The area of the ground I am most concerned with us, is the key backs. I know Frost is to return but I think we lack real talent in that area.

Tom Mc is our best there but he has poor disposal issues, Oscar is not there yet and Frost can break lines but can be erratic.

Clearly if our mids get on top in games,  that will help the backs, but to me we look suspect there.

A Weitering type would be my priority next draft/trade period.  

I know he's slipping out of favour but I hope Jetta comes in. he plays tall and he's just solid and super consistent.

He and Hibberd playing in round 1 will make me feel a lot more comfortable about our back six.

I'm worried Goodwin doesn't have Jetta as a lock for that small defender role like Roos did.

Other than Grundy I'm not sure what other tall defenders the Swans had in JLT3.  Bruce was the only forward who looked threatening.

For some reason Membrey always looks threatening against us.

Because we have no forwardline pressure when we play them and we turn it over too much. They are all threatening when its coming at 100 miles an hour under no pressure.

I think Riewoldt needs to be shut down from the start of the game, if he gets his hands on the ball early we struggle to stop him for the rest of the game. Does Bugg give us too much height to stick with him? He has the endurance to run on him all day. I think any of our talls would struggle and are needed elsewhere on the ground.

Positive about the season but not this game.

The Saints and that poor excuse of a ground just has a bad feel about it.

I am not sure about the Saints, but our line-up is unsettled. The practice matches have not helped us that much in determining our line-up in either our forward or defensive zones. And we may well select a few guys who are underdone for match time. The thought of playing underdone blokes like Jetta, Hibberd, Garlett, or Kent does not inspire confidence but there again the alternative selections have also not given cause for confidence

Its going to take time to sort out our best 22.

Not only that, but Membrey gets can absolute truck load of goals by just hanging out the back.  He can take a mark, but when he kicks a bag it's thanks to the pressure up the ground that allows him to get uncontested marks out the back of the zone.

Yeah but he is only able to do that if we dont put enough pressure on. If we force enough turnovers then it forces their forwards to come up and contend on the wing rather than wait out the back. We both more or less play the same way it's just that their forward pressure has been better than ours in previous games.

The reality is I'm happy for their forwards to hang out the back and kick 5 or 6 goals from the goal square if we force enough turnovers that they only kick a total of 10/12 goals all up. I would back ourselves to score more than that. I've said a number of times that i hate ANB playing as a forward but given he is keen to put pressure on he might actually be worth a run in round 1. Assuming of course that one of Garlett/Kent is unavailable.

Cannot understand the "negative waves" re the game against the Saints.

While we have not beaten them for a while they have not thrashed us and we had better be a 4-5 goal better team this year.

If we lose it will be because our game plan does not work and we leak easy goals.

Very concerned that Jetta may not be playing.... not because of the player himself but rather it could (and I emphasise the word "could") be another example of a senior player going by the wayside just at a time when they should be really producing.

Let's face it the Demons have got little value out of the bulk of their senior players for far too many years now... Garland, Trengrove, Grimes, Dunn, Dawes, ... the list goes on

That was pretty much my point.  He is beatable one on one, but he kicks bags on us as we let him kick easy ones out the back.  Stop that, stop Membrey.

I totally agree that the level pressure that our mids and forwards bring, will go a long way towards deciding this game.  The absence of Vanders and an underdone Kent (in the unlikely event that plays) weaken us in this area.  For this reason I'd seriously consider playing Jones across half forward for good portions of the game.  To me he has the attributes of game-sense, hardness and goal kicking to make a good fist of it, and I certainly think he could add more value in that role than rotating through a HBF.

Neither can I, they are around the same mark as us and if we are still frightened to play at Etihad then we should just give it away.

We have improvement in us and players like Jones, Vince and Lewis will be much better when there are four points on the line. Dyson will improve on the JLT3 game and with another run will be ready to go. Milkshake was good early in JLT3 but faded a bit, he will be better next time up. 

We were ordinary in JLT3 but nearly stole it in the last and could have if Hogan had kicked straight.  We coasted against Carlton and had the doggies covered all day in the previous JLT games. It seems as if a majority are happy to concede this game and hope for the return bout win, that's not an option, we have to stop this run of losses against them and now is the time to do it.

Our backs will have to perform better, that's a given but if we can win the centre clearances and get the ball to our forwards quicker that will put pressure on their backs, we also have to keep it in there and not allow a quick rebound.

I'm not prepared to concede this match and I think we will win by a small margin.

I know people keep saying this and it's a valid point.

But the exact same can be said for the Saints.

Carlisle and Brown without doubt strengthen their back-line which was a weakness last year and Steele provides further depth and talent to their midfield.

We've improved and so have they.

Calm down fellas, Think more like 1 goal better side. We averaged 13.10 (88) last year going up by 4 goals a game (assuming similar accuracy) would take us to an unheard average of around 17.14 (118). Hell do that and we would be near unbeatable. A 2 goal better side takes you into a premiership caliber offence, we arnt there yet.

Tommy Mac is an option 'Ethan', he can run with him all day. Did a good job a couple of seasons back until being injured then Nick got away from him.

It's just whether Goodwin thinks he can cover Bruce & Membrey with others.

This game will give us our first good insight into the Goodwin footy brain.

id happily lose once we win the next 5

just one game of 22. if anything, the results in round 1 tend to be unusual/upsets as it is a frantic pace and the top teams can be off top gear

I wonder how much of our Ethiad voo doo is in the mind.

That said perhaps being round one, the media and players may be focused on other things than our incredible losing streak at this ground.

If it continues this year it spells disaster given we play there four times this season.

Playing Saints round one at Ethiad is a perfect opportunity to jump them and break both their winning streak against us and our crazy voo doo. Will we go 2 ruck?
