For a while after his retirement, Joel MacDonald was flying high with a delivery company called GetSwift. The company was listed on the ASX and considered to be a market darling with Joel's net worth for a short time around $200 million.

Yesterday it all came tumbling down with GetSwift found guilty of various ASIC breaches. Penalties are yet to be imposed, but it appears Joel may be banned from managing corporations. Sad to see.

I'm still a annoyed we recruited him. We could have selected Dylan Grimes who Richmond grabbed with the next pick.

Dean Bailey seemed frustrated that we missed out on Luke Ball so McDonald was presented as a "gun" recruit instead of the plodder that he really was.

What a sliding doors moment that would have been for Dylan Grimes and the family. Jack was getting established with the club and the Grimes clan were committed Demon fans but that rookie draft selection of Dylan was significant because he’s become a triple premiership player with Richmond while Macdonald was at best serviceable over a much shorter space of time. Another bad choice of player in a sad and regrettable time in the club’s history.

I quite liked Joel McDonald as a player.

In retrospect though, not selecting Dylan Grimes was a mistake.

It wasn’t our only mistake during that period though. And it wasn’t our most seismic one either.

It’s funny to think that Luke Ball wouldn’t even talk to us back then, and now everyone wants to talk to us.

In fact, I wonder if Isaac Smith regrets rejecting a 3 year contract with us, to accept a 2 year deal with a club in an entirely different city.

Regrets heh?!

In retrospect, I'm glad that Ball didn't have any interest in us, as I thought he was kind of meh at Collingwood and to be honest, I never really noticed him at St Kilda either.  But then again I don't remember watching either side that closely at the time, so maybe he was actually a better player than I'm crediting him with.  My perception in retrospect is still that there was way too much hype over his move than it really warrented.  He wasn't anything like the Judd to Carlton kind of impact.

Does also make me think just how important the connection that players build with their team mates is to their output and contribution to team.  Probably a skill within itself for established players quickly adapt to their new role and how to best work together in a new environment and something that the gun recruits we have acquired in recent years, such as Lever, May, Langdon and Brown have clearly mastered.

Why does he have to be identified as a Melbourne player? He was at Brisbane for longer! 😕

Isaac moved to Geelong for lifestyle reasons. He rejected MFC offer for this reason. I’m sure he would reflect on this decision but I’m told he loves playing and living in Geelong. He is not a guy to live with regrets.

Smith would have been an unbelievable cherry on top.

He had an excellent year at Jeelong and there doesn't appear any signs he won't have another strong year in 2022.

Would happily play him over Sparrow (sorry)

Pull the other one. He went to the Cats because they went within a whisker of a flag in 2020 while we struggled. He figured he would have a better chance of winning a flag with them.

He even laughed when missing a set shot after the siren to take Hawks to a GF. Seems like a [censored] to me but each to their own (cue someone to be outraged for some weird reason)

I thought he was laughing before he took the shot, WoK, as if to say it was a fait accompli.

Smith and his recruitment to the Demons - had it occurred - would have been a retrograde step into ' ... wonder if he'll perform this week for four quarters ...' territory.

Finals Specialist  - GF goal assists to BBB and Fritsch at clutch moments. 14 possies, 5 inside 50's

Then his 3rd 1/4 goal one for the Ages. 50 m off 1 step and 4 Dogs running at him

Barely 21 years old.

Comparing Sparrow's finals record to Smith's is ambitious but I'm bullish on him too

Ambition is good. (paraphrasing Cometti). But what struck me was how well the youngsters performed in the heat . Sparrow had a lot of mates.

Not a millionaire any more ... and banned from being a director.

Former AFL player handed $1m fine, ban as GetSwift hit with penalties

Former AFL player Joel Macdonald has been ordered to pay $1 million and will be disqualified from managing corporations for 12 years, as the Federal Court handed logistics provider GetSwift the largest-ever penalty for breaching continuous disclosure laws.

Macdonald, a former Melbourne Demons player, was previously director of the last-mile logistics company, which became a market darling during Australia’s golden era for tech stocks ...

... Justice Michael Lee found Macdonald was focused on making money, with “little understanding or regard for his legal obligations as a director”.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
