WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - KYSAIAH KROPINYERI PICKETT

Just bamboozled at the composure, and work rate of this young excitement machine - the “fiercely driven moment” on the MFC website featured (I think) our 10th (or 11th) goal with a triple involvement of Kossie starting on the wing, gather, handball, handball receive then a 100 meter dash to clean up a spoiled mark by BBB.

Just amazing stuff for anyone, let alone a second year player.

Is it in the goal of the week lineup?  I guess more likely some freak fluke dribble from the boundary.?

Imagine how good he would be with half as much tape on his body.

I’m not concerned at all about him breaking down with his hands, wrists, knee and one entire thigh taped up… not at ALL!

I just assumed he is sponsored by Leuko.

Kozzie is a jet is tough, smart and has skills that are out of the reach for most players, his footy IQ is elite. That goal reminded me of the Wizz’s great goal at Waverley, who is judging goal of the year, he worked so hard Can You Believe It....!!!!

Happened to be flicking round different radio stations this afternoon and landed on 3AW with Gerard Healy - he did a big start to the segment all on Kozzie.  He can't help himself!  But it was great listening as a dees fan.  A couple of points he made:

  • A lock for the AA team if he keeps up this form
  • Couldn't remember a better 1st / 2nd year player in all his days as an AA selector.
  • Similar stats to Cyril in his second year in terms of averages but averaging 2 goals a game (rather than 1).

He then asked his co-hosts (Richo and maybe scoop maclure) what they thought of Kozzie before starting the interview with their guest Stewie Dew by asking him about how good Kozzie is.

Was a good listen!

I thought the exact same thing. I think Wiz’s looked more spectacular because he started on half back and just had a clear path to keep running, then pulled off a barrel that skidded through. Definite parallels to that great goal though, and ultimately his work rate will be what the coaches praise the most.

Putting aside what Kozzie offers on the field, in my 50 odd years of supporting this club we have never had such a marketable players. Between Gawn, Petracca and Kozzie there should be real opportunities for the club to gain sponsors and supporters. There are going to be lots of kids wearing jumpers with 5, 11 and 36 on the back of them. Actually you can throw Jackson into that mix too

Jackson and Pickett are a marketers dream if you are going after the youngsters.

Imagine a 15 minute TV program. This is where youtube provides an easy testing ground for an entrepreneurial programmer. And of course there's TikTok.

I wonder to what extent the AFL has the players tied up. If it had to go through the AFL site it would be a dodo.

Awesome, you inspired me to hunt it down.   Great listen and he starts the episode praising Kozzie so if anyone wants to listen just start from the very start lol

Its the May 5th episode.  Good that Richo is an AA selector and is praising him as much as Gerard.

An inspired move by Taylor and his team, that most of the AFL footy world would have ridiculed at the time.

Here he is from 2014. At that stage, I would have picked Naitanui ahead of him.

Nice of young Kozzie to take time out of his day and grant that guys picture request.

Can’t believe the improvement in 12 months. I must admit when I first saw him he would fumble, had no endurance and I wasn’t sure about him. How wrong was I. What a player we have.

Yes, but a lot of that would have been confidence and settling into the tempo of the game. This year has been a credit to him in relation to his fitness especially in light of his circumstances pre season. Shows he is a good young kid as well as a good player. Well done.

Already better than peak Cyril? The stats behind Kozzy's stunning rise - https://www.afl.com.au/news/608299

From the article:

"Forget about Rioli's own sophomore campaign in 2009, it's more illustrative to compare Pickett's first seven games of this season to Rioli's best seasons – his All-Australian years of 2015 and 2016. That's where a picture of Pickett's true impact can best be painted.

The beauty of Rioli was that he sustained such a level of greatness over a longer period than just these two years. Even still, the two years is a significantly larger sample size than Pickett's first seven games of this season.

But for the 19-year-old Pickett to already be reaching such a gifted standard over a sizeable period, even if that period is barely two months of footy, still bears highlighting and exemplifies exactly the sort of talent Melbourne has at its disposal".

Awesome comparison and stats.  He does all the hard defensive stuff and not just the flashy stuff.

I believe he lives with Petracca and Spargo so I doubt articles like this will go to his head.  No better role model than Petracca to learn professionalism and the hard work required.  And while late to humbleness, Petracca has a lot to offer Kozzie (and Charlie) in that regard.

Hes too good.  Just too good.

Pray to heavens he stays a Demon for life...  Norm Smith and Neita could do with some company in the 500 goal club.

I think its been relatively forgotten that his mother passed away early in the year and he trained away from the group over in Adelaide - with Norwood I believe.

To have to deal with such a major life event at his age and to get so fit with the program given to him by Burgo is frankly amazing. Shows outstanding dedication.

We could just as easily been writing -  Kozzie had a major interrupted pre-season and has the second year blues.

He is clearly very driven and we are very thankful for that,

Kozzie is a game changer. The most exciting young player in the comp by far. AA and Norm Smith medal potential. Jason Taylor is some kind of genius.

Does Kozzies old man still do stand up comedy?  And if so why haven't they had him as a guest on The Front Bar or anywhere else.

Saw him on the bill for an upcoming gig in Katherine as part of the travelling Melbourne Comedy Festival. The answer to the second question is that he's not particularly funny, class battles aside.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
