Looks like King and Kent along with Johnstone coming along nicely.

it's more the fact all of his kicks are so loopy and cause contests rather then nice flat passes, he will never make it at afl level unless he can learn to kick flat

Apart from Melksham, Fritsch & Salem our whole team are average kicks.

One thing I noticed was Baker always held his width off the contest, to act as the loose side winger.  This meant he spent a lot of time between these zones, as he was the widest player for both teams off the contest when it was on the opposite wing.  He would then run to make space wider, or be a target on an angle.  When was on his side, I didn’t see who held width the other way.  He got involved, some of his disposal was less than polished, but he looks highly likely.  A good game.

I note the Bummers had a couple of very fleet footed runners, which absolutely suits their game style to break lines and rebound off half back.  One or two of these might be valuable at Melbourne.

F50 entries seem to be our Achilles heel.

We were kicking over 100 pts for 6 games, we kicked 91 points against Collingwood, we bombed it in against Port but still got 68 entries, bombing it in for one game was/is the issue

Hind for Essendon certainly looks like he has some potential. Bit of speed and class. Worth a look by Taylor and co I think. 23yo (soon to be 24), 180cm

That was an interesting game to watch.

Worth noting that they showed some of Rawlings' quarter time talk and he singled out Vince, Pederesn and King for efforts in the first.  I think in all cases it was their attack on the man that he was praising.  Vince came out at the start and bulldozed his way through a few players to get to the ball which set the tone nicely.

I'm amazed that Keilty hasn't had a call-up yet.  I see him as the obvious replacement for Lever of the tall defenders in our side.  He's a very strong intercept mark, he's calm under pressure and his disposal is as good as any.  I'd have him ahead of J. Smith any day.  Frost showed a lot today as well, but his hands aren't as good and you can't trust his disposal.

I really liked the look of Baker. He seems to use his pace to get into space more than running with the ball.  He was able to find room constantly and give an uncontested option for his teammates.  Could have had a couple of shots as well, but he seems to prefer giving them off.  Definite potential there.

An interesting reflection on the different ways different people see things: this is not meant as criticism, rather as a comment on the joyous diversity of the human condition (assuming both are members of this species of course ... not that you necessarily need to be to enjoy footy, and Demonland is an equal opportunity all embracing family).

As a matter of interest, were you at the game or did you watch it on TV?

Balic injured or just slow?

Slow.  Speed hasn't ever been one of his tricks. When fully fit, a good endurance athlete, competitive and great decision maker in close.

I guess the question may be is Keilty competing with Petty (who got the nod this week) or with J Smith? (I don't know the answer to this question b y the way.)

Watched it on TV Mono, but the reason why i said what i said was because it related more to two players in Kent and Weideman, and what they have to cop on the site.......

TV. Certainly not writing him off - just looks very out of condion and will need a body of work at Casey before being considered. I guess my comments were coloured by him saying he wanted more midfield time. He’s miles off that.

I don't rate Frost. Never looks assured at the contest, and his disposal is very iffy ... It's a shame that the ruck experiment with him a couple of years ago was unsuccessful. It could have been his saving grace.

Pretty and Keilty are obviously now ahead of him.

Not convinced about J. Smith either, but probably too early to make a considered judgement.

They were quick in straight lines, when they broke clear.

because the Frost ruck experiment didn't work when he was a few years younger,,, doesn't mean that it wouldn't now he is a couple of years older, and a bit wiser ?

Still worth a try i think, as his play has been more assertive, and he has shown a few little things here or there, in the past month.

Might be worth revisiting the ruck thing.

Oskar Baker is a fast Dom Tyson at this point

Which is a significant point of difference. We're stacked with one paced inside mids but we lack speed and outside run. Baker plays like a classic wingman. Must be a chance to come in next week though Goody may find another inside mid to promote!

sensible suggestion.. sometimes we get too concerned about winning at VFL level and forget what that team is really about ie experimentation

Struggling big time at VFL level.

Looks like I was right and @Satyriconhome was wrong...  again.

He ain’t setting the world on fire, but id suggest 7 tackles would indicate he had roughly 15 or so pressure acts, meaning he’d have played his role quite well.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
