I'll have a DOUBLE CLAYTONS and Dry!

Catchcry from the great day where the non alcoholic drink of choice was a Clayton's!

Well segway to 2021 and as Caro has so rightly said she is surprised and worried that he is yet to commit!

I too am getting a little squirmish about it and would like to ask other posters what they would pay for a Two time B&F winner and All Australian to keep him at the DEES?

I'll open the bowling and say that if what it takes is for him to be the highest paid player at Melbourne then so be it.

If that is the case $750-$850 per year on a 5 year deal would seem to be where negotiations should be. Surely he is worth much more than Jack Viney!

Comments from other posters???

Tbh I feel he wants to see how the year pans out.
this is a guy feel and I have no info etc.

Whats he worth? Less than Trac, May and Max, more than Viney and co

Imo he won’t sign until he sees a change in the way we play, make finals and based on past history who can blame him.

In saying that he has a big part to play in the way we play too.

He’s a very good player and still young, but he’s replaceable.

$800 x 5 should be more than enough cash wise.

Think winning would be higher priority

Just another gut feeling, but my reckoning is that his performance this year won't affect his actual salary expectations so much (doing better means more faith in club, virtuous loop).

If we stink it up as a club and aren't looking like addressing it properly, he may look to take that pay cheque from somewhere else.

I do feel like he'll be a long-term Demon, though.

he'll either stay and be one of our highest paid players or he'll go and net us two first round picks, minimum, cos he'll be signing for upwards of $900k a year to go elsewhere

he's a gun and i'd rather keep him, but he needs to do the 'team things' a lot more

He’s not our best player and no one in the comp rates our side. Would think there is 6-10 blokes that could do similar work, maybe not at his level but probably 95% which still works

Huh? Under 25 AA gun? To replace him with 2 first round picks that may or not be good? The number of 1st round misses by us and other clubs is huge and you would risk that?

When you get a star you hang on. 2 x 50c does not equal $1 when it comes to footballers, basketballers etc.

He's important , but, he's not a match winner - albeit a great contributor. Once again yesterday he was goaless.

i.e  he's not Dusty, Buddy, Josh Kennedy, Danger, Selwood, Bont,

But guess who is?  - Petracca.

Christian this year will become the club's talisman and be the difference in making finals.

Not alone Petracca won't.

Oliver is our Scott West, except better. He'll be among our best players week in week out and that is priceless - especially when we have so many inconsisent players in our midfield. He's the stable rock of of stoppages when everyone else is being mixed and matched and experimented with because none of them are proving reliable enough.  I mean, seriously, Oliver's closest rival for clearances on the weekend was Alex Neal-Bullen who is simply not an inside midfielder.

Agree with this. Petracca is the MUST keep. If that means letting Oliver go, so be it.

This is exactly the point, he’s a very even contributor and gets plenty of attention, but from an opposition point of view he would not be the one they want to stop. I think it would currently be Trac, Gawn, May and/or Lever then Oliver. He was rated our 5th best yesterday in the match report, so even they thought a lot of his 35 touches weren’t great or important.

If letting go of Oliver nets us enough picks to bring home a Matt Rowell, I’d be asking where to sign (gotta feel for him right now, poor bugger)

If letting go of Oliver got us Josh Kelly or Whitfield, same thing.

There’s many more players that could improve our side but even more that could fill his role for zero net loss

Good players always need to accept less to stay and there’d be crazy money being put in front of a player of Oliver’s age and ability.

Not expecting a long term deal.  Im confident he’ll stay, but only for enough years to take him to FA.

That’s how I read it.

At best he’ll sign a 2 year extension like Petracca to take him to free agency at which point he’ll sign the biggest contract of his career.

I think we’re in trouble if he leaves next year as you can’t exactly replace a player of his quality.

Gawn is our El Capitano and our Best Player, Followed by Clarry, Petracca, May, Lever in no particular order.

He's a two time best and fairest, All Australian and needs to be paid accordingly.

My guess is he's thinking about doing a Dusty and let his football do the talking in a Contract year. With all that has happened in the footballing landscape with footy cap restrictions, a 2-3 year deal would suffice.

I would have him at around 800-850k a season, length of contract completely up to the powers that be.

Other clubs like Carlton and Essendon can offer him a mammoth contract that we can't compete with, it's about offering a contract that values his worth to the club, this is key to be in line or slightly above May, Lever Big Ben, Tmac etc.

Im hoping the club have a strategy to have similar Contracts for Trac and Clarry on parity with Gawn, they are the pillars of the club.

If the club low ball him or we fall into a hole on-field he will take top dollar being offered. Both Carlton and Peptides would have been trickling in his ear since last year about a massive deal and other deals thrown into the mix.
