So this just popped up on the AFL feed

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-08-16/foundation-suns-forward-brandon-matera-set-to-seek-new-club

I'd love him at melbourne - high half forward rotating through the midfield - outside class. We don't have much of that.

He's different from Hannan, Garlett and Petracca.

Troll away ;)

He's got talent, not sure what his work ethic is like though. We could use his pace and goal kicking skills though.

If he didn't cost much then I'd be all for getting him.

No thanks.

You reckon I think he would be a steal at the right price only knock on him would be his work ethic definitely could kick 20-30 goals a season.

He can barely get a run with a poor GC side.  We have enough medium sized forward type players as it is, we don't need another, especially one who isn't a game changer.

I think I see where you are going - but jeez, thats harsh is my first thought...but if you're a stats loving man - there is a little bit of evidence to suggest similarities.

Doesn't excite me, but would be acceptable as a replacement player for a small forward not in our top 15 players - or as the kids call it - depth.

New lease on life at a different club could spark him (this worked for Jeffy). Has real X-factor about him, and having two dangerous smalls to support Hogan + Weideman bringing it to ground would create havoc. Kent/Kennedy out of favour, and Matera wouldn't come with a hefty price tag.

Yes for me.

He's older than I thought so to me he would be in competition with Garlett for the small forward role. Can play when tuned in but have the years and culture at GCS done him in...

I think he would be an upgrade on BenKen 'Wise', but...

I would probably pass.

hasnt played any good consistent footy despite being gifted 100 games.

at 25 yo I feel his bad behavours would be ingrained (lack of chasing/tackling/contested ball)

BenKen was worth a punt as he was 21/22 when brought in

Possibly, but he's been in the system a long time and hasn't set the world alight on a consistent basis.

Right now he wouldn't be in our best 25.  If he came for free to add to our depth then go for it, otherwise we have bigger fish to fry.

I like the guy's talent but we can't be a second chance city for cast offs who have bad work ethic anymore. The boards have been blowing up lately with our other guy in that category.

Posted

Talented but inconsistent. 15 goals in his first 5 games this season was looking promising but then he dropped away.

Not the worst project player to take on but at 25 how much improvement is there still to come?

I'm closer to a half hearted yes than a categorical no. Provided he came cheap.

If we could get him for next to nothing I think he's an upgrade on ben Kennedy and improves our depth.

He is a bigger talent than most here give him credit for and would do very well in a team of contested ball winners like ours. We need skilful finishers and he fits the mould, I would pursue him, then develop him further.

Posted

My jerking knee says no. But with further reflection he'd be a canny pick as long as he leaves his baggage in Queensland and doesn't cost us much.

Yes for me.

This is kinda what I thought. He's got talent, and as you say some X-Factor. What do we give up for him though? What will GC expect?

Would love Matera.  Just about everything our coaching and development staff touches turns to gold and we might be able to get him for a bargain, like the Garlett trade.

Imagine trying to remain motivated playing for the soul-less Suns all those years, and then to make things worse, Rocket Eade comes along.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
