The conditions from memory for the Sydney game were wet and greasy too but TMac and BBB played really well together.

BBB and TMac are for mine our best forward combination going into the back end of the season.

Hopefully they’ll get a chance against the Giants…

Gassed about Viney - he’s a huge IN and will bring us a lot of energy and leadership on field.

This is very much a ‘horses.for courses’ team …….. a winning team!  I really like it!

With regard to B. Brown, how long is it since he has had a game? I did read somewhere that he was having a mini 6 week pre-season as far as fitness goes. In My opinion, this is a good thing.

Give him a run or two at Casey and we have a chance to look at his form.

Would love to see a fit in form BBB in our forward 50.

Goodwin said the Dees “don’t give anyone guarantees to play”.

“What we will do is pick the best team that is available and the best team that is in form, no matter who the name is,”

I  wholeheartedly support this. Although hampered by the lack of VFL opportunities, B Brown doesn't come into the team just because of who he is. That was one of the first things Roos changed when he came to our club. In the Neeld days, we'd drop someone only to bring them back 2 weeks later when we dropped someone else, regardless of their form.
Beat the door down, Benny and you'll get as game.

not sure who's kicking the winning score

wouldn't have been surprised if they used Mitch Brown to give them some firepower. He did kick a relative bag in the last VFL game against Geelong

Anyway fingers crossed the Pies game was an aberration

The same people who were kicking them for the first 6 rounds maybe?

I’d prefer a taller forward set up. Fritsch is too valuable on the flank and is not big enough to be a key forward. It is time to bite the bullet on Brown or are we waiting for him to kick a bag at Casey. At least they are playing this weekend for the first time in a long while. Jackson/Gawn will need to spend more time in the forward half Saturday night.

He will need to be super fit to get in.  Has the extra pre-season acheived the desired objective i wonder?

The MFC hasn't had a big tall (genuine quality super tall) leading forward in a fair while from what i can recall?

Would take weeks of training at full tilt with BB at top fitness.  Including specific drills in those training sessions with those doing the regular delivery inside to hit him up / leading patterns / timing / soft stab kicks out in front or to his favoured side (fat side also where possible) before everything starts to click / work and the effort (on the track) starts to pay off on game day IMV.

I'm not sure anything other than a pre-season period allows for this luxury and with BB injured in the 2021 pre season well...

I also doubt there's enough quality at VFL level (in terms of delivery) to see him busting the door down to the point he can't be ignored any longer.  3 to 5 goals max might be about as good as he (and his team mates at VFL level) might be capable of at that level.

Hoping otherwise and could be way off the mark but it may not happen this season.  2022 seems more likely.  Personally I'd love to see him get a run at it for a block of three to four matches before the season is out if the opp arises.

I still think the chicken (top fitness/full on training drills + success on the track between BB & the rest of team mates in those drills) would need to lay the egg first before we see a chic hatch on game day (FD sees chicken lay egg and puts BB in for a block of three to four games).

No Melksham anywhere. Hope he can get some form back, but at the moment, he's obviously a long way off it.

Interesting not replacing the tall....I guess we did go 6-0 with the Tmac and Jackson as the only talls and Fritsch the hybrid. Max will play more forward in this setup and Jackson more time in the ruck. Arguably this may be our best setup.

Glad Sparrow has been kept in. Was good against the Lions.

Interesting to see Jordon named in starting 18 on wing. Gus on bench.

Love Jack back in. He just brings intensity. He will crunch a few.  Bombers won't be thrilled to see his name.

You would expect our tackle count to be high this week.

Go Dees

Averaged 90.7 points per game with this kinda setup.

Averaged 86.6 with the three talls.

Clearly we’re looking for speed and legs against the Bombers.

They are coming off a six day break so this should allow us to break them open in the second half with Burgess Ball….if we come to play.

Still disappointed Ben Brown doesn’t get a game. Clearly there’s something still not right with him (knee) or you’d play him.

Really need big games from Kozzi, Fritta and TMac on Saturday.

I think you are reading to much into it.  The VFL has not played for a month and therefore hasn’t given him a chance to find form.  If he plays well on the weekend, he’ll come in

The right call and delighted to see Viney back in the team. Back to the early season set-up with the extra small and i won't be surprised if this is the set-up for the rest of the season. BB and the Weid will have to bang the door down and most likely route back into the team will be if TMAC or Fritsch are injured or out of form.

Maybe the footy dept don't just look at total goals as far as what they want from a player and how their section of the ground functions?

And really, all Brown had to do was kick a couple of goals at Casey to get back in and he didn't get anywhere near it. Unfortunately from him that was followed by the lockdown and no opportunities at VFL level.

The game v swans when him and tmac teamed up for 7 of our 10 goals was great then dropped one game later. That is the sort of one two fwd line that wins finals, as they say the talls don’t get any shorter at the end of games but the fast guys get slower

Like.

If you play two rucks then having two 195+ forwards unbalances the side.

Works ok for Geelong. Blicavs & Ratugolea as the two rucks with Cameron and Hawkins as the two tall forwards.

I’m a firm believer that BB is in our finals team.

Dont get it.

Given our other two fwds in Tmac and Fritta had shockers last game I wish bbb or mitch came in.

We played our best footy this year with this fwd line. If it works again it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

genuinely undecided about not picking BBB. I guess for his own sake they want him coming in with confidence. and form. Also I suppose we have 3 main options going forward. weid, brown, or neither of them. This at least gives us another look at option 3.

I think the reason they aren't play Ben Brown is because of Viney. Viney will be underdone and I doubt that he will play more than 60 per cent of game time. Ben Brown is in a similar boat so he is in need of form and fitness in the reserves.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
