Looks like the session is wrapping up. One of the last drills was a fun type where defenders would finish of the play by trying to snap goals from all over the place. Big roar from the team when Oscar snapped one from 40 out. Boys seem in great spirit.

Hogan, T Mac and Pedersen contesting one on one marking contests with Rawlings with each winning their fair share. Looks like we might go with 3 tall forwards and one of Tmac and Pedders to relieve Max.

Just reading the Carlton forum and they are worried about their lack of height in defence with the inuries they have. This could well be right....

Final inns

Hogan, Garlett, Smith, Kent

This is the most likely

Outs from last week

Viney, Bugg,Tyson, White, Wagner, Stretch

I like the look of that side!

Four ins and six outs. You have a great deal of confidence that the 20 can get the job done.

Got excited last night about a possible Trenners return but alas it increasingly sounds like that it is not to be.

They gave JKH some games early & he had no impact & played timid footy. He had a set shot 35m out & didn't make distance at a critical time in the game. He might be a good VFL player but doesn't cut it at the next level same goes with Wagner. At least Trenners has a footy brain.

One of the most pleasing sights was Gus involved in everything. The only one that  has stayed back to put in the extra yards with Cross.

A report on how Frost trains would be appreciated.  Had hammy issues during last week's game.  Yes, played the game out, but given how current state with soft tissue injuries, I'd be surprised if they risked Frosty.

Could be a simple Frost out, TMac to CHB, Weed comes in.

Frost completed the whole session and seemed unrestricted throughout but I did notice him rubbing the back of his leg a few times.

hun tipster team have us at about 3:1 as do the readers. some betting around $1.65

i'm surprised at the disparity. think it should be closer to evens, if not marginally to carlscum

seems little discussion in media of our decimated midfield (3 of best 5 missing)

Why? Joel Smith would be in the back line, so there's no conflict.

I always thought he was recruited as a high flying forward like his father but your right I guess they can play him down back. Your thinking outside the box.

Amazing news to have Hogan back!

Hope the boys lift for him.

Its a double bonus with him in and the motivation of his mates. Aside from winning all Dees would love to see this guy kick a bag of 8 or so. Seems to never have had a clear run to get into his stride and show us what he can really do. He deserves to have a day out after the year he has had.

If the accidental graphic that has since been removed is correct - I'm not happy with Kent as an in ahead of JKH.

With both Viney and Tyson out we need more from our rotating midfielders and I think JKH offers a lot more to the mix than Kent. I know some on here don't appreciate Tyson's work but Tyson is important in our midfield mix as both a possession player (even though some of his quick kicks out of packs are inefficient, so are many other players in the same situation) and also as a decent pressure player (a consistent mid-count tackler and good at applying smother pressure in packs).

JKH may have had his chances as far as some on DL are concerned but to date he's been played out of position as a forward whereas his best work in the VFL has been as a midfielder. For well over a month he has been extremely good at getting the ball at the coalface and providing pressure to opposition mids, so to not be open minded enough to consider him now would be crazy (IMO). (Imagine how many players would never have made it if we based decision solely on their first few games out of position as a young player and never gave them a chance after improving in the reserves - which is what it is there for?)

The coaches seem to have been happy with Trenners off the HBF of late (rotating through midfield occasionally), so he could do this and be another midfield rotation option and add some leadership to the squad with Viney out.

I would have liked Joel Smith to have another week or 2 in the VFL just to prove his form before we brought him back in. But I think he can come in for Wagner.

As for Kent I think he has been inconsistent at VFL level so I don't think he is ready to come back in to AFL level and have a consistent impact both on the scoreboard and particularly with regards to his forward pressure

My preferred changes would be:

In: Hogan (of course), Garlett (automatic), JKH, Smith, Trengove

Out: Viney, Tyson, Bugg, White, Wagner

This would mean:

I/C: Stretch, Trengove, JKH, Smith

(Emerg: Weideman, Kent and Wagner).

Not quite - the Age just tipsters just favor Melbourne 13 - 11.

Incidentally Caro is killing it - I'm copying her tips from here on in!

I just have a feeling that Wagner will click like OMac in the near future and become a very good player. Sad if Trenners isn't playing.

Was hoping to see Trengove play, and I would have JKH ahead of Kent as well.

Oh well, Kent gets yet another chance to do something useful. If he gets dropped again, surely that's it.

Our midfield looks light on, but maybe Petracca & Vince will spend more time in.

Split into respective positions now.

Max and Pedders contesting ruck battles with the midfield trying to win the ball in a clearance type of drill. Hannan, Vince, Oliver, Trac, Stretch, Lewis, Melksham, JKH and Harmes make up that drill.

Hunt and Hibberd working on their own as this looks a link up type of drill.

Tmac, Kent, Hogan, Garlett and ANB are the forwards.

Frost, Wagner, Smith, Jetta and Oscar the defence.

Doesn't seem that trangove will be selected. JKH, stretch, Wagner and smith look the most likely

Goodwin confirmed Trenners wont play at his presser just now

:-(

That's it for his career at MFC. Unlikely to be picked up by anyone else.

Dustin Martin is commanding $1.5m a year and trangove can't even be rookied. Sad

As with others, both Weids and Trenners on light duties at training because of their game tomorrow.

The rest, including the 23rd carry over, all trained well - basically a technique session for most of them - plenty of snaps by our forwards and preparation on crumbing and giving for the little guys.

From my reading of changes:

Hoges replaces Bugg as a leading forward - this time we go bigger up front as T-Mac and Pedo also part of six-man forward rotation with Kent, ANB, Jeffy and Trac/Hannan when resting.

Smith replaces White in back seven rotation (six plus on on bench). Hunt replaces Vince (used on ball).

Lewis and Vince and Trac to get more minutes in core midfield with Oliver and Gawn.  JKH on the outside with Stretch and Hannan.

Unclear yet whether 23rd is Wagner or Stretch/JKH or Jeffy. Given Jeffy seemed to get through, my guess is we will remove Wags but it could be Billy?

Given we have lost our two midfield lifebloods and our two best kicks, it's amazing how sharp and vibrant the place was this morning. Maybe we weren't mentally beaten up by the Swans after all.

The good thing is that this is almost our most balanced side since Round 1 and almost our quickest since that game.

Viney and Tyson out and you replace them with Kent and Joel Smith ... fascinating selections ??

You would expect Kent goes to half forward which releases someone like ANB to play more midfield minutes.   The same with Joel Smith, as that may release a Jordan Lewis or Bernie Vince to spend more of their time in the midfield as well.  The selections do make sense.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
