Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I think he's still impeded by injury, looks to be lacking a lot of energy in the way he moves.

Would not be surprised if he wanted to get back home in the next 12-18 months, his career has not gone according to plan so far

looked to be maybe carrying a bit too much weight?

Just heard this as well. Unbelievable that Carlton are again in the box seat to recruit another high profile player on presumably big money. Pick 6 + extras would be the starting point.

Guess being woeful for so long is paying dividends for them come trade time. Sad to say that they'll probably be a decent team next year.

Reportedly paying 700k for Cerra.

Salary cap doesn't exist at Carlton?

Wow.  Harry $$$. Weitering $$$. Jack Martin on big $$.  Zac Williams $$$ Adem Saad $$$ Cripps $$$$$ Walsh $$$$$. Surely if they pay Cerra $700k a season they must be then getting tight for salary cap.

I think Cerra and future 3rd rounder goes to Blues in exchange for pick 6 and Petrevski-Seton.

Have no idea why a young player with so much potential would commit to a club that is an absolute basket case.

$$$$$ is the only answer.

I think a very high volume of AFL footballers are being encouraged to treat the game like a short term occupation. Suits managers, suits the players and keeps the offseason interesting.

Someone at Carlton must have an incredible marketing pitch because there is very little foundation in the place at present

@daisycutter I thought the same about Rowell, guess he did a lot of weight work rather than load on his legs

Is Cerra a wingman? He's had 1 game in his career over 30 possession.  He's not particularly damaging with the ball, or even a contested ball beast. Essentially his game is being fit, being young, run around getting some uncontested ball. He doesnt tackle.

Brayshaw is the guy in that team that broke out this year. Carlton can have him, he's not making their team that much better.  Ill probably eat my words but total overs in every respect.

cripps, mckay, mcgovern, williams, saad, weitering, martin all on big coin, plus walsh coming out of contract...

Gee they have some over paid crud on their list.  Cerra wont solve their issues. Weitering is the only good back man, andJones has about 1-2 years max.

Perhaps we haven't heard anything about us because of finals but I suspect this year was all about player retention and we'll play little part in the trade period.

We will have some cash freed up post the McDonald and Brayshaw contracts expiring at the end of next year as well as Hibberd, Melksham, Jetta, Jones and AvB all not likely to be on the list come 2023.

Jackson and Oliver are the priority re-signings come 2022 and 2023 respectively but with some good accounting and trading into the future draft pool we can probably make a significant play for a high profile player. Ben King anyone?

Money isn't the only reason Cerra would target Carlton. Despite how they look right now, they have one of the best cores in the league. It'll turn quickly and he, Walsh and Cripps, supported by Ed Curnow is a pretty decent, if lacking in support, midfield.

Yes Jacko and Oliver are 2 big signings.

Jacko will get thrown the kitchen sink (especially if he wins rising star).

Oliver (if he wins Brownlow) will be offered monster deals.

I know anything is possible but I can't see Oliver leaving Trac behind

Maybe Carlton are the only team that have the right pick/s for Freo and can 'find' the cap space to pay him???

Freo reportedly offered him 2 or 4 year deal on very good coin, so I don't think the Blues' offer is necessarily much different.

Not to mention the bookends of Weitering and McKay would be the envy of nearly every team.

They still need to sell the club to you, Carlton have the bones of a very good side but you want to know who the coach will be. The way the Carlton Board has handled this review is shambolic with little respect to the people being reviewed.  Yesterday highlighted this, Teague is gone but they just keep him on as an insurance policy should the coach of their choice R Lyon knock them back.

Yep. And then there's Charlie Curnow and the second best interceptor in the league in Liam Jones. Their spine is outstanding. I think in 2-3 years they'll be our main competition.

Here is the current side and AFL Player Ratings:

Trent Rivers (35) Harrison Petty (33) Jake Lever (91)

Joel Smith (36) Steven May (95) Christian Salem (93)

Angus Brayshaw (35) Clayton Oliver (99) Ed Langdon (52)

Alex Neal-Bullen (46) Tom McDonald (86) Charlie Spargo (24)

Kysaiah Pickett (65) Ben Brown (70) Bayley Fritsch (83)

Max Gawn (96) Christian Petracca (99) Jack Viney (63)

Luke Jackson (53) James Harmes (51) Tom Sparrow (15) Jake Bowey (13)

James Jordon (28)

Other Players:

Jayden Hunt (47)

Majak Daw (79)

Neville Jetta (61)

Mitch Brown (56)

Marty Hore (52)

Michael Hibberd (45)

Sam Weideman (36)

Jake Melksham (35)

Adam Tomlinson (30)

Nathan Jones (24)

Aaron vandenBerg (19)

Jay Lockhart (17)

Oskar Baker (16)

Toby Bedford (13)

Kade Chandler (13)

The AFL Player Ratings of some players are obviously skewed by opportunity. (Oliver would have a lower rating if he played Sparrows game time/role and vice versa. Brayshaw also has a very low rating due to our game plan limiting his involvement to the defensive wing. The ratings are also impacted by games played (i.e. Bowey at 13).

My take on the best way to improve our list:

  • We have a lot of money tied and years tied up in the midfield (Petracca, Viney, Oliver and Harmes) and backline (May, Lever, Salem).
  • Ben Brown has 3 years left and we need to try to have players in the forward line which complement him.
  • Retaining Jackson and Oliver long term should be a priority, so we need to save our salary cap space.
  • Upgrading our small/mid-sized forwards would be the easiest way to improve our side. We could get natural improvement from Spargo, Sparrow, Chandler and Laurie, but this should still be our focus IMO.
  • Upgrading Brayshaw to a more natural winger would also be something to consider. However, we have Rosman on the list who has shown potential and the current game plan has got us to top of the ladder. Even if we had a more natural wing option, would Goodwin want to play a more expansive game style now?

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
