The moment with Watts standing up with two hanging off him, gets the kick away to Tyson, who snaps and goals!.... favourite moment of the 2016 season. Utter brilliance and deelight.

SWYL your on fire mate, I'll never ever forget the win over the dorks, but that humiliation of North in the elimination final, coming in as under dogs was something out of the box. As pointed out anyone too young to remember will appreciate it. Come to think of it the next final against the Swannies was a thumping too. Will have to watch.

Watts' best quarter easily. All he touched turned to gold.

We looked so fit that day.

I was in the MCC Smokers Stand for those 2 games. It never rocked harder than on those 2 days

So many good players in that last quarter - if pedersen could do that last quarter consistently he would be a lock. alas..

Now THAT just made my day. Thanks so much for posting. Certainly ranks as one of our biggest and best wins in the decade of no finals. Some thoughts:

1. Radio commentary is always so much better. And Tim Lane is one whose calls are accurate, interesting and emotive.

2. Jack Watts' kicking - breathtaking.

3. Angus Brayshaw's tackling and gut running.

4. This was the first time in a long time that our numbers around the ball outnumbered a quality opposition for most of the day.

5. I have too quickly forgotten how good our young players like Stretch, Oliver and OMac are.

2017 round 1 - hurry up.

Agreed but we have to make sure we can hear all the witty banter between commentators. That is why people tune in after all

Yes. It's like that doorknob "Gill's Brother" Hamish who rabbits on about his childhood as if anyone cares.

Commentators have "become" famous now

I was ready to punch the screen if I heard that "hey big spencer" line one more time last week. Cometti could do it because he was clever and wouldnt break stride. Dwayne....nope

Pet peeve.

Radio callers: tell us who has the ball and where they are on the ground. Every so often, the scores and the time. Don't "Monkee" around, it's not entertaining, it's tiresome.

TV announcers: you're not on radio. We can see it too. We can see that Viney marked it and has turned around and is running and looks around and takes a bounce and now kicks it to Jones. Tell us something we can't see. Such as ... why did that bloke kick it there and not there. Why did that bloke run over there. What are team A doing tactically right now?

Seeing as the media are all over this web site, these simple messages should have some impact.

Thanks for sharing these two games guys. Fantastic to watch and not that different in many ways.

Features of both games 29 years apart:

Attack on the ball, inside and outside.

Attack on their opponents. Pressure, pressure, pressure.

Running in numbers and into space.

Sensible and effective use of handball and short kicking.

Other features of the North match:

Great umpiring.

Seeing Demetriou, Clarkson and Shaun Smith playing for North.

Seeing the late Robbie, Jimmy and Sean playing that day. What great players and men!

Seeing the dads of our current players, Todd, Steven Stretch, Shaun Smith-how time flies.

Seeing some of the Demon names that I had forgotten playing in that match. How did Northey get such incredible value out of these good ordinary players?

The game against North was still the most dominant 4 quarter performance that I have ever seen from Melbourne. A day to treasure and remember. I will always remember after returning from the game and seeing the jubilant look on my father's face when I walked into his hospital room in his final days, and sharing the highlights of the day. He had taken me to the footy every week from the age of 4 and they were the best days ever.

Great stuff WYL, so much better than the Fox Footy commentating which I have probably watched 5 times that last qtr!

Anyone who thinks Pedo is not best 22 needs to watch his involvements in that qtr, he had a big say in the result.

I'll never forget those 2 Tyson goals in the last qtr. He reeks of last qtr heroics and will be an absolutely brilliant player for us over the next 8 or so years.

He also kicked a ripping goal in the first Hawks game that gave us momentum into half time.

We're very lucky to have a very talented pick number 2 on our hands.

Great to watch again. Definitely better without the Fox Footy commentary, some of them really know how to ruin the moment (channel 7 are no better).

If anyone needed reminding of how good Watts was last year that last quarter is such a great example. He was everywhere and pretty much everything he did was spot on.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
