He had a couple of neat taps to Viney when he had very modest opposition. 26 hitouts is not a huge tally. Only four marks, all on the wing I think. He played well, but so did the other players receiving (serious) votes. Noted that several others have left Max out of their votes.

Except for the big contested mark against Daniher in the centre of the ground late in the game which directly resulted in the Fritsch goal from the square (mark>Brown>to the square where Fritsch snapped a goal).  And then the intercept spoil from Hibberd's miskick which resulted in Hunt's goal in the last.  10 hitouts to advantage, 7 score involvements.  Quantity and quality is a constant argument with ruckmen and you'll note Essendon are not a big stoppage team, hence the lower than usual number of hitouts.

To all those who have supported Spargo, today he was an absolute spud. I was at the game and he ran in circles. Completely lost.

6 Langdon - run run run  all day

5 Brown - provided a target and worked hard to provide a contest. Cannot believe we left him out for so many games

4 Lever- spolied and marked anything that went his way. Often on Tipungwati which was a coaching mistake but he was able to defend all day

3 Salem - composed and creative

2 Hunt- was the difference. His goalkicking was crucial and impressive

1 Petracca - clearly not 100%.  Spent big part forward in the 2nd half. But his 2nd quarter lifted us and linked and contested to a high standard

apologies - Maxy, Fritters & May

Wow, votes are all over the shop this evening. Here's some more:

6 Petracca

5 Salem

4 Langdon

3 Gawn

2 May

1 Hunt

If Hunt's name was Cyril he would get alot more 6 votes in this thread.

Yes for this with an honourable mention to Brown.  How anyone has left Gawn out of the votes today defies any reasonable assessment of the game.

More to the point is the number of people leaving Brown out of their votes!  20 disposals and 13 marks as a high half forward/CHF.  He had a huge game.

Very hard to give votes as that was the most contributors we have had all season.

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.
