As I said I like Gaff... but with our dwindling resources in the salary cap, this deecision is Crucial, to get it right.   We are very one geared.  We are very much a power geared side,,, and i want us to add an extra dimension to our run and carry.

Pace, breaks big games open.

Hunt was our pace but instead of teaching him to lower his eyes we dropped him and now his season is over right when we need him

Why do you say, 'instead of teaching him'?

Don't you reckon we've been trying to get him to use the ball better since last season ?  The coaches of course, would have been working on that with him.

And so we have worked hard on getting ur half back sorted so we use the ball better coming out of defence.  We have been much better at this, in 2018.

But sadly Hunt has not been able to capture his best form, from the wing.

Our depth has miraculously improved from defence, since we recruited Lever, and others last year.

In a team lacking a bit of dash Id play Hunt and Garlett. Too good for the seconds in my opinion

I disagree on Garlett this year.

Hasn't deserved it.  You have to earn it,,, by doing the things 'the coaches' and 'the team' want/need.  Not watt 'you', want to do only.

Watt was quick as well, like a fox, unfortunately.

But not so much a 'team' man. just one of the' buoys'.  floated around waiting.   'watt of the wisp'.

We want pace, with 'attitude',,, or 'brute', see Danger.   'will of the wisp', not so much.

I guess that's why we got Spargo, and Baker, both have 'tude'.  But both not what i'm talking about.

'De Goey will be hotter property, and I am thinking he's skills are a better investment, than Gaff's gut run.

Petracca vs De Goey

https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=12&pid1=4041&fid1=S&playerStatus2=A&tid2=5&pid2=4043&fid2=S&type=A

Tracking similarly. Given out scoring options it is reasonanble to suggest we rely less on Trac kicking goals, and so therefore he is given fewer opportunities to score than De Goey.

Trac wins in CP, rebound 50s, intercepts and metres gained. De Goey in goals, i50s, and score involvements.

This tells us Trac is playing more of a defensive role, De Goey more an attacking role.

Is the effectiveness of a midfielder-swingman determined exclusively on their scoreboard impact? I think Trac is have a very solid year. As is De Goey.

Pick 5 behind Petracca and Brayshaw in 2014, has just hit 50 games. We have no first round pick this year and cannot trade next years, so unless we're wiling to trade one of our own young guns (Trac, Oliver, Hogan, Brayshaw) then we cannot get him or Wines or anyone. On the basis, can't see it happening and prefer our youngsters to him.

Youngsters with talent grow up and then hell breaks loose on the field. We have a great list. Culture and hunger are missing but these are bubbling now more than the recent (20 years) past.

Dreaming that you could essentially trade Brayshaw for De Goey.

I don't know the difference in market values,,, only the clubs would.   But I do know that a top 10 pick would go a long way towards that end, as trade in part for De Goey.

Now I know we all like Gus, but unfortunately he is a long term risk.  We are not the complete list, that people have been talking about in recent seasons.

And I know one pacy player is not the answer, just as Diamond Jim was not the answer on his lonesome,,, back in the 60's.

We need to include about 3 quickish players into our lineup, IMO.   Stretch might be one?   Hunt at present, isn't.

DShiel would go some way to help.

Degoey would be fantastic.

Gaff wouldn't, IMO.

Buying in, would mean, we have to make some tough (ruthless) decisions with our list.  We have to enter trade;,,, and yes trade some favourite players.

So who are the Kangas going to trade to make this happen

Will not be easy.

Hope CW match the payment and sends them broke

Just don't see how Degoey moves without the Kangas losing picks and players

He won’t go anywhere. Eddie will put a horses head in his sisters bed.

Or maybe a fanticised version of Tom Lynch. Eddie would be creaming himself.

Pies will not lose De Goey IMO.

Pies will lose players to keep him and he will forego some cash, but IMO will not leave.

He will sign a 2 year deal at less cash, say $800k per year, or a longer term one, if he is happy to forego the future offers that may come.

Pies will try and pension Wells off and other players can be moved on as well. Hearing rumours about Moore going as well, but I think he will only go if they get another key forward. Hello Tom, even though the Tigers appear to be the leaders in his chase.

In the normal run of events I would agree but the Tom Lynch factor comes into this. From all reports their cap is running tight, Pendlebury and Sidebottom would be eating up a bit and they had to shell out the dollars to lure Adams and Treloar to the club. Can they find all that money even at 800k for De Goey and still find the cash for Lynch whom they have been openly chasing?

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
