Post Match Thread vs. Doggies

Garlett was well above serviceable. Clearly our premium small forward.

Melksham had one perfect kick, other than that decision making was prettt poor and execution followed. But competed really well in 1on 1s.

Hunt rarely loses a contest and wil 99% of the time halve them. Will find more opponents putting time into him, but wil alll.

Spencer surprised, but future looks bleak, without injury.

We played well for a side missing some serious talent, which indicates how deep we bat

watts, hibberd, Jetta, Tyson, Kent and Pederson all are basially first team players

Positives:

Oliver in traffic, about the only one who wasn't doing 10m hack kicks

Brayshaws tackling

Jones' kicking

Intent of the players

Negatives:

Receiving two very soft goals from frees (Petracca and Hogan)

Weideman (perhaps a bit harsh but gave two really poor efforts in the last two minutes of the 3Q then dropped a sitter in the last quarter). Did take a nice strong mark in the 2nd quarter.

Wagner, VDB and Hogan all getting injured to varying degrees.

Hunts disposal

Players not taking shots at goal from 40m out

Two  things  that  havnt  been   mentioned,

We  played  the  game  at  the  premiers  home  ground, a  big  benefit  to them.

And  in  the  season  proper  there  are  no  9  pointers. As  they  kicked  2  that  would  be  6  points  less  they  scored  in  the  season  proper.

We  were  rusty  but  looked  the  most  dangerous  for  most  of  the  game.

We  need  to  finish  out  our  quarters.

Some great positives.  In training, attention perhaps shifts to:

clean out of contests

pressured disposal

running out quarters

point kickouts

when to go slow/ go fast.  Slowing opposition runs.

some great link play.  Excellent intent and pressure.  A good first hit out with rays of sunshine, and stuff to improve.

Each to their own, but I get amused by the constant criticism of Brayshaw, who is tough, smart and a beautifully balanced footballer with great foot skills on either side of his body.  Does he incorrectly weight the odd kick ?  Sure, he's an improving young player.  And it was the first hitout for the year.

Imo, he'll become one of the games elite midfielders.

Agreed PD I thought brayshaw was really solid yesterday, ran to the right places and got the ball.

Its just his first pre season practice game for the year he will need to work his way into it. But I still think he's in for a very strong year

Totally agree about Spencer and Gawn. We look a lot better and balanced side with Spencer there. It is interesting that with the commentators waking up about Demon potential they can now see what a menace Max will be as a resting forward. Bring it on I say - and Spencil is a very under-rated ruckman which a number of  sides will come to learn in this current season.

What surprised me watching Spence yesterday was his mobility. I live interstate so I haven't seen him for a while. But I have to say he looked like a different player to the loping, unco, try hard of yesteryear. He was good in the ruck and also really fully fierce when the ball was on the ground. I thought he added a dimension to us when he was on. Its hard to judge from a practice match but I liked him and Max in the same side. At the very least my MFCSS thoughts re Gawn going down with a knee injury on the eve of the finals don't feel as scary.

One thing for sure though if he doesn't get game time this year he'll be gone next year. That isn't a reason to play him I know but he IS  a valuable commodity.

Joel Smith was the big turn-up for me. Laid the best three tackles of the game, read the ball well and was constructive with his disposal. Dare I say his athleticism reminds me of Easton Wood. I think the brains trust have big plans for him. Sam Frost might be the one to make way.

Dogs didn't have more than 2-3 players missing from premiership side. The bont is a big out but so is watts for us. I think Liam picken is jnjured and wouldn't have played anyway

That's a bit harsh for a first practice match isn't it.  BTW didn't he slot through the first goal of the game from a decent way out?

Plus he gave off 2 to Bugg which at somewhere with less breeze like Docklands he should have gone back and slotted.

edit, he looked good and will cause some real headaches this year and beyond for opponents.

On here? A quick scan of the post-match thread and this as the best I could find.

Geat effort today and believe J Smith is a goer. I love how Spence is finally getting there. I am not convinced about Brayshaws speed and disposal.

I'll defend Hunt and Brayshaw's games today. Both were messy with the ball but fantastic without.

Brayshaw kept bobbing up in good spots, had uncustomary fumbles I'm sure he'll get rid of -

Clint and from memory you.

But it's not just this thread, it's a general pattern.

Best thing I saw was the team waiting in line for the women to come out......Bernie practicing his golf swing with a kids Demon flag......Max standing at the back making the the flag he had in his hand look small.......really laughed it looked great all of them like a bunch of kids hanging out with a bunch of kids.

Me? Constant criticism? I suggested that Brayshaw's fumbles weren't uncustomary at this time of year. I also think he's one of the best prospects in the league  - once he settles into the pace and finds that extra quarter-second for decision-making and execution. That's hardly some contribution to a chorus of constant criticism.

Looks like we have a round 1 bolter in J Smith. Salem, Clarry and Bray appear to have gone up a gear. Hogan looks like he may have gone up a few gears. We were good around the contest but we did get too many drawn in a bit too much. Also our ability to kick the ball out of the backline is still a concern. Vince down there gets it a lot but is a liability and he will cost us games if he plays there all year.

Agree on Vince. Haven't seen the game yet as away, but was saying that in the last half of last season. He gets it and can kick a long goal, but he also turns it over and in defence that can be lethal.

He is probably best now with bursts in the middle and spells in the forward half, where he can hurt  the opposition with a goal.

We have enough half backs now and don't need him playing there.

Spencer and Smith were two who staked a claim for round 1 early on in the preseason based on yesterday.

What I found fascinating to watch was the way Vince, Lewis and Jones were switching between defensive, inside and outside mids.

I wonder if that's a sign of things to come in 2017 and beyond.

Really like Vince and Lewis marshaling the troops in defense... good by foot and have smart footballers. Will really help our defensive setup this year

Is it worth noting that Goodwin's unofficial coaching record with us is now 4-0. Probably not, but it's a handy start.

A nice stat

Unfortunately no premiership points

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
