Every time I become at peace with Jake Spencer I remember the time against the Roos in 09' he dropped the ball when running in to have a set shot...

In all seriousness though I am confident in Spencer, he has come along & will be more than capable to fill in for the time Gawns out. It's quiet scary that in some ways Spencer is more important that Gawn, we always knew we had a reasonable back up if Gawn went down, if Spencer goes does were screwed!

Imagine Max went down this time last year? Demonland meltdown. We've come a long way with our MFCSS in a short space of time.

Absolutely agree. And there's a reason for that - we have the talent and game plan to push on.

cant believe I'm saying this but I thought Slobbo summed it up well just now on 360. We may well look back on this setback and admire how our group galvanised and stuck to its guns.

Disappointed to lose the best ruckman in the game for half the season, obviously, but in a way I'm looking forward to the element of intrigue this adds.

Spencer's games record in a season is 8. Not many players get to stay on a list for 10 years for 36 games - most either get axed or go looking for more opportunities, so it's a very unusual case of the club and player sticking together. He's never had an extended go like he's about to get, and opinion is so divided on him. I suspect we're about to find out one way or the other if he's truly capable as an AFL ruckman or not.

Good luck Jake!

Nice to see him play 50 for all that effort !

Don't jinx him.

He needs to get there first. I'm more worried about the MRP than injury preventing him at this stage.

Other teams have won premierships without a top line dominating ruckman, even in recent times. Just get on with playing the best footy we can with the most in form players (whether it's up and comers, older guys, whoever...just play the best "in form' who is showing they are up to it at Casey for a few weeks on end for the role required at AFL level) and we still make the finals, subject to no further injury woes

Incredibly, our next in line available ruckman has only recently returned to football and has not even played a VFL game yet. (If I remember correctly, even the injured Mitch has yet to play a VFL game).

Spencer now he is fit would probably get a game with some other clubs with poorer ruck stocks despite his deficiencies. He should be serviceable while playing in the ruck but is a burden if he needs to rest up forward. Good that he gets some reward for his efforts of the years

Note the injuries the Bullies had last year.  They obviously overcame adversity, over the course of the year, to win the ultimate prize.  "Why not us"?

This is also how I always remember Jake unfortunately. Still it happened at Docklands, when we were trying to lose. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

He has a stronger set of hands these days. I think he'll surprise a few with his effectiveness up forward and around the ground and he did kick 3 goals in one of our JLT matches.

What I do like is his physical presence in the ruck and when the ball falls to the ground. He's a big boy and opens up space for the other onballers

Boy.. such confidence on this site that we can overcome injuries, suspensions etc.

Let's be honest... we now have no reserve forwards, no more reserve rucks and the backline is looking thin. And now Vince off for surgery!

Riewoldt goes down with what looks like a season if not career ending injury and is back after missing one match.... MFCSS is very much alive with me as I keep remembering Spencer's VFL finals series last year.

Lucky we are playing Freo this week .. hopefully it is their turn to be "young and tired".

PS: Now see that Vince might do a Lazarus and play this weekend.... fingers crossed

Why is he a burden, be specific

Gee you remember something from 8 years ago, I've moved on from last weeks game, it's easy if you try

Spencer if he gets a go is coming off a full pre season for only about the 2nd time in ten years and two years of ruck coaching from Greg Stafford, also been told his running and aerobic ability is the best it has ever been

His goal kicking action now is one of the simplest at the club, they stripped it back, reasonably successful now

Interesting stats. Will be hard to replace his dominance as the charts and numbers highlight

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-04-11/the-stats-files-are-the-demons-gawn-plus-make-your-september-plans

Spencil will do better than Watts did. He wont be as good as max but those stats were a little out of context. Better to compare the stats between rounds 1/2 and 4/5 after Spence as a couple of games.

All I ask is for posters to give Spence a go and not smash him with the usual "He's a spud" type comments

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
