So, is Mitch Hannan's new nickname going to be 'Chomper', 'Dracula' or 'Floss'?

Meanwhile, I'm a bit confused about exactly what Watts did today. One of those articles had him leaving early and going home sick, but also staying behind after the session to do some drills with a line-coach.

If Watt's pre-season has been about transdimensional motion and he's now managing to be in two places at once, then we might have a serious player on our hands.

Hannan will have the Monkhurst smile. Also remember Fletcher losing some front teeth in the West. It takes a lot of time and money to get a good result.

I remember  felcher losing his  teeth and i thought  that was most excellent at the time

I've noticed recently that a lot of players don't seem to wear mouthguards these days.

Crazy.

Mouth guards are about as useful as helmets.

If you cop a decent blow to the gob with a mouthguard you will probanly lose the lot of pearly whites. Can't breathe properly with them either.

And they cause you to dry retch when playing with a massive hangover.

I could never get used to one.

So basically what they're saying is that Watts was cruising through training and Goody took the opportunity to make a point about training standards and that nobody gets an automatic game.  Good on him for that.  He's making it clear from the outset that it's now his team and that he expects everyone to tow the line.  I don't see them keeping him out of the side long-term though, especially if he has, as reported, increased his output.  The Weed isn't ready yet, despite some very good signs, so we need Watts to play that role at least for this year.

We need each of Watts, Petracca and Hogan to continue to keep playing the roles that they currently play into the future and Weideman to complete our forward arsenal when he is cherry ripe (which is increasingly close)! Watts is a superstar in his own right and is not keeping a seat warm for anyone!

Helmets (or headgear) are good for bumps and knocks but doesn't do anything for concussion (nor do they claim to).

Mouthguards are far more useful than helmets, I'd be shocked if Hannan had his teeth broken if he was wearing one.

Absolutely. Can't believe there are 'alternative facts' for mouthguards being bad...

Mouthguards stop your teeth from getting damaged!

Wrecker45 - if there was a hit so strong a mouthguard pulled your teeth out, you would be in a car crash and not wearing your mouthguard!

This is adds to the argument that mouth guards should be mandatory when playing against Jack Viney.

I would suggest there's a big difference between a quality, fitted mouthguard and one of the cheap ones you buy at a pharmacy.

The cost of fitting an entire team with custom mouthguards is about the same as the cost of replacing a few teeth.

Plus, strangely enough, mouthguards have significant benefit for preventing concussions - the ripple shock of bone-on-bone as the mouth suddenly gets clamped shut can exacerbate the initial impact.

He could've had 10 mouthguards in, King's foot would've still knocked all his teeth out.

It was once of the moments where everyones hands went to their own mouths...

The photos suggest he fractured his teeth rather than knocked them out, hence the quick repair job. The message that teeth can often be re-implanted has certainly got out there, sometimes resulting in confusing and pointless searches like yesterday. He is not out of the woods yet either, so the best approach is to prevent these things from happening in the first place. The club needs to actively encourage all players to wear mouthguards whenever contact is likely.

well that was quick. i can't get into my dentist for 2 weeks

and that explains something else too. he just chipped his teeth. no wonder they couldn't find the chips

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
