In one final trade, The Age has recruited Jake Niall from Fox with  Caroline Wilson relinquishing her role as Chief Football Writer.

I know she's not been everyone's cup of tea, but 19 years in the role is a pretty solid career. With more positives than negatives in my view. And definitely more lucid than the Herald Sun's equivalent. Interestingly, Patrick Smith has also retired (this week, I think) as a full time journo at The Australian.

Caro is a very clever journo - she mixes a pinch of fact and truth with a heavy doses of opinion and speculation without really giving the reader an indication of what is fact and what is fiction. She makes for interesting reading none the less

Good riddance. 

Kicked Melbourne when we were down more than anyone but turned a blind eye to Richmond when they were. Showing a hopeless bias and conflict.

Forever complaining about "boys clubs" in men's football yet showed little interest in promoting AFLW.

Emma Quale and Daisy Pearce are  great ambassadors and role models for women in football. Caroline Wilson is not.

Good riddance and can't wait to see the back of you.

Always have had mixed feelings about Caro.

I often read her articles because unlike many of the journos they are well written and provide entertaining reading. 

She is smart, wily and can write well and is able to analyse an issue. More often than not, her conclusions are highly subjective and reflect the angle she has decided to take. She manipulates the facts to suit her story line.

Her articles are usually  a mixture of footy politics,  personalities,  club infighting, disharmony, rumours and scuttlebutt.  She rarely writes a positive story unless its about something or somebody she likes.   

She is opinionated and melodramatic but knows how to write a good article. Hence all the media awards. 

I give her credit for her attack on some holy cows and for not backing down to personal attack.

Her scathing criticism of the EFC and James Hird is the best example over recent years.  Compare that to the journos of other media outlets that helped run the EFC PR campaign and Hird defence. 

Yet she is full of prejudices and biases that influence her articles,  reduce her objectivity and make one query the truth of what she writes about.  As Nutbean pointed out, her articles are a mixture of fact and fiction  but with a strong angle or story line that can produce a conclusion that is debatable, overblown and sometimes unfair.

Anyway, it sounds like she is going to continue to write weekly articles so she will continue to provoke comment and argument. I have no doubt that she will dredge up dirt on Goodwin or the MFC if we have a poor 2018.

A rare 'actual journalist' in football, and I respect her for that.

BUT

There's always going to be an element of distaste for the way she would build up some really serious vendettas, making things her personal crusade.

Gotta take the good with the bad, at least she's not one of the mass of dribbling idiots who contribute absolutely nothing to the 'football discourse'. Even disagreeing with Wilson, at least there's something there to bother disagreeing with.

Took all the credits for the EFC debacle, yet it was Quale and Niall who actually broke the news, and then continued with the follow up to eventually bring the house down.

Not a single comment from Wilson until the whole saga was over, and then reverted to commentary about the individuals concerned. 

Never a bad word about Richmond, yet always took the chance to pot those who got rid of her old man.

Not a Journalist, and won't be missed.

Have never really got why such outright hatred for Caro, and have been appalled at the treatment she's copped from various quarters over the years, but at the same time, I don't actually respect her that much.

She is not so much a sports journalist as a gossip columnist specialising in AFL gossip.

Emma Quayle kills her as a football journo.

 

Quayle's ideal story: 17 y.o. centre half forward who grew up with single parent on dairy farm has great hands and great boot, can also play back and could be just what Blues need.

Caro's ideal story: Wife of Bulldogs board member whose son auditioned for "The Bachelor" co-owns business selling poker machines to business once owned by Dr Geoffrey Edelsten which owes $3M in tax to gov't.

Agree with everything you have written here Hemingway.  

I probably could handle a bit of her rumor, dirt and innuendo style of reporting occasionally if was just a small part of her repertoire, not basically her only act.   She never gave the impression that she actually liked/enjoyed the game of footy.  A poor choice as a Chief Football writer, when all she mostly did was put off and give her taget audience the shits.

Though I did think Sam Newman's take off untasteful and a bridge too far, I certainly won't miss Carro's reporting.

Can't forgive her for "The Vault" article, the first ultra beat up from her on the tanking episode! It was debunked over subsequent weeks and it became obvious that it was just a regular coaches meeting not some clandestine meeting of the inner sanctum of evil as she tried to portray it. Later on she was still at it, accusing Pettard of deliberately fumbling a ball on the wing in the dying minutes of controversial loss to Richmond where we were ahead when the final siren sounded! Absolute shyte, in a year when MFC players fumbled balls all season.

She's had her moments but I'm not sure she's as biased as some are making out here. Mostly gave it to those who deserved it, without fear or favour.

That said, she was very heavily a politics in football writer and that was her strong suit. Personally I'm not sure the political side of the game deserved as much coverage as it got and therefore you had regular articles that were based on rumour or opinion pieces.

There were times that the game went through great scandals and drama that required heavy coverage but a lot of the time I felt like Caro could've held out for the bigger stories. 

Clearly she had fantastic sources in the Essendon saga, maybe a bit too fantastic.

Jake Niall will make a good head football writer because he has the understanding and interest in all facets of footy - politics, business, trades, drafts, scandals and most importantly in the actual games themselves with a nice mix of new age and old school break downs of games.

Having said that, if Mick Warner wrote for The Age, he could possibly take on that role. But his employer, the Herald Sun, isn't as interested in publishing that angle in the first place.

Warner has broken a number of good stories.

I think it's important that the game has investigative journos digging in to the workings of the clubs and the League. Especially now that the Herald Sun has such a symbiotic relationship with the AFL it must not be easy for them to remain unbiased, same with the AFL media guys.
