They have our first round pick in the draft this year too. Plenty of reason to win this match in particular for them,  not to mention they've owned us for well over a decade.

Still,  I expect a win!

I thnk every side thinks they can beat Melbourne. Particularly the bottom sides.

Pressure them hard early and they will fold. Its been a recipe for success over the years. The Crows tried it.

very hard to reconcile your observation with that facts that:

  • we have lost to 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th
  • we currently sit 12th
  • we have defeated 11th, 13th, 14th and 18th

Ah those pesky facts...

Like the fact that we have 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 15th, 16th and 17th to go... bodes well if we can get rolling.

I have no idea who Goodwin will select. He doesn't so how could i?

But if i were king for the day:

I''d drop Melksham in a heartbeat. I don't care how good his kicking is (which shows how frustrated i am with him)  His attitude is rubbish. Is playing for himself. Exhibit A was his instinctive annoyed reaction when tracc took advantage after he was paid a free. And his halfhearted effort at marking (clearly worried about contact) put the the icing on the [censored] cake.

Benell was abysmal. First the first time his lack of physical intensity was an issue for me. The worst it has been. Maybe one more chance, but i'm vascilating. Which is very frustrating as it is not possible for us to need his skill more.

Jones out. Actually played not too bad. But in my team there is no room against a pretty quick roos team (actually no team) for wagon one, two and three of the slow train - Tomlinson, Brayshaw and Jones.

At half time Brayshaw was out of my team (but not goody's - brayshaw is Donald trump and Goodwin's his incorrigibles - doesn't mater what he does, he loves him) but a decent second half saves him. I was pleasantly surprised i have to say, i thought it was strange move by Goody putting him in the guts, but he seemed to relish the position.

Looks like we have fond another inside mid, which is good because i was worried we didn't have enough.

ANB out. What can i say, other than if we have almost a full list to choose from and he gets a game our list aint that strong.

In Hannan for Melksham. Kozzie for  ANB. Omac goes comes in to play full back.

Tomlinson replaces Jones on the wing, or wherever it is he actually plays.

On Tomlinson he was ok, but he is not a defender. We got him to run up and down the wings. How about we play him in that role.

Tracca, at the risk of a weird form of deja vu my thought watching live (and then the replay they showed), was that goal by Himmleburg was 99% Tomo's fault (the other 1% was Lever).

I might be wrong and will look at the tape but my recollection is he was man on man with with him in the marking contest, completely lost body contact with him, got lost when the ball hit the ground, and allowed Himmleburg to be able to drop the mark, still crumb it himself (no small feat given his size - this is where the 1% Lever comes in) and snap an easy goal.

I might well be wrong, and perhaps it is my Omac confirmation bias at play (i'll get that checked by a doctor i think) but my thought when watching the replay was 'imagine what DL posters would say if it was Omac who was schooled so badly by a big unco rookie'.

Agree with Melksham.

That marking contest was a disgrace. all he had to do was jump up straight to draw frontal contact but he took the easy option out and leaned back.

I know this sounds like I'm setting the bar very low here but I'll be impressed if we beat North this week. This club has completely owned us since 2007 and it's been an indictment on our recent history. Its not as if they've been a dominant side such as Geelong, Hawthorn or WC of recent years.

Cunnington, Higgins and Brown have been the major culprits. Fortunately 2 of them will be missing.

I hate to admit but I think this is the first week Bennell gets dropped as opposed to rested.

We had a crushing win over North in rnd 3, 2018 at the G.

They will really work us over.  Even if they lose they will make sure we will be sore and sorry making it harder to win games in this compressed schedule to increase the value of their demon draft pick.

Still expecting to win.  They have no game plan.

We might as well pack 2020 up if we can't beat North they are pretty awful...a dirty scrappy game shouldn't worry us, we have the players built for that. Its the quick, skilful sides that cut us apart.

I reckon 99% of North supporters will be confident about this week.

I would be too, if I were them. They've only lost to us once in the last 14 years.

They play a pretty poor quality of football but have really only put in two absolute shockers: vs the Dogs in Round 5 (kicking only 5 goals) and vs Richmond in Round 7 (only 2 goals).

In three of their last four games they've pushed Essendon and Carlton, and belted Adelaide.

That form line reads like a mid-table side more so than a cellar dweller, although I'd be concerned that they're yet to play Port, Brisbane, West Coast and Geelong.

Countering that, they've only played at 4 venues in their first 10 matches (Marvel, Giants, Metricon, Gabba) and they haven't left Queensland since the Victorian exodus in the first week of July.

Conversely, we've played at 7 venues in our first 9 games, and in the same time that they've been based in Queensland, we've played in three different states.

I've just gone to the Urban Dictionary to see if "vanders" or "vandenberg" has been included in the dictionary as part of the explanation of the meaning "harder than a cat's head". It hasn't, though it probably should be.

If you go to that page you'll see a direct reference and link to AFL. The fifth* definition of AFL in Urban Dictionary is, um, unusual and unexpected.

*It's numbered as the fifth, but it's actually the sixth.

Jeezus LDvC!  I checked the definition  link and up came a pic of a goddess in pink bikini bottoms fishing! Just as it opened, my wife walked in behInd me.  She just gave me “the look” called me a “sad old man” and walked away shaking her head!  It is pointless trying to explain it was footy related.

22 played and we had 4 emergencies in Spargo, the Macs and Rivers. We have only taken 29 to Adelaide I believe. Pickett is one who would be the other other 2. Clearly the changes must come from this group.

ANB for Kozzie is s given. Would be good to know the other 2 but I doubt it is some of the names being cast..

This weeks game is just as important as last weeks game imo.

Will be interesting to see if we go back to our old ways considering we only played one good quarter being the last when the crows pressure eased off.

If north pressure us for 4 quarters I’m not sure we are good enough to deal with it.

Big test for Goodwin at selection and on GameDay.

The pressure is still well and truely on the coach and team.

So you think that the bottom teams DONT think they can beat us? Let me tell you, from what i have heard from a couple of AFL players, we are barely respected by most teams. Publicly the message might be different, but in private we are still not rated.

The whole footy world thinks we are a flaky side who doesnt like pressure. The fact we have beaten a few bad teams doesnt change that.

AVB has been cleared of bone damage, however, that head clash early in the first quarter required 15 stitches above the eye on the same side as the cheekbone damage.  Unbelievably tough.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
