AFL match preview predicts Carlton by 20 points.....

i agree tho - they should win by 20+ points

we are severely struck by injury - our entire game plan is built around winning the contested ball and three of our four best at that are missing, and the other is 19 years old

carlton's strength is thru the middle, with kreuzer regularly beating gawn in recent match ups

garlett is our leading goalkicker and salem our best distributor

we're in all sorts

mfcss well and truly believing the nsc will get us every time!

Fingers crossed that is the team!

Could be Tyson also out, in which case I think Trengove or Maynard should come in.

I am having horrible thoughts that Viney, Tyson, Frost and of course Bugg are all out and none of the injured players get up to replace them.

Looking at something like

Out: Viney, Tyson, Bugg, Frost

In: Weideman, Trengove, JKH, Kent

yikes.

If we keep the attacking and daring mindset - we have enough cattle to beat Carlton.

Their midfield will win footy but we don't rely on that and if we are ferocious with our pressure we will win more than enough footy to kick a winning score.

Interesting little video.

I don't know how anyone could possibly think the Blues young guys are better than ours?

I think they have got some good potential, but they are seriously carried by their star studded older mids in Murphy, Gibbs & Kreuzer.

The win this week is all about the half backs. Our half backs - including Hunt, Hibberd, Frost, TMac, Jetta and Vince/Lewis need to use the ball smartly and don't just turn it over to Docherty and Simpson (who are really good players) and provide their rebounding. If we can get the ball deeper and quicker to Hoges, Peds, Garlett or whoever might be there, then their main defensive structure is taken out of play and we'll have the chance to score or at least lock the ball in. If we just bomb the ball to 40-80 meters out from our goal then I think we'll not only get beaten in the middle but also play into their hands.

Last time we played them they really flooded the backline and made it hard to score (but never really looked like scoring themselves). Now there playing better and with more freedom we need to take out what has been their strengths.

I'd bring Kent in for Bugg, and tell him he needs to either be in the middle to take the ball from the half backs ass they come out (so not caught in the 40m-80m area) or when the ball is in the fwd 50, if he is unable to directly impact the play go and stand right next to Simpson or Doc and stop their easy get out.

Not at all and it would certainly be a side capable of beating the third worst side in the league.

That's a very good defense on paper.

Jones ""...said Hogan was a strong chance to line up against Carlton this week after recovering from surgery to remove a testicular tumour while Jeff Garlett and forgotten man Jack Trengove would also come under serious consideration. A cloud still remains over Jack Watts' availability".

WOW!  To have Hogan, Garlett and Trengove in the team this week would be huge.  How good would that be to see them on the G again.  Warms the heart!

Big advantages for the team to see them in.  Even if Hogan has a 'quiet' game he would take a key defender.  Garlett will keep the likes of Dogherty on his toes.  Trengove would give some protection for Oliver as he will be exposed to opposition roughing up with most of mid-field out.

Assuming our skipper is not kidding us (would be cruel to do so):

Ins:  Hogan, Garlett, Trengove

Out: Viney, White, Bugg,

Edit:  Smiling Jesse and Jeffy in these training pics.  Must be a sign.

If Goodwin is the coach I think he is he will not allow Carlton to play loose in defence and drag Simpson and Docherty as close to goal and make them actually defend. Not let those two mentioned taking the 2nd kick off half back otherwise they will murder us with their run and delivery.

If?  Who else would be the coach?  Is 'Swooper' Northey making a comeback just for this round?

It's impossible for us to pick the ins and outs this week because of so many injured players - Garlett, Hogan, Watts and Tyson all unknown.

But my philosophy would be to risk nobody in this game but play best available.  The following week against Adelaide I'd rest Oliver, Hunt, ANB, Harmes, Gawn Hibberd and anyone else who is sore.  With our outs Adelaide in Darwin is almost unwinnable and taking tired players up there significantly reduces our chances of winning the following week and risks injury to tired bodies.

We need to focus on the back end of the season starting with the PA game with an improving list and players who aren't spent.

The commercial risk is of course the NT Government is a significant sponsor.  This approach would not please them.

Not sure how you can blame Mission and the fitness department. Not his fault the AFL crucified us with 4 weeks of short breaks plus the biggest road trip in footy.

Short of literally pulling players out of matches, what could he have done?

We had a light training load for this period of time, but our game style combined with these short breaks, is something he can't control.

Plus Viney's injury seems to be a recurrence, rather than something new, and Tyson is an impact injury.

It was 4 weeks of tough games too. A big Monday blockbuster, last years premiers and runners up and the icing on top a nice trip across the country. Well done AFL.

Prior to our injuries we have proved this year that we can beat the best of them and even some with a few outs.

I so hope we make the 8 and have a full compliment so as too smash them in Sep/OCT.

Maynard is on the rookie list. They would have to elevate him.

This is the dumbest thing I have heard.  Rest 6 players because you think they can't win.  The club would go into every game thinking they can win and you don't throw games

Big call but I see where you are coming from.

Assuming (big assumption) that we beat Carlton I agree. If not we need to snag a win against one of GWS, Port or Adelaide and therefore the Darwin game becomes more important.

#let's dump Darwin

why is it dumb... EPL teams do it all the time

It is part of list management. If it makes sense from a physiological viewpoint let's do it

We will need some height in the forwardline as Carlton have been flooding big time, making it hard for the smalls.....  let's hope Jesse gets up,  otherwise TMac will have to play forward. Weed may get a gig too if Jesse is not ready

If Weed had a good game against Port then there might be a chance but he had about 4 kicks in the VFL with two marks.

Sure delivery was not stellar but he needs time.

Agree he is not ready DJ,  but if we go in with a short forward line and bomb it long which we will be prone to do with an undermanned midfield , we will be stuffed !

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
