MFC players' careers after football

Jack Grimes is a person who always impressed me: he was highly articulate, professional and, in my view, displayed clear leadership skills and ability. Skills that I expect would be highly sought after in the corporate world or in the professions.

Similarly, Chris Dawes displayed similar attributes.

I now read with genuine sadness, though no surprise, that Jack Trengove has been delisted.

Anyone know what these guys are doing/will do post AFL football?

Here's something to make everyone envious. Joel McDonald started a logistics company called "GetSwift" which is now listed on the ASX. He's Managing Director and owns about 36 million shares in the company which are worth, on the current price of $2.13 a share, about $72 million.

I think James Strauss is also a significant founding shareholder, too.

It is Logistics software, few of the boys at the club during Joel's time came up with it as a project outside of footy, believe Strauss was involved

Found this article which is very apposite to this thread. It tells the story of a former EPL player who has set up a website to help players adjust to life after football.

Perhaps there is an opening for such a service in AFL.

"LAPS is an online tool available to former athletes who are searching for a career after the final whistle has blown on their careers. It contains a job board, networking opportunities, advice and case studies of former athletes who have moved into different lines of work. Simpson has spoken to hundreds of athletes since setting up LAPS. Many of them mental health issues and financial concerns and he wants to empower them. "

Didn't play too many games with us, but Craig Ellis started a swimwear company with his wife that's now worth a cool $60 Million according to this article

Some really interesting responses here - thank you.

Just read the Craig Ellis Triangl story on the Herald Sun. It's Hollywood territory: he and his wife had only 500 bucks to their name, were living off canned soup, borrowed $20k off two close mates, and now live in Monaco with over $60m to their name.

Fantastic. I liked him as a player too. Pity he did his knee in 2002 - we had some top wins that year.

Paul Wheatly (31) is an electrician.

Awesome to hear Joel Macdonald (28) doing very well. 36 million shares just doesnt sound right. I hope its true though. Good on him!

36m is 100% right (and some). Article and Top 20 below.

Yeah I often see Paul Wheatley on my train. I thought he was some sort of tradie.

The good thing about Trengove is I think he will be ok after footy. He is at uni and he seems like a kid who is smart and knows what to do after footy.

There are some AFL players and former ones you just look at and think what the hell are you going to do after footy, and they havent really set themselves up.

And of course Steve Smith's done well for himself, partner in large legal firm and MCC president.

Also.

I remember sitting in front of someone many years ago who was sounding off at Steve O'Dwyer claiming he was just another dumb footballer. I delighted in telling him Steve had a degree in (if I remember correctly) marine biology.  But I think he ended up running a sports store.

Also.

Anthony Ingerson is a builder.

You sure he's a real marine biologist?
