Deefender 254 Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 (edited) Years ago (2012) I went to the season opening game against Brisbane. The noise levels were unbearable and exactly as you describe Red. I never returned to the MCG. They lost me altogether. We are governed by barbarians. sue 9,277 Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 It was a great relief at the GWS game in Manuka that the loudspeakers didn't seem to be working properly on the visitors' side of the ground so the level of loud drivel was much lower than usual. Maybe we need to start a chant of 'shut up' whenever the AFL's drones start their artificial atmosphere. 2 1 Quote

I've stopped going to games. Spot on Tony. I haven’t been going much recently, for various reasons, but the meaningless din and inability to chat with others has ruined the “match day experience” forme and many other I have spoken with, when able. Clearly Gil, and DumbItriou before him, have been influenced by the American sports, which in the case of gridiron is so stop start that it needs something to fill the gaps. They also presumably watch from glass boxes most of the time. The Essendon air raid siren was, in retrospect, just a minor annoyance especially when compared to the bloody intrusive betting ads, which pervade all aspects of our lives. hemingway 7,633 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 Agree with all the protests here. Sadly, we live in a world of marketing, merchandising, and advertising. Alongside the flashing dollar signs associated with this, you have misguided sport administrators who seem obsessed with the idea that game day experiences have to be enhanced by noise and other forms of game day entertainment. Silence, quiet conversation with a friend, fellow supporter or even opposition fan is a void that must be filled with noise. Quiet contemplation, nervousness, imaginative reckoning and expectation of things to come are not taken into account when considering game day enjoyment. It’s advertising and entertainment. Its like a torture. You have to sit through the torture before you get to enjoy the reason for our attendance, which is to watch your team play a game of footy. The simplicity and appeal of the sport is diminished by the noise and distraction. Sadly, it’s about dollars. Like many things, the views of fans are not part of the economic equation. 4 1 Quote
La Dee-vina Comedia 17,137 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 I didn't notice the music at the ground yesterday. But I did notice the screeching hawk after each Hawthorn goal. Rather than complain about it, though, my thought was more towards whether we're maximizing our own revenue possibilities. Could we sell the rights to a post-goal sound effect? And what would that sound be? I also noticed the annoying KFC "I don't care, I love it" being played over and over and can assure KFC that I do care, I didn't love it and that sort of promotion puts me off the sponsor's product. I'm sure that's true. But is there any corporate advertising revenue for the AFL or Ground Manager from the music played in the quarter-time/half-time breaks? 1 Quote
daisycutter 30,021 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 if the afl keep up this annoying, noisy, intruding, game day experience rubbish they will end up having to pay fans to attend just for the tv optics. there again they'd probably just use cgi technology to add virtual crowds. 1 Quote
Cyclops 512 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 I have the opinion that our game is entertaining enough unlike other football where it is so boring that the supporters sing through the match in an effort to entertain themselves. 4 Quote
Forest Demon 4,681 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 The footy is getting worse, but nothing could be as loud as the one Big Bash game I went to...never again. The music was ridiculously loud, the fake chants were embarrassing and the fire thrower things were so bloody hot considering it was the middle of summer. 1 Quote

Rab D Nesbitt 8,955 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 I think this may have started way back when South Melbourne moved up to Sydney. The scoreboard at the back of the old grass hill had two enormous speakers that pumped out that awful "Show 'Em Sydney" chant after every goal. We copped a few hidings up there in those days so it felt like they were playing it on a loop some years. Quote

It is played right up until the bounce starting each quarter and is so loud, you can't even hear the person next to you speak. People are screaming at each other and it is destroying the experience for me. If I want to go to a concert I will go to one, but this is footy, so at least turn it off 5 minutes before the bounce, so we can soak in the atmosphere of the game. It is a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes I thought that yesterday when I noticed it more. For some reason we feel we need to have music. Just turn down the volume. You get the loud music then the siren. It is hard to have a conversation and then what annoys me is when people have the conversations while the footy is being played which does really annoy me. At half time just let the auskick kids play and let people have a chat. I go and see the storm play and they don't have that. Edited April 19, 2021 by dees189227 1 Quote
