When the VFA were televised live (for the youngsters this happened before the VFL ,,, now the AFL were televised) Port were probably "bigger" than some of the VFL clubs.

Hard to think it now

Would love to have some of Ports Hard men on Demons list

Young Ruckman Lachlan Waddell Impressed got beaten for knockouts but very athletic and at 21 has huge room for improvement is not a one dimensional Ruckman

I was a Sunshine boy. Saw a 1962 or so Port versus Sunshine blood bath at Selwyn Park, then home of Sunshine Footy and cricket club.

My under 16 Sunshine footy coach was an ex port player, Jack Storey.

I still barracked for them today. Turned the TV off in last quarter, the Tigers 2 goals in front. Felt elated when they won.

I don't like the Tigers. They have an ugly sense of cocky arrogance about them these days. I hope Adelaide well and truly creams them.

I watched the final. quarter of this. Brilliant game. 3 goals down at the 20 minute mark and they win. Lennon missing after the siren will hurt for awhile.

But I like this story, a club thats not involved with an AFL Club, nearly kicked out, going broke and cant get sponsors. But dug deep and now premiers. Garry ayres should be commended. Unlucky not to do more AFL coaching.

Plus they came up against a vfl team that is buzzing as a whole at the moment.

Plus it may set a precedence for the week for Richmond.

Brought up by a Demon mad father

He played VFA for Yarraville as did two of my Uncles

They had no time for Footscray not sure why

All my mates either played for or supported the Bulldogs

So they sang its a grand old flag after both VFL premierships ... wonderful.

Dumb question, but does that mean 2 teams in the comp share the same song? It never occurred to me before! ?

I played against Laurie Sandilands in a final. I kicked 2 goals. I could have been star!!!

I guess where your dad and uncles came from could have been an issue...

It was a great game.  I'm thrilled Richmond didn't win, and given that Port were on the verge of folding at the start of the year it's an amazing effort by them.

Can someone tell me again why Ayers isn't coaching an AFL side?

This is the big mystery 'Ralph' and his win/loss record at AFL level is a decent 53%...

I grew up as an Oakleigh supporter in the VFA. My dad played for them so I went along to most Oakleigh games. Absolutely hated Port Melbourne back then but very happy for them yesterday.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
