Leigh Matthews played in a different era when on-field thuggery was accepted. It shouldn't have been, but it was. That doesn't make Matthews' comments today somewhat tarnished. On the contrary, unlike many other older footballers working in the media, he's kept himself relevant by moving with the times. I expect he would know as well as anyone that what he did in his playing days would be unacceptable now and should have been then.

except what matthews did in his playing days definitely wasn't even acceptable then

LDVC.  I can relate to what you infer however LM has always been a narky niggly shlt.

I was there the day he and dumbo dlpshlt dementedco cleaned up Tulip. I literally saw the menace in his eyes. These sorts of players premeditate actions...bit like that West Coast player

Id be looking elsewhere for advocates..just saying ;)

Cheers

probably should not have happened in the sense that for its day it was not that far outside the pale.

The media did not know how to deal with it as suddenly because it was a criminal case there could be no comment.Similarly when it came before the courts it was a bit of a fizzer in the sense that if I recall correctly he got a good behaviour bond.

The article you have linked to is fascinating as it suggests some reasons why the charges were laid.

The most "entertaining one I can remember" is when a reserves player jumped the fence at South Melbourne Oval and hit a spectator. In those days the reserves match of the day was televised and the seniors was available only on replay. Banned for a number of years if I recall was the punishment but no police charges,

Interesting perspective from the public figurehead of the Coward Punch Campaign

Danny Green - SEN

"Former boxing world champion Danny Green says there is "not much" in Melbourne defender Tom Bugg's punch that knocked out Sydney youngster Callum Mills on Friday night."

Not sure how he stacks up next to Malcolm Turnbull or Waleed Aly as a character witness

Dermie throws in his two penneth worth further down the linked page

My memory of the Matthews Smith and Giles incidents is that the thug punched them both in the back of the head. Bugg & Mills were facing each other... big difference for mine. Perhaps the AFL will apply the Barry Hall rule and clear Bugg to play against Blues!

Bugg proves the case that most footballers are not rocket scientists.

I would prefer he does not play again in 2017. He just gives us another problem we don't need.

The only VFL/AFL player that I know of, that faced criminal charges for his hit on Neville Bruns.  His behind the play attack on Peter Giles went beyond thuggery, it was, in my view, also criminal.  Matthews has a docket as long as your arm.

Leigh Matthews attempted to slaughter Peter Giles every time he looked at him. It was sickening that that malevolent little dwarf got away with so much on the football field. Every time I see his horrible mug, I'm reminded of the viscous toad he was.

It wasn't acceptable, but it was accepted by those controlling the game. That's why players such as Jimmy O'Dea, Carl Ditterich, Mal Brown, Robbie Muir, Cowboy Neale, David Rhys-Jones, Ron Andrews and going back even further Mopsy Fraser and Jack Dyer were able to go around king-hitting players in-play and behind-the-play all the time. I'm definitely not condoning how Leigh Matthews (or any of them) played, but the way he played was not inconsistent with the standards of the day.

The Neville Bruns incident and the following court action was the community's way of telling the game's administrators it was time to clean up the game. Without doing any analysis, I suspect that the Matthews-Bruns incident was the turning point and on-field thuggery reduced thereafter.

In summary, all I'm trying to say is that Leigh Matthews was a product of his time. And if he played today he would play the way the modern game requires.

And to further hi jack Buggy's thread.

I was in a lift at the MCG a few weeks ago with Matthews, asked him how he got on with Steve Smith these days, Matthews looked sheepish and said he doesn't see much of him: of course, said I, he's president of the MCC now, done well for himself.

I then left the lift.

Back to Bugg. We knew what we were getting when we signed him up. Anyone who saw our last match against GWS at docklands in 2015 would know his temperament. He's always been a bit of a hot head.

A sensible voice among the pack of hyenas:  Boxer Danny Green, the face of the 'One Punch' Campaign says:  “there’s not much in that incident whatsoever”. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-media-watch-danny-green-says-not-much-in-tom-buggs-punch-to-callum-mills/news-story/2e646e3e2e3aeb072727f91b25f9c2b1

Green goes on to say:

“It was very bad luck on Tom’s behalf that he actually landed the shot. He got bumped and all he sort of did was lash out with an arm. It wasn’t like he was trying to hit him or trying to hurt him. He was just lashing out,” Green told SEN’s The Run Home.

“He was going for a punch to the guts or to the chest, a bit of a push-punch. There was nothing in it. (Mills) has sort of lowered his head unfortunately and it clipped him on the chin.

“Obviously he doesn’t have a strong chin, he’s got knocked out and got concussed pretty badly. It looks far worse than what the intent of what Tom Bugg was doing.

Bugg was turning around at the time he lifted his arm that hit Mills on the chin.  That gave him extra momentum.  It doesn't exonerate him.  It was stupid.  But commentators calling for 6-8 weeks are just ridiculous.  Green's comments put a bit of a reality check on the whole saga.

Christie Malthouse was trying to say it was as bad as Barry Hall's.

That is laughable.

Perhaps we could hope for a formula 1 type penalty:

The FIA will take no further action against Sebastian Vettel after investigating the incident in which he drove into Lewis Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver appeared at a meeting on Monday and offered a full apology for his actions, which was accepted by the FIA, alongside a commitment from the Ferrari driver to undertake educational activities across a variety of racing championships over the next 12 months.

slightly off topic, but the mrp which bumped bugg to the tribunal gave cam mccarthy 3 (down to 2) for a dangerous tackle. I've watched the video and that seems a very tough sentence. I would have thought a fine would suffice. what did others think?

Make no mistake, Bugg has a huge target on him.

If the " sentence"  is too harsh I'd be disappointed if the club doesn't appeal.( Not surprised however )

They (MFC) will wait first and gather ammunition which is hitting the headlines everywhere anyway....

Funny experience shapes how we view players differently.  I'm too young to have seen him play so I only know him as a jovial and kinda cuddly looking coach... with an ironic nickname.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
