbow and breaks Maysie's eye socket.  Last year, Hawkins again pushes Maysie in the back and his hammy goes.

......And now this with Clarrie.  Where is the duty of care?

....

Of course there is duty of care but I can’t see any way possible that Selwood was trying to kick Oliver’s hand.  Surely that’s a bridge to far

Didn't Oliver have 11 contested possessions in the last - with a broken thumb?

Correct. But was Chandler trying to knock out the player he concussed?

Great call. The difference between “careless” and “intentional” is a grey area

When Bomber Thomson was asked about it post match he basically said it was White's fault. I'm still angry about that one.

At no stage did I say Selwood was trying to kick Clarrie's hand.  My point is, if a player is trying to take possession of the ball, a kick in hope clearly has a potential to injure the opposing player.  There is the duty of care right there.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm correct here, but the feeling I get is that you don't like the Geelong Football Club?

Accidents will happen on a footy field, but it wasn’t a case of a player coming in from the opposite direction or being obscured by team mates. Oliver and Selwood were contesting as direct opponents. To hack wildly at the footy when your opponent is going for the ball is bush league. Of course, being Selwood it isn’t even mentioned

I didn't particularly like Cats on 8th Sept 1947..

If an ostensibly legal side bump can become a reportable offense if the recipient falls on his head, then kicking in danger when the ball was not even on the ground, was being contested and caused a serious injury should also be a reportable offense.

AFL wake up!

What might be the reason(s) for Oliver not playing after surgery? Is it (1) bone structure protection to stop further damage? (2) to allow the surgical scar to heal? (3) pain, or, conversely, having to play with a numbed hand which makes it hard to use that hand?

That's ludicrous by Salem to even suggest Melksham to replace Oliver.

Listen to Salem's press conference (not v interesting) but he actually mishears the question. Salem says he doesn't know whether Oliver will miss or not - the journo then asks if he's saying there's a chance Oliver will play. I can't remember the exact wording, but Salem thought he said, who could come in for Oliver, to which Salem replies that there are several midfielders ready like Dunstan, Melksham...

Nek minnit, Dunstan's a shoo-in!

Good to see Turner available.  Wouldn't be surprised to see him back in the team.

I wonder if Howes can force his way in, in the time left of the H&A games.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
