Farewell Oscar McDonald

Well I always liked Oscar and hope he gets another chance. So thank you Oscar and good luck. I think he will be picked up.

Thank God. He was a liability for so many years. And it just goes to show how blinded and biased some demonlanders are. For people, including the mfc, to expect to get a trade for OMac highlights just how misguided and biased their opinions are. He was the Jack Watts of the backline. And was gifted most of his games.

I wondered who'd be the first to make a nasty comment.  No surprises there.

All the best, Oscar.

Must remember not to ask you to speak at a funeral.

Best 22 to gone after just one season.

shame there haven't been more follow this path recently

He just didn’t have quick reactions

All the best Oscar and thanks for 81 games

81 more than me

Always hoped he would improve but watching him closely at Casey a few times thought he also struggled at that level

I think he could have been tried in other positions

He never had the confidence to succeed on the last line of defence

Really hope he gets picked up as a DFA, just so Ben Brown can kick a bag on him one more time

In all seriousness though, best of luck to him. A limited footballer, but he's far better than many on here give credit for (not saying much I know). You don't play 81 games of AFL without a hell of a lot of hard work and talent.

I always thought he played as though he read the comments about him on Demonland.

Not as bad as some made him out to be but limited none the less. Not sure he’s the answer for another team but if he’s gets the opportunity then good luck to him.

Thanks Oscar.

Played some very good games for the club. Sadly we can't keep everyone. @binman will be very disappointed.

Like many here I thought Oscar was better than many rated him but in a sense it's a relief to see him go because I hated the spiteful and unnecessary comment that followed him on here.

I met Oscar once at training last year and couldn't have been more impressed.  Articulate, thoughtful and intelligent he is in the process of finishing a science degree at Melbourne University.  If he wants to be picked up then I hope he is but I suspect he might focus on his career after footy.

Good luck Oscar in whatever you do, I wish you every success.  You can be very proud of what you achieved, very few play over 50 AFL games.  My avatar isn't changing for a while yet.

Give it a rest

If I remember correctly Oscar was/is academically quite gifted so football may well be just a brief adjunct to a fuller life. Good luck to him?!

It's always a bit of a mystery why some players of limited ability are embraced by fans, whilst others become the subject of total derision.  There's a fine line between 'cult favourite' and 'scapegoat'.

Oscar wore way too much abuse over the years and became a scapegoat for many of the teams overall failings.  It was almost comical at times the things he was blamed for - even when it wasn't his opponent, he wasn't even in that part of the ground.  Every goal Melbourne would concede would somehow be pinned on OMac.

Wish him all the best.

Always a Demon!

I thank Oscar for his services over the journey. I wish him all the best for the future and think Port Adelaide would be a perfect fit for a key back as they are undersized down in that department.

His papers were stamped after that Port Adelaide game, but club and player move on now.

Anyone checked on @binman?

Sad to see him go, to be honest. He held up the KPD role for a couple of years when we had no-one else who could. Has fallen down the pecking order behind players who are either more capable (May especially) or who can play multiple roles (Smith, Tomlinson). Plus Petty lurking in the wings.

Good luck to him, he's still young and you'd think he has a good chance of being picked up elsewhere.

Can someone check in with @binman please?

How many people can say they played 81 games of AFL footy?  There aren't a whole lot, and while I think this move is right for the club moving forward, I can't help but think that Oscar got every ounce of ability out of himself when he played for the club.  Okay, that ability might have fallen short of others, but he did a good job for us in 2018 when we reached the Prelim (and in the EF and SF games he was part of a backline that kept the opposition to very modest scores).

All the best, Oscar.  Hopefully someone takes a punt but, if not, I wish you well in any future endeavours.

A mid 50s pick who played 80+ games of footy and seemed to work hard, be well liked and get a lot out of himself even though he didn’t appear to be athletically gifted. I see myself as a pretty resilient bloke and if I had to put up with an ounce of the persistent stuff that he had written about him by faceless trolls I would probably lose all confidence and enjoyment in a game I once loved.

Hopefully he gets to reset and have a crack at another club if that’s what he hopes for.

Good luck Oscar.

If Zac Dawson can get a couple of life lines so can O Mac.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
