Many are blissfully unaware of how widespread tanking is.  Both here in the AFL and in overseas sports.  It makes no difference as to whether people are interested in other sports - the issue is about tanking.

As for Caro - she is nothing but a muck-raking gossip columnist who I have zero respect for.  Mainly based on her disgusting comments about the para-olympian athletes.  Her football knowledge wouldn't fit on the back of a postage stamp.  I basically ignore her but I also ignore many in the media (of either gender - Robbo etc)

Aah yes. I had forgotten about her shoddy treatment of disabled athletes, thanks for the reminder Macca.

My memory of Wilson will always be her leaving the MCG at 1/4 time on a saturday arvo.

The football itself was a minor issue of her agenda, bit like the top floor of AFL House...

I prefer to listen to or watch the footy-heads - ex players often have a lot to offer forward.  As for the gossip - no thanks.  But each to their own.

The worst part about tanking and where it's gone to is how the fans can embrace it as well.  Lose now to win later is a modern day doctrine.

I'd prefer to find a way to get rid of it (tanking) and I still hold those same sort of ideals towards drugs in sport.  Win fair & square should be the motto but we now live in a different world.

Too much $$$ involved now Macca, once the Broadcast deals went over a $Billion per contract i knew we were heading down the wrong road.

Let me get this straight....

Why do we continue to dwell on this?

We now are moving beyond that dark time and people want to dredge this up? We truly are a misery guts bunch.

Clarko clearly said that the aim was still to win after they started 0-4. That was clearly the case as they finished the year off well and were hovering just outside the eight.

There was no 'prize' awaiting them should they achieve a set amount of wins. They were going to get some miles into the legs of some of their blokes and if they got to September then so be it. THAT'S the difference.

I would suggest some look at the bloke who got the roughest end of the pineapple, Dean Bailey, when it comes to talking about this. Bails was bitter when it came to how he had been dealt with in the whole tanking imbroglio. He had every right to be as well. However, he didn't want bitterness to define him as a person. While there were a few people he still might have had some axes to grind with, he let it go.

One thing I can't get over with with this club is that we still have pizzing matches over inconsequential stuff that has long passed (be it the merger, Joe Gutnick, Cameron Schwab etc.) With this issue, some are starting to sound like those Essendon supporters they hypocritically bag for their willingness to grasp at any straw to vindicate them.

It was a dark chapter in  our history. There was some double dealing at City Hall but we were far from angels. To pretend that was the case is delusional and ignores the fact that said dodgy strategy set us back 5 years plus.

Alastair Clarkson: Hawthorn 'left finals go' in 2017

Rather than bust a gut in an attempt to scrape into eighth position, the Year was devoted to playing youngsters and experimenting with positional changes.

The late Dean Bailey copped a suspension for being suspected of doing much the same thing. Chris Connolly got one for joking about it. The MFC was heavily fined and had to spend time and money defending itself.

Carlton did it and wasn’t even investigated.

Surely though, Clarkson has brought the game into disrepute. The AFL needs to look into this scandalous behaviour.

I get what you're saying, but the Hawks didn't have a 1st round pick let alone trying to get a priority pick so there was no reward for losing.

On the back of numerous injuries Hawthorn managed their list for development purposes.  There was no carrot or nefarious prize motivating them.

Melbourne tried to manipulate results to improve their draft position.

If you think the two are the same you're breathtakingly stupid.

I was amused by this.  I read it as meaning that it's not clear what gender Mark Robinson is. Usually the debate is about what his profession or skill set is. This is something new and refreshing.

Such is the nature of the over-the-top political correctness these days 'LDvC' that I made that comment re Robbo (and others) to stave off those who may believe my views on 'Caro' were one sided.

Did anyone look at Hawthorns results?

They won 6 1/2 games out of the last 10. Losing by 3pt to Geelong, 29pts to Richmond and 7pts to Carlton.

They beat Adelaide, Collingwood (we couldn't), Sydney, Freo (by 52pts), North (we couldn't). and the Bulldogs and drew with GWS.

Hawthorn might have played the kids, but they did not tank.

Is just a matter of degrees.  While in the constant pursuit of justice, frustration and the expression of such, often abounds.

The role of the Integrity Unit, as you should well know Daisy, is to find anyone with a shred of integrity who works for the AFL, and get rid of them. As you can imagine, on that basis , they have little to do.

Treading on thin ice. In this modern age, assuming or pre-judging anything to do with anyone who may be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, [censored], intersexual, pansexual, or of indeterminate sex ... may infringe on someone's human rights.

Assume nothing. Do not pre-judge. Do not be biased, bigoted, chauvinistic, or anything else that may cause Robbo to feel he is less than worthy as a member of our society. Play it safe and treat Robbo as the one thing everyone of every ethic or creed can come together and agree on: he's a drunken fool.

We might have crossed wires there LDvC and I may have inadvertently cracked a funny re Robbo ... but the mind boggles if he has crossed over to the other side.  I don't even want to imagine it but who knows?

We all know about Tanking

The fact that Caroline Wilson went so hard at the MFC and not others was our main problem.

Her attack was relentless and personal, meanwhile all the other clubs could walk away...

She has a vendetta against us

Perhaps what could fix draft pick tanking is actually the last 4 teams playing off against each other in the later rounds but with handicaps, with 18th obviously having no handicap. Be it points, rotations or whatever.

That could become unfair for the other teams who are yet to play any of the bottom four teams.

If they were to play towards the end of the normal home and away season how would you be able to fixture this given the bottom four aren’t set at the start of or during the season.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
