I can’t disagree with all above but just how good is our list with Langdon, Picket, ANB, Brayshaw, Spargo, Rivers, Bowey, Sparrow, Jordon, TMac, Hunt, Hibberd, Harmes & Petty as our second tier players and they all have the potential for further improvement in 2022. !!

I find these type of lists a bit contrary to our modus operandi of last year.

The performance of our so called role players  (Petty, ANB, Spargo, Hibberd, Brayshaw, TMac, Jordon, Sparrow, Viney on occasions, Harmes, Rivers and Sparrow) are the major reason we did what we did.

Stars are important of course but they can only be stars when the cogs in the wheel work for them. Lever can only play roaming backman when Petty is locking down on a dangerous tall. Salem can only play distributor when Rivers and Hibberd keep the opposition crumbers at bay.

The star midfielders need Jordon, Sparrow, Viney, etc to play their roles. Block, shepherd, tackle, etc.

Our supposed top 10 players are only as good their teammates around them allow them to be.

HArd to argue with the list. Petty maybe gets in ahead of Langdon.

I know TMac's form tapered off in the second half of the year but we would have been stuffed if he didn't step up in the absence of BB and the Weid for the first half of these season. Very important contribution from Tom this year

Unlucky: Jackson, Kozzie, Langdon, Gus, Petty, Rivers.

The Oliver and Petracca combo are where everything starts. After that I think our best 3 defenders are vital and it's hard to know which order but May and Salem might be the hardest to cover. May's by far our most reliable stopper and Salem just controls the ball use from the back half.

I wanted to have Gawn and Viney higher. Viney especially come finals. Gawn I've only lowered because Jackson's improvement means we can afford to get less out of Gawn. In fact this year we deliberately didn't use up the big fella too early. 

I wanted to squeeze Jacko in but I snuck ANB up because I think he sets up our defensive effort and work rate. Everyone else kind of goes along from him. It's probably Jacko and Kozzie at 10, 11 but I thought I'd give ANB the nod. 

In terms of the tall forwards it's hard to split Brown, Fritsch, T mc and the impact of Jackson/Gawn. If we go smaller up forward then Jacko and Gawn are promoted more. I went Brown at 8 because I thought he did the trickiest structural job as well as kicking goals. Tommy took an unselfish role up the ground (which suits his game). The rucks kind of floated around. And Fritsch was the main goal kicker but to keep winning against the best backlines next year I think it will take more Ben Brown.

Richmond went 7 years with only one or two changes to their B&F top 10 each year, and many of those changes were injury related.

The moment it became hard to be sure who their best / most important 10 were, they were winning premierships.

We've got several players who could be considered in our bottom six but also have an argument made that they are in our most important ten. 

It's freak'n magnificent. Not a useless body on the field.

Alittle bit hard to answer at the momment but I would definetly have both Langdon and Brayshaw in it. People here do not appreciate Brayshaw enough. You saw his value in the grand final.

Reckon Brayshaw's baseline performances should be what we saw in the finals series. I rate him highly as a player but he did have a few average games during the year.

Personally I'd like to see him get at least a few minutes a quarter in the middle.

This is why a lot of the pondering in this thread is futile. I think the Dogs thought Brayshaw's side/wing was  the lesser of the evils (Langdon) and look how that turned out. The most important 10 are the 10 the ball goes through the most in any given match. Yes, the midfielders will be over represented because they are by nature the group where the ball goes through the most. I can understand  ranking the most important players in tennis. But in the AFL it's the team that makes the whole. Go back to the Grand Final and only watch Kozzie, the fact he didn't kick a goal is immaterial to his contribution. He could very easily be the most important player on the ground come Game 1. Having said all that, if we had a injury /surgery list like 2019 then the 10 most important players would be the ones who are next up.

When I think of importance to the team I think about how we’ve gone about this last year and it’s so much to do with structure and method. That said I put my top three as match importance as well for what they can do that almost no one else can.

7. Fritta

8. Langdon

9. BBB

10. Jackson 

Viney, Nibbler, Spargo, Kozzie, and Brayshaw unlucky not to be in that list as well. Someone also made the point above that what is almost more important are the players that fall into best 18-26 of the club that fill the gaps and keep the pressure on.
