Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

pre-emptive move - all clubs are preparing for the afl stopping clubs owning pokies licenses, whilst at the same time taking in excess of $10m from crownbet to be official wagering partner, plus all the residuals from the other gambling companies

the afl hypocritical? well, i never...

Another AFL exposure against the morally astute?

Interesting that Saints with about 15% more gaming revenue make 100% more profit than us. We must have a far higher expense ratio for every gambling dollar taken.

Seemingly, some supporters like how this makes them "feel" even though nothing will change for the customers of these machines.

In some ways, a football club, which in essence survives through social cohesion, is better placed to support those who may end up having a problem with gambling than a profit-driven entity.

That said, it's a legal product, a great revenue stream, and the club won't necessarily always be well managed.

Unless there's a bigger game happening that I'm not privy to I think it's a poor and potentially short-sighted move.

I think it would be safe to assume that there is a bigger game happening. I am confident that PJ and our CFO and the Board are not all idiots.

Mustn't be many people with the right skills then.

Let's face it .... the problem with sports betting is that it is now pervasive among the young (mainly males) following the game.

It will soon attract the same criticism that rightly we give to the pokies.

without a doubt, jim.  and it's easier to bet as you don't even have to go to a venue. just need a smart phone and we know how ubiquitous they are

Sports betting will be the new scourge

We now have 4 years to find new Revenue streams. We should be able to sort that out, Talk to Ethan Musk NOW.

Will the AFL severe ties with Sports Betting advertising, it is so hypocritical that they are pushing this moral ground

the machines will still operate...

The alternative could be Dr. Who’s Business Directory.....

some truth in that. i remember decades ago they tried to get sports betting up and it was a real failure.

i think the internet, graphics, technology and smart phones have played a big part not only making it more available and immediate but adding a lot of "glamour" to it

Exactly.

PJ has done nothing but improved our club financially!
He isn't stupid enough to give up this type of revenue without knowing he can replace it long term.

This is not 10 years ago, this club is actually run by people who know what they are doing now.

My observations of local rsl and pubs suggests there in no shortage of younger gens ready to fill the shoes of any declining boomers.

Pokies are going nowhere....not unless outlawed ( as if )

Losing a $3M annual profit from gaming means the capital needed to replace it has to be in the order of $30 - $60M.!!

I’m thinking there will have to be an announcement of a new training base for the club paid for by the AFL to just allow us to break even.

And then there still remains the question of on going revenue to allow us to support the side financially into the future.

Few people jumping to conclusions, around lost revenue etc. without knowing, what the exact revenue and profits were for each venue, what sale proceeds they expect and what they will use those funds for. So far this administration has been pretty spot on with most of their moves (that's publicly visible) so happy to back them in until further info is provided.

Have heard some talk that the venue in Bentleigh would be worth a whole lot more if bulldozed and housing/units built. Maybe they'll enter into some sort of property development opportunity?

I've never been a massive opponent to pokies being involved in the footy club revenue. If people wish to use them they do so on their own volition, as long as there was no active advertisement of it then play on I felt.

It's more the sports gambling with sportsbet, TAB etc that I've had issues with, particularly the odds being discussed/shown during the telecast. There should be a blanket ban on that side of things and I'd support no sponsorship by those betting agencies being allowed.

How much space do the pokies take up at those venues? I hope they're considering creative ways to utilise the space in order to drum up additional cliental.

The club needs ongoing revenue opportunities. Bulldozing a revenue generating venue for immediate financial gain probably isn't the best move.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
