Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I remember a bloke on 'Ology who stated that if we ever did win a flag we'd find the joy of victory short lived and not what we thought it was cracked up to be.

I remember that but it wasn't me who posted it.

I expect I'll get pilloried for saying this, but that's just how I feel.  "Is that all there is, my friends?"

Thankfully I was at home watching on TV for 186. For 148 I was there until the bitter end.

Same same, I’d gone to 148 with some hope (who knows why) and brought along some Kiwi mates hoping to get them on the Dees wagon… needless to say they were not interested in supporting the Dees. Funny thing though they did end up becoming Dees fans and loved the Premiership.

We won a flag, nothing else matters.

Lot of Cats fans in Ballarat. Havent seen one since September, not even a bumper sticker.

The look on Geelong fans face now when Melbourne is mentioned......priceless.

Sorry DS you must have much higher expectations than us mere mortals I have been on a bit of a high since Maxy broke the Cats hearts down at Cardinia Park in Round 23. My football life has changed forever we are no longer the “slum Dogs” we are the best in the business.!!

For those of us who waited every day for 57 years, it is not just all, but it is everything. This time with my family.

Bang! Bang, bang, bang still chokes me up and Max and Goody lifting the cup does it all over again.

This feeling will never go away.

Having started following Melbourne in 1965, I was also a member of the "57 years" club.

A Demons flag was also the last item on my bucket list to be ticked off but the initial euphoria wore off much quicker than it obviously has for many of you.  Maybe I'm just old*, jaded and hard to impress these days.

*  So old that last time I attended an antiques auction, I attracted three bids.

Jealous!!! That sounds like a bloody great trip!!

One thing in our favour is that we are the first flag team in history that has unfinished business - to win one back in Melbourne. And I'm looking forward to watching it happen in the next few years!!

Perhaps it's because you've apparently achieved everything else on your bucket list so it pales in comparison with some of the others.

I'm a bit like demonstone, WCW. I've bathed in the afterglow for long enough. But it was so sweet that I want more. I'm now in that early expectation / excitement phase for that next one.

Bit like sex really.

For mine, that’d be a big bunch of nope right there. I look at it this way: if someone was to say to me now (at a match this year), “Today you’re gonna see your beloved Dees cop a humiliating thrashing to the tune of 186 points at the hands of Essendon (my scenario so I get to choose the opponent 😉), the likes of which will break your heart and leave you mentally scarred for god knows how long… but don’t worry, it guarantees you a flag in 10 years” I’d definitely say NO!
It’s not just that 10 years is such a long time to wait. It’s also because no promise of anything in the future is worth suffering that happen again.

On the subject of hypotheticals, on the morning of the GF my son put this to me: Melbourne win the GF today, or Melbourne lose but you get a million dollars. What would you choose? I said Melbourne winning the flag, because a million dollars may or may not make me happy, whereas Melbourne winning the flag is 100”% guaranteed to make me happy. He said, “the disturbing thing is, I know you mean that” and left the room shaking his head. 😆

That's exactly why I put the question out there WCW, because I reckon this forum would be split right down the middle.

I personally said yes because at the time it would have given me some comfort knowing that it would at least happen in my lifetime. Yeah it was humiliating and traumatising, but I'd already been humiliated and traumatised plenty before 186.

On the million dollars thing, I don't think there's a better way to learn the lesson of money only being money than being handed a million dollars. The only reprieve with that scenario is that we'd be allowed to make the GF again. What if someone said a million dollars for MFC to never win in your lifetime? The guy offering that may not have ear drums left after presenting that offer.

That’s a great question. Having given it some *thought I reckon I’d still knock back the $$$.

I sincerely hope you don’t have to wait another 57 years!

But yeah, I understand that. The length and the intensity of the afterglow differs from person to person.

There was a bloke here about 8 years ago who spat it and vowed to never support the Demons again ... also stated that he was going to support Richmond!

Turns out he got 3 flags but did he?  You just can't switch past a certain age (certainly not as an adult)

I’ll get off my magnanimous, winning high horse for a minute to give my serious thoughts on 186 and other rivalries.

We have only just begun to repay the the supporters and our enemies a huge debt.

We've removed Geelong from finals but we haven’t destroyed them yet.

We need to crush North about 24 times in a row to break even.,

Part of the joy of winning is crushing souls into the dust.

Show me a true champion and I’ll show you a sadist.

In victory revenge and in defeat malice.

It's well known that you can't change clubs. It's like politicians who change parties. They're never quite trusted by the new mob, and definitely not by their old mob. Hollow victories indeed.

No. He got to stand in the corner and watch while the cool kids partied. Lose-lose.

I distinctly remember when Fitzroy beat us by 190 points in 1979 but because we defeated a strong Essendon line up by 7 goals the following week, that game seems to have been forgotten somewhat.  Again, I'm not sure why as 190 points still remains the greatest winning margin in VFL/AFL history

Can't say I have given 186 a lot of thought over the years since it happened but it does serve as a reference point to how low we had sunk back then ... and most of the matches in 2012 & 2013 were just more of the same

Interesting that Jordie Mac picked up 25 possessions in that infamous game though.  A reasonable effort when considering that the Cats seemed to have the ball on a string for most of the day

And the Demon's Graham Gaunt picked up 33 possessions in that 190 point loss all those years ago!  That's admirable!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
