Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I really want Gus and Jackson they are important to us but we  have petracca and Olive whor have basically signed on for life. Viney  and Gawn will stick with us.

If we lose some so be it. We have our champions locked in.

When they get us a few more premierships they won't be compared to Judd, cousin's, Kerr because they aren't taking lemonade with ice blocks to help them out

Niall undersells what Jackson will become and the flexibility he provides. Jackson is already a star ruckman despite not winning many hit outs and he could also become an elite forward and midfielder. He will be unstoppable if his marking keeps improving, particularly if we can manipulate him forward on a smaller defender. There is no reason he couldn’t be Adam Goodes as a midfielder, Grundy as a ruckman and (good) Mitch Clark as a forward.

Is this the article that references?  why-luke-jackson-shouldn-t-be-priority-for-fremantle-and-melbourne

My take of it is that is about each club prioritising Jackson.  ihv, Jackson doesn't fit Freo's list needs as he is a ruckman first but Freo are expecting him to primarily be a forward.  And that Melbourne should make Gus a higher priority than Jackson.

Yes that’s what Niall is saying. But he misses the point that Jackson is a unicorn and he should be a priority for 18 clubs.

Agree, having a ‘needs’ discussion when talking about Jackson is tacitly saying you don’t rate him. He can be so much more expansive than the role he is currently developing in.

Absolute jet.

The hype around Jackson – burnished by excessive praise for his grand final ruck work in the third quarter – is a further sign of a footy culture in which players are often paid or purchased on perceived potential rather than proven performance;

Not really.  He isn't doubting Jackson's value, more where is the best fit for him and at what cost.  And in his view the best fit is West Coast.

I reckon Jackson will be a fabulous player but would he as highly rated as he is now, if he didn't have one of the top 3 mid-fields of this century to partner him?

The real test for him will be when he has to play predominately one position as the main man be it fwd or ruck week in and week out.  We won't know that for a few years.

I think it's a good read. Freo have firmly planted themselves into the window and it doesn't make a lot of sense to splash the cash on potential when their main need is probably a key forward. As Jake says in the article "Jackson is not a key forward that can chop out Darcy in the Ruck occasionally".

Mates of mine reckon it's about money and that Freo can offer more. I don't think Freo is the riches that people think they do to throw at him. As I've mentioned previously on this thread Freo have a bunch of players out of contract either this year or next year whom have been critical to their success this year, also Young and Brayshaw signed long term. I'm sure their offer would be marginally more than ours but it won't be dwarfing it in my opinion.

NIal says:  "Whichever of these three paths Jackson takes, neither of Melbourne nor (especially) Fremantle should be offering the kind of massive contract that has been mooted not accurately, this column has gleaned from well-placed sources – to the 20-year-old West Aussie".

Ie the rumoured offers are overstated.

After promising not to return to this thread until page 50 I think I have safely kept my word, So...

Niall as an interesting perspective but more importantly might pour some cold water on an overheated situation which can only help us.

I think he would be because he mostly wins his own ball. The ability to leap in the ruck, land and immediately take off at full speed to gather the loose ball, tackle or spread is undeniable. He is worth the investment IMO.

And I think the flexibility he provides as a second ruckman is way understated. He will never play just one position because he is able to fill others roles when the players are on the interchange.

It does seem like the money club is West Coast. Sure Freo could back-end a deal but if it's about money for Luke then it would seem not the best offer to take at this stage.

Jackson’s performance v Lions was not hype or potential.  He showed even at 20, what he can bring as a leading ruckman. Except for Viney’s incredible performance,  Jackson was probably next best for the Dees. And he will get better.

We should be more worried about the AFL trying to pinch a couple of our top-liners in the next cuppla years for the new Hobart Start-Up.

PS Does anyone have any good knowledge of the best surf beaches down south?

Jake makes some interesting points but I think he is underselling Jackson now and his potential. Angus is clearly having a great year and a far more proven player and I hope he stays as well but if he does go our list is in a better spot to cover him than if LJ leaves in my opinion and gun talls are harder to find than midfielders / halfbacks.

Exactly - it's not just working with Max, it's working with Tracca, Oliver, Viney, Harmes, Sparrow, Jordon, Langdon, Brayshaw(?) - Freo have a very good midfield too but Fyfe and Mundy won't be around forever either.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
